A missed period and morning sickness are often the first signs that women have that makes them wonder, “Am I pregnant, or am just premenstrual? Is this PMS or Pregnancy?” A home pregnancy test, and a visit to the doctor will confirm or contradict your suspicion.

If you are indeed pregnant, you may have to deal with nausea in early pregnancy – a.k.a. morning sickness. And despite its name, morning sickness doesn’t just hit in the morning. The nausea can plague you day and night. It is typically worse during the morning hours. Nausea can also be accompanied with vomiting. In some cases, you may be throwing up every hour, or every few hours.

Every woman experiences morning sickness different. You might be nauseous and vomiting constantly, or you may be lucky and just feel nauseous all the time. Up to 50 percent of all pregnant women will experience vomiting, and 70 percent of women are nauseous early in pregnancy. [Read more…] about 10 Tips for Dealing and Surviving Morning Sickness

Prenatal Massage and its Benefits

by Shellie Braeuner

Guest Post by Shellie Braeuner of Kids Audiobook Reviews.

Prenatal massage is a growing trend in the United States.

When a woman is pregnant, there are massive changes in her body. Women’s hormones change how she holds weight. Muscles in the abdomen and back tighten and flex with the growing child. As breasts change size and weight, even the shoulders can become sore and tight.

Pregnancy-related aches and pains are unpleasant. Having your husband or significant other rub your shoulders and back is nice, but it doesn’t beat a professional massage. Prenatal massage is performed by a professional masseuse who has experience with the unique shape and special needs of a pregnant woman.

Prenatal massage helps pregnant women relive stress, manage pain and increase circulation all without the danger of drugs. Obstetric nurses, doulas and midwives know massage can help a woman during labor. The therapist needs specialized training to help women in this very special time in their lives.

X-Ray Exposure in Pregnancy and Infants May Increase Cancer Risk

by DP Nguyen 18 Comments

For years, pregnant women have been told that a single x-ray won’t harm their baby. While this may be true – the radiation that you receive from one or two x-rays isn’t significant enough to cause adverse effects on your developing baby – new research suggests that a single x-ray during pregnancy may actually harm your child in the long run.

The new study suggests that children who were exposed to X-rays in the womb and those who had X-rays within the first three months of life are at an increased risk of cancer. [Read more…] about X-Ray Exposure in Pregnancy and Infants May Increase Cancer Risk

How Bad is Cocaine Use During Pregnancy?

by DP Nguyen 10 Comments

Everyone knows that cocaine use (and illegal drug use) is harmful during pregnancy. It’s dangerous not only to the woman abusing drugs, but also to her unborn baby. But just how bad is cocaine for the developing baby?

According to new research, cocaine use is linked to smaller, more premature babies – a baby born before 37 weeks pregnant. Premature babies already face a number of health complications, mostly because their lungs and other organs aren’t ready to function on their own yet. Preemies are at higher risk for life-threatening infections, and they are more likely to die within the first week of life.

Premature babies born to cocaine-addicted moms are at even higher risk for health complications and serious illness. They are more likely to face illness and health problems as a newborn, and they will probably face long-term disabilities, including cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and early death. Obesity in Pregnancy – Why it’s Risky

by DP Nguyen 9 Comments

The newly released 2010 Dietary Recommendations for Americans highlighted the seriousness of the obesity epidemic in the United States. Being overweight or obese doesn’t just affect your personal health. During pregnancy, your weight has the potential to negatively impact your developing baby’s health as well.

Obesity in the United States has more than doubled in the last three decades. According to CDC Obesity Trends, in the late 1970s, only 15 percent of adults were obese. By 2008, this rate has increased to 34 percent. Today, an estimated one in five women is obese at the beginning of her pregnancy. (You are considered obese if you have a body mass index (BMI) that is over 30.)

Many overweight and obese women can go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies, however you should be aware that maternal obesity during pregnancy is associated with many complications, including:

  • Potential birth defects
  • Fetal death (miscarriage or stillbirths)
  • Gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops during pregnancy)
  • Cesarean delivery and complications during the labor and delivery process.
  • Macrosomia (delivering a very a large baby)
  • High blood pressure in pregnancy
  • Preeclampsia – a serious form of hypertension that may place both your health and your baby’s life at risk. [Read more…] about Obesity in Pregnancy – Why it’s Risky
