by Guest Writer Leave a Comment

Guest Post by Blake.

Becoming a mother for the first time is very likely the most exciting time of a women’s life. It can also be the most overwhelming and nerve-wracking. Here are some tips for getting through the preparation and early months of motherhood.

Top 5 Do’s for First Time Mothers

1. Do prepare as much as you can in advance. Have the nursery ready, diapers stockpiled and bag ready for the hospital. Pack your freezer with casseroles, individual servings of soups and breakfast burritos to heat up for quick meals. Put important papers in a folder, including health insurance information and important phone numbers.

2. Do cherish the time you have before the baby arrives. Relish naps, uninterrupted TV time, date nights with your partner and other activities you enjoy. [Read more…] about Top 5 Do’s & Don’ts For First Time Mothers

Why a Bare Crib is the Safest Place for Baby

bare crib is safest for baby

Guest post by Authors, Dr. Rachel Y. Moon, M.D. and Dr. Fern R. Hauck, M.D., M.S.

bare crib is safest for babyWhen you’re expecting, it’s easy to be charmed by the dozens of different suggestions for decorating the nursery. Magazines, catalogs, web sites and baby boutiques display what seems like every possible theme for bumpers, comforter covers, changing table pads and mobiles. Friends who quilt or crochet are probably asking for your color preferences as they get started selecting fabric and yarn.

What concerns us as physicians, however, is that so much of the bedding traditionally used in babies’ cradles and cribs has been shown to be unsafe. The fuzzy toy bears and bunnies that look so cute snuggled next to a sleeping baby can also be dangerous.

pregnancy first ultrasoundAre you having a first pregnancy ultrasound? What an exciting milestone in your pregnancy. Here is what you should expect to happen during the first ever ultrasound in pregnancy.

Usually, pregnant women have their first ultrasound at 16 to 20 weeks, yet some have when they are four to five weeks pregnant.

Older mothers

Guest Post.

Older mothersWith women being in better health in their later years than ever before and with more reproductive options available to women today than ever before, more and more women are now able to, and increasingly choose to become mothers later in life. So older mothers, over the age of 40 are an increasingly common phenomenon today.

Many women find that they are emotionally in a better place and have more secure financial resources at 40 than they did earlier and so feel that 40 is the ideal age for them to embrace motherhood. Many women find that they make better mothers at age 40 than they may have at age 20; having learnt more about patience at its virtues by this time.

So clearly there are advantages to being a mother at age 40. However there are other things to keep in mind if a woman is considering becoming a mother past the 4th decade of life.

internet safety tips

Protecting your children from inappropriate and harmful content is possibly the hardest of all internet safety precautions, as this kind of content is absolutely insipid online. Inappropriate and harmful content includes images or video of pornography, violence, anti-social behavior and vandalism.

It is the content that we can monitor efficiently offline thanks to censorship, TV listing times and classifications boards. However online content monitoring is still relatively non-existent and classification and blocking content considered the responsibility of individuals and parents not governments. We are however not here to point the finger, as the problems of internet policing are many and not likely to be quickly solved.

With that in mind, however, there are a number of steps you can take as parents to ensure that your children have the maximum amount of protection from inappropriate and harmful content. [Read more…] about Internet Safety Tips: Protecting your Children
