How Accurate are Home Pregnancy Tests?

by DP Nguyen 155 Comments

Whether you’re trying to conceive, or you’re afraid that you accidentally got pregnant, you will want to know the answer to – “How Accurate are Home Pregnancy Tests?” In order to understand the accuracy of home pregnancy tests, you have to first learn about how they work, what hormones they measure, and how soon you can take the test.

Home Pregnancy Tests and How They Work

Home pregnancy tests cannot tell you whether or not your partner’s sperm has been successful in penetrating your elusive egg, and they cannot tell you whether the fertilized egg has implanted in your womb. What a home pregnancy test can tell you is whether there are pregnancy hormones in your body.

A home pregnancy test measures the level of a hormone called, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG for short). Non-pregnant women do not have this hormone in their body. hCG is the unique pregnancy hormone that the cells from the blastocyst (the ball of cells that will eventually become the embryo) produce during implantation – this usually takes place a week after you conceive. HCG will first enter your bloodstream around six days after conception. By this time, the fertilized egg (now the blastocyst) has implanted and made a nice, comfy home for the next nine months.

Human chorionic gonadotropin can be detected in your bloodstream before you notice that you have a missed period. Afterwards, it can be detected in your blood. This pregnancy hormone helps keep your pregnancy healthy, and it aids in the development of your unborn baby. As your pregnancy continues, the levels of hCG will continue to increase, doubling every two to three days. After your baby is born, you will have no more hCG in your bloodstream or urine.

How Accurate are Home Pregnancy Tests?

For the most part, home pregnancy tests are pretty accurate. Most home pregnancy tests claim that that they can detect pregnancy by 99 percent accuracy (sometimes even higher than this). Some claim that you can use them on the day of your first missed period. But here’s the problem – if you take a home pregnancy test too early, you may get a negative result even when you are definitely pregnant. For some women, it takes them awhile before the amount of hCG in their urine is high enough for a home pregnancy test to pick it up.

The accuracy of home pregnancy tests depends on a number of factors, including how soon you take the test and how sensitive the test is.

Although some home pregnancy tests can detect the level of hCG in your urine as early as the first week of your missed period, a majority of home pregnancy tests on the market are not that sensitive. You may end up getting an inaccurate result if you take the test too soon. For this reason, you will want to test, test, and test again if you have missed a period and don’t know if you’re pregnant or not.

If you receive a negative result from the home pregnancy test at first, but you’re almost positive that you’re with child (some women just have a gut feeling that they’re pregnant), wait another week and take the test again.

(If you’re looking for my specific recommendations for accurate home pregnancy tests, please head over to my Pregnancy and Baby store, where I’ve handpicked what I believe are the most accurate and reliable HPTs.

When Should You Take a Home Pregnancy Test

Many home pregnancy tests do claim that you can test on the day that you miss your period and get an accurate result. Unfortunate, research on this issue doesn’t back up the claims from these companies. If you do happen to get a result on the day of your missed period, the line can be too faint for you to correctly understand.

For the most accurate result on a home pregnancy test, you should wait one week after your missed period. If you need to know earlier than this, you should make an appointment with your doctor and get a blood pregnancy test. Blood tests can measure exactly how much hCG is in your bloodstream, and it can tell you whether or not you’re pregnant. (Again, you may run into the problem of testing too soon, and there’s not enough hormones in your bloodstream yet, even though you are indeed pregnant.)

Types of Home Pregnancy Tests

Home pregnancy tests come in two basic types. The most common home pregnancy test that you’ll find at your local pharmacy or grocery store uses a test strip that you pee on (or you dip into a cup of urine). The second type of home pregnancy test uses a test device and a urine collection cup.

To get the most accurate result on any type of home pregnancy test, you will want to take the test first thing in the morning. When urine has been in your bladder all night (when you were sleeping), it tends to have the highest level of hormone, and it can give you more accurate results.

When using a home pregnancy test, always check the expiration date and follow the packaged instructions. (Always read the instructions very carefully). Try to be patient and wait ten minutes after testing before you check to see whether or not you’re pregnant.

False Positive Results Can Happen

With a home pregnancy test, you can receive a “false positive” result – the pregnancy test says you’re pregnant when you’re not.

You can get a “false positive” result if you’ve had an early miscarriage (sometimes called a “chemical pregnancy”). With a chemical pregnancy, the fertilized egg did implant in your uterus, but for some reason, the pregnancy did not take. You will receive a positive result, because hCG is still in your bloodstream. You will end up shedding the fertilized egg, uterine lining, and other tissue in what you think is a regular period, but in reality is a failed pregnancy.

You can also get a false positive result with a home pregnancy test if you’re taking a fertility drug with hCG, you’ve had an abortion in the last two months, or you have medical condition (such as an hCG-secreting tumor).

Medications (both over-the-counter and prescription) – including birth control pills and antibiotics – will not affect the results of the home pregnancy tests. They cannot give you false positives.

Take Multiple Pregnancy Tests

If you get one negative home pregnancy test, do not automatically assume that you’re not pregnant. Wait for your period to come, and another week or two passes without your menstrual period, buy another home pregnancy test and test again.

If you happen to get a faint positive result, wait another week and take another test to confirm.

When the home pregnancy tests are giving you negative results, and you are noticing early pregnancy symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider and make an appointment with your doctor.

Hello, Rinae so you saw two lines on the test? One line will come up in about 1-3 minutes on every test just to ensure that the test is a good working one and not a dud. Nine out of ten times this line is darker than the line that indicates pregnancy. If another line appears beside it in another few minutes (sometimes sooner) you’re most likely pregnant if you have not taken anything that can give you the HCG hormone such as fertility meds. No matter how light the second line is, if it’s pink it means HCG is present. I would book a blood test with your doctor or at any walk in clinic to be sure.

Pre-cum which is almost always present even if the man can’t feel it coming out ( sorry for tmi) can get you pregnant. I know someone who had sex for literally 3 seconds with no “known” ejaculation and she became pregnant. I don’t want to scare you but I am being honest bc I understand how scary it can be. It’s more scary to not know though. Once you know whether you are or not, you can than figure out your next steps.

Hello, thank you for the post. My question is: I think I have missed 2 periods, and I sometimes feel PMS, but since they are so similar to pregnancy symptoms, I am so worried! I have taken 2 HPTs, both at least 2-3 weeks after my first missed period, and taken more than 1 week apart. Both tests returned negative. Can you tell me if I can be pregnant?

I think if you still don’t have your period after two months, you should go to an OB/GYN and get a blood pregnancy test to figure out why you haven’t gotten your period. Sometimes, your hormonal levels are too low for a home pregnancy test to pick up but a blood test will pick up low levels of hCG

Thanks so much for your reply! The last time I had unprotected sex was 2 months ago (without a condom, but my boyfriend ejaculated outside of me and nowhere near my vagina). From what I’ve read there’s a small chance that precum can contain sperm, but my boyfriend hadn’t ejaculated anytime near before we had sex, so I highly doubt that I can be pregnant. The two negative home tests calmed me down a little bit, but I have missed two periods now. Though I should mention that I have had irregular cycles before (it happens often, but never more than 2 months). I am an international student so I don’t have my own doctor to call. i would really aprpeciate your help if you know whether it is possible for a woman’s period to go missing for more than 2 months. Thank you!

    Hi
I had an inter course just after the day my periods got over, a month ago, it was protected inter course but unfortunately condom tore, so in order to avoid pregnancy I had taken a birth control pill, and two days after I bleed for like 3 days, now I missed my period and when today I took home pregnancy test it came positive. What would you suggest me now?

    Hello,

My boyfriend and I had a form of outercourse about two weeks ago. While there was no penetration, there was “frottage”. I’ve read that if his pre-ejaculate had happened to make contact with my vaginal liquids, I had a minuscule chance of being pregnant. His sperm didn’t get anywhere near my vagina whatsoever, however, but his pre-ejaculate MIGHT have. I’m worried because a minuscule chance is still a chance. I don’t believe I was ovulating at the time of the incident. Should I be worried about being pregnant?

I personally would not be worried. If you don’t have your period, take a home pregnancy test. But since you got your period right after you had outercourse, I do not believe there is any risk of you getting pregnant.

Hi, I’m 15 years old. Two days ago, I missed my period. I am supposed to get it every 27 days but its been 29. My last period cycle was 24 days long. I’ve been going to the gym for a few weeks and I’m not sure if maybe that’s the reason my period is irregular. It’s never been irregular before. I haven’t gotten any symptoms. I’ve gotten just a little tiny bit of cramping but still no period. I’m afraid I might be pregnant.

You’re 19 and you don’t know this answer?? Education about sex is very important. If you didn’t ejaculate or penetrate, then no, there’s no way she could be pregnant. Before you decide to have unprotected sex, learn the facts.

I still haven’t gotten my period since November 2012. Should I take another test? I noticed my breasts are quite fuller and perkier and only today I’ve started getting cramps. These are usually signs or a period but I can’t help but wonder if I’m pregnant, is it still too soon to take a test?

Hello my name is che, im 24 years of age. I want to ask what is the reason why i had my period very early. My boyfriend is working in abroad, he came for for his vacations for just 10 or more than 20 days. I had my period last October 23, and it took 5 days. Then me and my boyfriend had sex on Nov 8. After than I had a period again last Nov 13 and it took 4 days. Then on 18 before he went back to work in abroad we had sex twice and he came. Then last Novemeber 28 i had a period again and it took 3 days only. But since my boyfriend left i was so stressed. So i dont know if stress was the reason why i had early period or because thats the sign of implantation. Is sometimes implantation have heavy bleeding or just light bleeding? But i always expereincing headache. And since November 11 until today November 13 i had a brownish to light red spotting. I have lower back pain now and insomia. So i dont know if im pregnant or not. Okay, so 1) Just being fingered does have a chance to get a girl/woman pregnant if the guy has sperm on his hand or finger, but it is very unlikely
      2) If you were pregnant, your period would have fully stopped or you would have been spotting during August……..it is not possible to get your period during pregnancy and some girls/women often mistake spotting or light bleeding during pregnancy to be their period.
      3) If you were pregnant, by now, your belly wood have been showing since a few months have already gone by and you would have been experiencing some.of the symptoms in which you did not mention in your post.
      4) having a later period many months after the fingering does not mean pregnancy, you are most likely stressed from the amount of worrying you are doing, because if you were pregnant you would have noticed a missed period during August and you stated in the post that you have since then been getting your periods

So, having covered all of that, I highly doubt you are pregnant and you should not worry about it.

Hi. I’m 20 years old and never been pregnant before. I have a very irregular period. My last perios was in April or June and still haven’t had another one and it is october. Just about a week ago I started getting pain in my abdomen and in my back. My fiancee felt my back and felt how tense my muscle was. I started feeling nauseous after everthing I eat and still feel that way. I even have times were I gag like I’m about to throw up but nothing comes up.I asked him to get me a box of two first response home pregnancy test and both came out positive but I did the first one in the morning and the second a few hours later that day. I told my mom and grandma and they both said I should go to the doctor just to get it verified, but do think I could be pregnant. Could I be pregnant and would going to doctors be good to get it verified. Also, my nipples have been more sensitive and darker. I also smoke ciggerettes and feel nauseous and loss of breath after one. I know that if I am pregnant I will stop smoking but could I be? I’m new at this so any information will help. Thank you.

I started charting this month for the first time ever. I had a negative hpt on Sept 1, started my period on Sept 7th (normal 5 day nothing significant). I am currently on cd 23 and just got a positive pregnancy test. How is this possible. All of my temps are really low, I have taken OPK all month long that all showed I was NOT ovulating. I did take 2 test, both show positive. Could this be a false positive? My next period is not due until Oct 7. This is way too early to receive a positive result. Opinions? thank you

Hi my name is Lisa and im 18,
a month ago me and my now ex bf had sexual intercourse unprotected, at first having a baby was a thought but now that we broke up he doesn’t want to be a dad. I have been feeling pains in my lower abdomen and lower back but no signs of my period. I took a home pregnancy test and it came out negative but yet I havent got my period. Is there any other possibilities on my situation or should i wait and keep testing?

    Hi DP,
I’m 21 & always use protection with my boyfriend. The first time we had intercourse was about a month ago (August 20th); we didn’t use protection then, but he didn’t ejaculate at all the entire time. I was due for my period the 8th of September but it is currently the 15th and still no period. I’m usually irregular so I wasn’t too worried at first. Reading these posts makes me think otherwise, though. My breasts are definitely larger and tender. I’m unsure if this is a symptom of PMS or early pregnancy. Should I invest in a home pregnancy test or just wait a few more days to see if my period comes?

Hello, I am 21 with a very irregular period. July 21-28 was my last cycle and before that was feb. I had unprotected sex around aug 12 or 13. A week and a half after, I started to feel different. I am not too sure if it is from a major change in my life or if it is because i may be pregnant. I get really hungry and eat less than a child, but end up feeling like i have to throw up. I have been having mild cramps, I have been gassy, and I am always tired. ( i am taking 3 hour naps and i don’t nap) Headaches in the evening, (my headaches are very rare), i recently lost weight and get constipated and at random times through out the day i just feel nauseous. I can’t tell if my nipples are getting darker, from a distance in the mirror it looks like dark rings around them. I am not too sure if I am or not. I took 3 hpt’s and all came out negative. Today is sept 11 where i am, I bought another set of test and was wondering if i should take it or not. I am so confused, but I do need to know as soon as possible. any advice. also, my grandparents cat never really cared for me now it always comes looking for me or needs to be in my bed or near my stuff.

Wow, Lulu. You definitely sound like you are pregnant, from all your symptoms. I would go see a doctor and ask for a blood pregnancy test (which can be more accurate at detecting the level of hCG in your body than a normal urine test).

Hi. I’m a little confused about what I’m dealing with right now. I’m 26 with 1a daughter already (age 4). I was on depo for almost 3 years then I switched to the pill. I’ve been off all birth control for almost 3 months now. Husband and I are ttc. Last month my period was the second week of the month. My period has still yet to come this month. I had faint brownish/pinkish/faint red spotting on the 25th and 26th of this month. I took a hpt two weeks ago with a negative result. Took another one first thing this morning, again with a negative result. For at least 3 weeks now I’ve had headaches, light menstrual like cramps in my abdomen and lower back, my breasts feel fuller, had dizzy spells, and my urinating has increased. Could it still be too early for a hpt to register?

Have you had a positive test yet? Just curious cause your situation sounds similar to mine.

My partner and I have been sexually active for about 20months now without any method of birth control. We are always very careful and never had any problems. My period is alway on track and I never miss or am I late. I am now about 6 days late and having early pregnancy symptoms. I have taken 3 hpt and all are negative, but my body doesn’t feel right and I’m never this late. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I stopped the pill on May 12, I had my period on may 19 and again on June 22. My husband and I are trying for a baby. I have not yet had my period again and I thought it might be due to my body getting use to not being on the pill. I have had four home pregnancy test…all negative. In the last week I have had a few stomach cramps, an upset stomach and nausea comes and goes. What would be my next option?

I haven’t had my period since last may 25 2012 so 3month no period, since then I have taken 4 home pregnacy tests and 1 at the doctors and so far have all been negative. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I am sexually active and use to be on the depo shot. The last time I got the shot was about a year ago. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon. P.s. that was my first time getting the shot.
