gum disease and pregnancy

Are you pregnant and experiencing swollen, bleeding gums when you brush? You may have pregnancy gingivitis – a type of gum disease, characterized by gum inflammation. Pregnancy gingivitis affects more than half of all pregnant women (between 50 to 70 percent), and it’s often due to the increased hormonal fluctuations that occur in pregnancy.

Many pregnant women do not believe that their oral health can affect their unborn child. However, because of the infectious nature of gum disease, gingivitis in pregnancy can sometimes cause complications for the baby within your womb. It is therefore extremely important that you visit your dentist at the first sign of gum disease – i.e. swollen and bleeding gums.

Morning sickness (nausea and vomiting in pregnancy) is the bane of many pregnant women, and it can make your life miserable – especially in the first trimester. You may feel nauseous all the time, or you may be spending all of your time in the bathroom puking your guts out. The severity of this pregnancy symptom varies from woman to woman, and even from pregnancy to pregnancy. There’s no way to tell when morning sickness will strike, or how nauseous you’ll feel in the first trimester.

How to Prevent the Flu in Pregnancy

Pregnancy and Flu

Guest Post by  Jocelyn.

Pregnancy and FluFall and winter are absolutely my favorite seasons. There’s nothing I like better than apple picking on a lazy fall afternoon, baking apple pies during those early-to-dark evening hours and snuggling up by a soothing fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa and buttered toast in hand for the perfect wintry night. But with the arrival of these seasons, unfortunately, also comes the dreaded flu season. It’s always my fear that I’ll catch the flu and be robbed of precious fall and winter days in which I could be carving pumpkins or sledding mountains. It messes up exercise plans. It ruins your pattern of smart eating and throws you for a loop. And since pregnant women are in the “high-risk” category for catching the flu, knowing how to protect yourself is absolutely crucial in this phase of your life.

Medicine in Pregnancy: An Overview

medication during pregnancy

medication during pregnancyTaking medicine in pregnancy is a controversial topic. There’s no clear cut answer to “Is it safe to use medicine during pregnancy?” Healthcare providers typically don’t recommend that you use medicine unless the benefits of it outweigh the risk.

As a rule of thumb, however, it’s best that you avoid any medication (if possible) in the first trimester of pregnancy, since this is a vital time in fetal development, when the risk of birth defects is the highest. Try to avoid any medicine, whether over the counter or prescription, until the second trimester (after you are 14 weeks pregnant). [Read more…] about Medicine in Pregnancy: An Overview

medication hyperemesis gravidarum

Guest post by author and blogger, Christina Simon.

medication hyperemesis gravidarum Handing me two prescription bottles, in a stern, somber voice, the pharmacist, an older man with graying hair, looked at me and said, “take these medications only if you absolutely must.”

At about 8 weeks pregnant with my second child, I was desperate. The morning sickness began promptly at 6 weeks and immediately became unbearable. Extreme nausea and vomiting plagued me all day and night. When I stood up, I got dizzy and threw up, even if I hadn’t eaten. I was exhausted from the lack of sleep and was subsisting on bread and juice.
