Four Best Video Games For Kids

by Guest Writer 1 Comment

By Guest Blogger, Maria Davis

Now, hold on a minute. You probably read the title of this post, and immediately started drafting a rant in your head. The last thing kids need is more video games! They need to be outside! Why, when I was their age, I had to be dragged into the house, kicking and screaming the whole way! And if it was raining outside, we made our own video games with cardboard boxes, tape, and markers! Video games—bah!

Okay, you have a point. Kids definitely need to get exercise, and not spend the entire summer planted in front of the TV. But consider this: It’s hot out. In fact, it’s so hot that the National Weather Service is issuing heat advisories in several states warning people to stay indoors. Some days, even when it’s not raining, it’s simply too hot for kids to be outside running around for very long, and if they’re going to stay in the house, you definitely want to keep them occupied or — be honest — they’re going to drive you crazy. But video games don’t have to be vacuous wastes of time, energy, and brain power.

These four video games will not only keep your kids engaged, but educate them, and get them off the couch. [Read more…] about Four Best Video Games For Kids

Trying to Conceive? Good Oral Health Improves Your Chances

Trying to Conceive Fertility

By Guest Blogger, Becca Ozard.

Trying to Conceive FertilityWhile it may seem strange to link oral hygiene with your chances of conceiving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy, recent studies have concluded that bad oral hygiene can impacts a woman’s ability to both get pregnant and to carry a baby to full term without the risk of complications.

Just earlier this month, on July 5, 2011, researchers met at a reproduction conference in Sweden and they argued that oral health could have a major impact on a woman’s fertility. The scientists presented preliminary research that suggested that a woman’s chance of getting pregnant can depend on how well she takes care of her teeth and gums. Good oral hygiene can boost a woman’s chance of pregnancy. [Read more…] about Trying to Conceive? Good Oral Health Improves Your Chances

My Agonizing Decision To Take Prescription Medications For Severe Morning Sickness

medication hyperemesis gravidarum

Guest post by author and blogger, Christina Simon.

medication hyperemesis gravidarum Handing me two prescription bottles, in a stern, somber voice, the pharmacist, an older man with graying hair, looked at me and said, “take these medications only if you absolutely must.”

At about 8 weeks pregnant with my second child, I was desperate. The morning sickness began promptly at 6 weeks and immediately became unbearable. Extreme nausea and vomiting plagued me all day and night. When I stood up, I got dizzy and threw up, even if I hadn’t eaten. I was exhausted from the lack of sleep and was subsisting on bread and juice.

My Kids’ Best And Worst Birthday Parties: Creating Memories, Going All-Out (Or Not) And Having Fun!

kids birthday party

Guest post by Author and Mom Blogger, Christina Simon.

kids birthday partyDepending on where you live, kids birthday parties can be a really BIG deal. I live in Los Angeles where, starting as early as preschool, the competition heats up to see who can have the most “fun” party. I put “fun” in quotes because it’s also code for the most expensive or elaborate party. The most extravagant parties we’ve attended have been at the American Girl Store and private parties featuring numerous entertainers, petting zoos, food stations, fancy catered menus and over-the-top party favors.

I tend to give my kids options for their parties that fall somewhere in between extremely low-key and overly elaborate. With kids’ birthday parties, you never know what can happen. Seriously, we’re talking about little ones so expect the best, but prepare for…anything. I love planning parties for my kids (even though they were born 8 days apart!). Flying with Kids: Navigating an Airport with Toddlers

Airplane Travel with Toddler

Guest post by Richard Greenwood from Flight Centre.

Airplane Travel with ToddlerAirports are busy and hectic places even for adults, so negotiating one with a toddler in tow can be a nightmare. We’ve come up with our top tips for making sure you keep your cool next time you and the little one are off on a family holiday.

Prepare Ahead

One of the biggest fears of most parents is losing their child at an airport. With thousands of people rushing around it can be hard to stay on top of things and toddlers can and do go missing.

If your child were to go missing you want to feel safe knowing that they will find their way back, so planning ahead is essential. You can buy or make your own kid labels that either hang around their neck or wrist or as a sticker on their clothing. On these labels you write their name, address and your mobile number so that if anyone finds them they can immediately bring them back to you. Why My Postpartum Anxiety Was Difficult to Diagnose

by Guest Writer 2 Comments

By Guest Writer, Stacey Ackerman

The first time I noticed something was wrong with me was three weeks postpartum. It was after the birth of my third child, so I felt pretty confident that I could handle this newborn thing. I woke up that morning feeling dizzy. The room started spinning. Everything felt sort of off balance and out of whack, but I couldn’t figure out why. I called my OB/GYN who thought the allergy medicine I had taken was making me drowsy, which seemed like a logical explanation.

Over the week, the dizziness came in spells. It would get really bad, making me feel like I was living in some kind of dream world, then I would feel okay for a few hours. I wasn’t feeling sad or depressed; just strange and surreal.

I called for a follow-up appointment to learn more about postpartum depression (PPD). I talked to a friend who had given birth two weeks before me and she was taking antidepressants. I didn’t feel like I was depressed, however, I just didn’t know why I felt so off. [Read more…] about Why My Postpartum Anxiety Was Difficult to Diagnose
