Teen Menstrual Cycles: Why Missed Periods, Irregular Periods are Normal

Irregular Period TeenMissed Periods and Irregular Periods are Normal When You’re a Teenager!

Recently, there has been a flood of questions from my teen readers on my popular post, “Reasons for Missed Period – When You’re Not Pregnant.” I want to address the most commonly asked questions to alleviate any worries that teenagers may have about their periods.

Age of Your First Period

A teenager typically gets her first period between 12 and 14 years of age. Some girls can start menstruating as early as 9 years old. Others won’t have their first period until they’re 16 years of age. When you’ll have your first period depends on how fast you’re developing. Some girls are early bloomers; others bloom later. If you haven’t had your period by 16 years old, visit your doctor and find out what’s the hold up. In some cases, however, it may still be normal.

How Long Does a Period Last?

A regular period can last between three to seven days. During the teen years, you can bleed for even longer. Some teenagers have their period for 10 days! The length of your period can change from month to month. The heaviness and color of your flow will also change from the beginning of your period to the end. On Day 1, 2, and 3 of your period, it’s normal for your flow to be heavy. Your menstrual bleeding will become lighter and lighter until your period ends.

Irregular Menstrual Cycles and Missed Periods are Normal

In the first two years after you start menstruating (having your period), it’s normal for you to experience an irregular menstrual cycle. You may have a period twice in one month, or you may go without a period for two months at a time. Likewise, you may have your period for only 2 or 3 days one month, and the next time you have your period, it lasts for 7 days. This is normal during the teenage years. Your body is influenced by your growth (and puberty is a time of major growth), so this can change your menstrual cycle from month to month.

The length of time that your period lasts, and the amount of blood that you experience is influenced by the level of hormones that your body is manufacturing. Since a teenage girl is growing, her hormones are going to be fluctuating and this can change the amount of blood and the length of your period from one cycle to the next.

In a nutshell, missed periods and irregular periods are normal in the first two years after you start having your period. Your body will eventually develop a regular cycle. The average cycle length is 28 days, but not every woman follows this textbook rule. A regular menstrual cycle can run from 21 days to 35 days (or longer). If you’re a teenager, as long as you have one period every three months, you should be fine. But always call a doctor if you’re worried about anything.

*Very Important* – If you do not want to get pregnant, always use protection when you have sex. The only 100 percent way to protect yourself against STDs and pregnancy is to NOT HAVE SEX. Take it from an oldie – it’s always best to wait and save yourself for that special person.

When Should You Worry about a Missed or Irregular Period?

Missed periods and irregular periods can be normal in teenagers, but you should consult a doctor if you’re a teen and you haven’t had your period for at least three months. This may be a sign of a reproductive problem, like premature ovarian failure.

If you have at least one period within that three month range, you shouldn’t worry. This can be normal, just a byproduct of your fluctuating hormones. Your menstrual cycle will eventually even out, and you will get a normal cycle (although it may not be the perfect 28 day cycle.)

Reasons You May Miss Your Period When You’re Not Pregnant

If you are sexually active and you notice something unusual with your menstrual pattern, there is always a chance that you could be pregnant. Condoms are only 99 percent effective. Birth control pills are only effective if you take them on a regular basis. Skipping a pill can put you at risk for pregnancy.

Other reasons you may experience irregular periods, or missed periods, include excessive exercise, birth control pills, stress, and eating disorders.

Excessive Exercise – If you’re an athlete, you may notice a change in your menstrual cycle if you’re training super hard or exercising all the time. Excessive exercise can result in less bleeding, fewer periods a year, or your periods may stop completely. In most cases, your periods will return to normal within months after you stop participating in the strenuous sport.

If your period has stopped completely and it’s been over six months, you need to go see your doctor to rule out any medical problems.

Birth Control Pills – Sometimes, birth control pills are prescribed to help regulate your period. They can, however, cause you to experience a missed period. Hormonal methods of birth control, which contain the hormone progesterone, can cause you to miss your period.

Stress – Whether you’re in middle school or high school, schoolwork can really stress you out, especially if your parents are putting a lot of pressure on you to succeed. Stress is a normal part of life, but a ton of emotional stress can affect your period. Too much stress in your life may cause you to experience missed periods or irregular periods.

Eating Disorders – If you have an eating disorder, like anorexia or bulimia, they can slow down your bodily functions and cause your period to stop completely. Please contact a doctor or reach out to an adult if you have an eating disorder. You can also reach out to me, and I’ll be here to help you through this to the best of my ability.

PMS Symptoms Can Be Similar to Early Pregnancy Symptoms

If you’re a teenager who is sexually active, you must be aware that there is always a chance that you may be pregnant. A missed period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy. Please take a home pregnancy test, if you are ever worried. If you test negative at first, and your period still doesn’t come, take another test in about a week or so.

Always keep in mind, however, that premenstrual (PMS) symptoms can mimic early pregnancy symptoms. Even for the most experienced woman, it can be difficult to distinguish the two. For example, breast tenderness, fatigue, and food cravings are normal PMS symptoms, but they are also pregnancy symptoms. Nausea and vomiting can also affect you when you’re PMSing, and it’s an early pregnancy symptom. Taking a home pregnancy test is the only way for you to tell whether or not you’re pregnant.

I am also not sexually active or do any sports/exercising outside of PE class.

On all of the sites, was written that I am pregnant. But I know that it’s not true because I would not get pregnant and I am only 14. • Ch January 1, 2017, 10:32 pm

Getting your period 6 days early or 6 days later than usual, especially when these are your first few periods, is completely normal and there is nothing to worry about.

  • Sophy December 19, 2016, 12:22 pm

I didn’t have a period when I was 15 even thought I had all of the signs of pubery and then we went to doctors with my mom and my doctor told us that everything’s normal and she gave me some medicine to see If I even can have a period. It turned out that I can but since then I didn’t get my period again till 6 months ago (I’m 16 now) and that was the last time I had period.

  • Julia November 29, 2016, 6:09 pm

Hey, I’m 14 and I’ve had my period for 3 months, I know I don’t really know my normal cycle but the 2 times I’ve had it it has been 5 days long. I’m on my period now but it’s lasted 9 days, it’s a little less now but it’s taking a while to fade out. Please help! I’ve seen many different articles with different opinions. I don’t know if I should go to the doctor or not

    • Ch January 1, 2017, 10:34 pm

What you have to realize is that for almost a year, maybe a year and a half even, you period will most likely not be the same length every time, and it is common for girls to have irregular periods for a while until their body regulates itself. So you should not worry for now.

  • Tiki November 28, 2016, 7:17 am

hi I’m 13 and I got my period shortly after I turn 11 it’s been pretty regular I didn’t really track it, but my mom did and it seem to be pretty regular but I know it seems really soon but I haven’t had my period in 4 days and I’m kind of freaking out, and I don’t want to tell her because I’m afraid that she is going to mad say it’s nothing and tell me to calm down and stuff or that she’s going to be mad at me or something and I’ve been looking up reasons it could be late and a lot of them are saying like stress and stuff and within the first like a couple of years you can getting your period is late sometimes but I’m still kind of worried. Could you help?

    • Ch January 1, 2017, 10:37 pm

If your period is 4 days later than usual, that is not a problem at all. That is completely normal, especially for someone your age. It may even skip a month, who know. Also, you can’t control when your body decides to have your period come or go, so your mom should understand that this is normal for teen girls like you and I don’t think she will be mad at you for having a 4 day late period…

  • Help. Meh November 16, 2016, 11:40 am

Hi.. So the 1st time I had my period was in 2013, I was 13. It was irregular, sometimes it would be in the beginning of the month, or in the middle or even in the end.. However in January 2015 I missed it, I only had it again in March 2016 . In September 2016 I started highschool, I’m in a new country with a different language since July 2015, I stressed a lot because I don’t know anyone here.. I missed September, October and November. Should I worry?? Cause I’m freaking out!

      • Help?? December 24, 2016, 9:02 pm

Hi, I am a bit confused… I am 13 years old and I got my first period recently. My cycle was normal until this
month and it hasn’t come yet… it’s probably about 20 days LATE, I am a bit worried but I do participate in dance and I am a competitive dancer and have intense practice every single day. I was reading about how it could be due to intense exercise but I am still not sure

    • Confused November 24, 2016, 1:00 pm

I don’t think you should be worried as your body is probably making up for the delayed periods.

    • Ch January 1, 2017, 10:40 pm

Probably nothing is wrong. Stress, excess exercise, and hormones imbalances can cause your period to do that. I would not be worried unless your period does not regulate itself out again over time.

  • Mia November 4, 2016, 9:12 am

Could I have been late on starting my period becuase i was stressing and traveling alot?

    • Someone August 1, 2016, 12:53 am

  • Laisa July 11, 2016, 1:05 pm

Hi, i’m twelve. The last time i had my period was on June 15, 2015. I don’t know if it’s happened to anyone else.

    • Laisa July 11, 2016, 1:08 pm

I have gone to the doctor but that was in December.

    • Daria July 17, 2016, 9:33 pm

Almost the same thing happened to me! I haven’t had my period for half a year and I’m still to scared to go to doctor but I kind of know what the problem is. I’m very underweight (I don’t have anorexia or anything) but I’m still way too thin for my age and cannot force myself to eat… If you have the same problem as me, the reason is you being underweight or not getting all vitamins that are needed for your body.

The same thing is with me, when asked i say ive already had it. im young, very thin, and everyday i do fighting training and gym for a couple hours each, i havent had mine for a very long time, since my eating problems started up again, i used to have it as normal but then everything just stopped. Im too scared to go to doctors but i dont know what to do…

  • T July 10, 2016, 2:01 am

It’s July 10th right now, and I last got my period on May 28th which lasted 7 days- like normal. The one before was in early December of 2015. It’s just that I’ve been having my period for almost two years now, but I’ve only had 8 or 9 in this entire time. After my first period, I didn’t get the next one for seven months! Should I be worried?

    • T July 10, 2016, 2:33 am

Actually scratch that, I’ve only had 6, not 8…

  • Monique July 10, 2016, 1:21 am

  • Leah July 9, 2016, 8:04 pm

Hi. I need someone to tell me what’s going on… So I’m 15 and I got my period when I was 12 and it’s been pretty regular. I might have been maybe 2 weeks late a few times but not recently. The last month I have been sexually active but we used protection and there is no way I am pregnant. I just got my period and I’m getting period symptoms but it’s very very light bleeding and now there’s nothing. I have been just starting my sport and it’s a lot of training so I think that might have something to do with it. I took a pregnancy test and it said I was negative. I also am having cramps and if I was pregnant i would be 4 weeks so I don’t know if I would have morning sickness by now or something. Please help!!!!

  • Sarah July 5, 2016, 4:25 am

Hi, I’m 13 and haven’t gotten my period since January 2016 and it’s July 5th 2016. I’m still a virgin and no bf. Please help!

    • emily July 8, 2016, 2:37 pm

I think you should go see your doctor. You should always see a doctor if you haven’t gotten your period in over 6 months.

  • Lety June 22, 2016, 11:58 am

So I am probably late on my period and idk what it means because mine is usually exact and maybe lately I have been stressed a lot. Can that be the reason because I got mine when I was 11 and I am now 13. I know I am not pregnant because I am a virgin and I don’t have a bf and I have never had sex. Help

  • Nadia June 22, 2016, 10:54 am

Hey I’m Nadia and I’m 16. I’m a Virgin. I’ve had my period since I was 12 and it was always very regular. Coming every month, and lasting 7-9 days. Usually they were pretty heavy through the middle. The first and last days were always very light. Since November this year though, my periods have been really wierd. Some months they didn’t come. Other months I just had light bleeding for a few days. Some other months i had light bleeding for two almost three weeks at a time. Then, in May I had regular bleeding for like three weeks. Now it’s June and I have my period and I have cramping, but my period which started two days ago is heavier than it’s ever been before. I soaked through an entire heavy duty overnight pad while I was sleeping which has never happened before. And I put a new one on at around 6:45 am, and by 9am it was pretty much full. Please someone give me an idea of what’s wrong with me.

    • Gen June 19, 2016, 5:54 am

Hey Ana, its alright, you’ve only had your period for a year right? That’s still in the irregular phase, it’ll come when it comes. If you’re really worried maybe talk to your mum about how much iron you’ve been eating? That can reduce your periods a lot. But you’re okay, okay? Nothing to be scared of, bodies are just a bit weird sometimes

  • Denise June 15, 2016, 4:25 pm

I am 16 years old and have always gotten my period 28 days or a month later. I recently got off my period about 3 weeks ago. And 3 weeks later its back on, or at least I think its my period. It has been heavy the first 2 days, with symptoms of cramping, etc. And it became light and ended the 3rd day. What could this mean?

  • Aravind June 9, 2016, 5:48 am

Hi my girlfriend is 17 and she had her first period at the age of 12 and sometimes it used to be normal sometimes not but it was on going as it was normal for a teen girl at that age to get irregular periods. Last years it was normal like couple of times she had it normal 2 or 6 days late. But from past 4 months there’s no sign of her having periods the last she had hers was in January and from then she did not get it till today and is been really worried at it, depressed and stressed. (No she’s not pregnant, never had sex at all, but she masturbates so she’s sexually active) I don’t what to do? She’s really uncomfortable to visit a doctor as she’s shy and uncomfortable with these questions a doctor would ask. I’m blank and helpless about this one thing. Please help me.

  • Charlote May 24, 2016, 4:51 am

I’m a 17 year old girl and I’ve been having my period since 9 years of age. It used to be once every three months, and mum said it was okay. But since last month, my cycle has shortened drastically. I’m having a period twice a month.
I read in the article above and it said that this is normal in the first two years of menstruation. But this is my 7 going on 8 years of it and I am very scared.
Could this still be normal? Could it be a heredity thing because I know my older sister has had a continuous period for like years now (a month or two break but it just keeps on going).
Could it just be that my body is starting to balance out the hormone or whatever it is?? I really hope it’s a normal thing because it’s freaking me out too much and causing me a lot of stress.
    Please help me

I’m 16, I got my first period when I was like 11-12 and then I didn’t get it again till I was like 13 only to have it show up very very randomly sense then; it’s been 4-5 years and I’ll go sometimes 6 months to 8 months without a period. This can’t be normal. There is no way I’m pregnant btw, sometimes my period will come 2 times in a row then to only not show up for months. As far as I know on my moms side we are VERY fertile but I know nothing about my fathers side. There’s no way to ask btw. When my period does come it can either be two days or five. I would never have to guts to go to a Doctor about this.

  • Leah April 8, 2016, 4:14 am

My names Leah, and I haven’t had my period in three months. I’m 15 turning 16 this year and I’m a virgin. I am naturally pretty skinny and weigh around 98 pounds. I play netball every saturday, and have started noticing that I start to feel very light headed and start to see black spots when I’m playing. My mum keeps saying that she thinks that I’m losing weight and I’ve started noticing that I used to be a size 6 in jeans, but now they’re getting too big around my waist. PLEASE HELP ME!! I don’t know what’s happening or what to do.

    • Grace June 6, 2016, 5:48 pm

You probably just need to eat more. It sounds like you have a pretty high metabolism which causes you to burn through calories more quickly than others. The black spots could be from dehydration or vitamin deficiency. Try eating more and taking a multi-vitamin.

  • Nikki April 7, 2016, 9:03 pm

I am 16 years old and started getting my periods the summer going into 6th grade (around 12). I have always been pretty regular but this year my period has been extremely irregular and I am starting to get concerned. I have only gotten my period 3 times since September and my average cycle is about 70-80 days apart. I know I can’t be pregnant when I don’t get it and I’ve never taken birth control, but it is starting to get concerning especially considering I’ve been so regular for so many years. Any ideas on what could be wrong with me or what I should do?

And I never really stress on things. I don’t know what’s wrong with me I can’t be pregnant, I think it might be from excercise 4 days a week or more. Or it could be my low weight I need to get my period back I’m very worried that I won’t have it anymore or that I have some odd disease. Please help!!!

  • Laurain February 21, 2016, 8:50 am

I had my first menstruation last august 2014 at 15 yeas old. It’s been a year and 6 months. I am always irregular, It came up to the point where in summer (April) it took me 5 months to have a menstruation again. And then i’m always 2-3 months to have menstruation. Should i be concerned? Like now, my previous menstruation is from last Dec 3 2015, and i have my menstruation again in february 19, 2016 up to now (Feb 21). I have heavy flows on the first day always, then the second day very light, and mostly my menstruation lasts only for 3-4 days. P.s i do not take pills, and i’m virgin.

I’m 16 years old, my periods began when I was 11, but I have started having irregularities in my monthly cycle, I didn’t have my periods for three months, and I visited a gynaecologist. She prescribed Deviry, which i had to take for a course of three months, during which I had my periods She told me I’d be on my normal menstrual cycle after that, but this is my first month without Deviry, and I didn’t have my periods. Isn’t deviry only hormones? I’m really worried, is this kind of irregularities normal? Will I be having any serious problems in the future?

hi.. So I’m 13, I started my first period later in October after being in the hospital having a kidney stone (Wierd!!) anyways, after that I believe I didn’t have it until early January. After that, like thirty days later, I had it again in February. But I haven’t had it since. I know it said something about stress and athletics, I am involved in dance, but I only do that like an hour and a half a week, but I have been stressing for grades and other things going on right now. Is this normal?

  • Brittany March 23, 2015, 10:47 pm

Hi I’m 18 years old. I had my first period when I was 11, I think and have always had a pretty clockwork cycle, evey 28 to 31 days, with a week long cycle, with a few times being a bit early or late. But now I noticed around a month ago that I had seemed to started to spot heavily for 5 days and then stopped, I didn’t tell anyone about it, and two weeks later got my regular period but noticed it was a bit lighter than normal, and that my usual painful cramps I get during my cycle had been little to non existent. But now it seems to be happening again, and if it is my period, that would make me 8 days early for it. I havent told my parents, and I’m terrified to go to the doctors about it. Could you please help me.

im 13 years old and i’ve had my period for about two years. i know you say irregular periods are normal as a teenager, but i’m a bit concerned about mine. i’m concerned because i’ll have my period heavy for 3 weeks straight and then i won’t have my period at all for a month, and then i’ll have it again for another 3 weeks or two weeks. my periods usually are never only a few days long or even a week long. it concerns me because i’m afraid i’m going to become anemic having such heavy periods for so long. i also get heavy nose bleeds occasionally and i rip at my head when i’m stressed out so i start bleeding there too.

  • anonymous March 16, 2015, 1:48 am

so basically this is really bad but i accidentally ejaculated into my 17 year old gf while we were having sex. we always practice safe sex but in the moment we forgot the condom. we know that her period is really irregular *a few pregnancy scares have come from this* and she doesn’t show many symtoms of pregnancy, she only says that her abdomen hurts and she is occasionally nausous, while eating, and that sometimes she cant eat at all and sometimes she is ravenous. It has been over a month since her period should have come and we’re not really sure what is going to happen. Any help?

And She has no other symptoms. But, this time she is not having her menstrutation till now. She is already four days late. Is there something to worry about??..

    • Elizabeth January 5, 2015, 10:00 pm

Don’t worry, missing a period for a month is perfectly normal, and you are definitely not pregnant. There is no way to become pregnant other than having sex, so that “toilet seat” theory definitely cannot and will not make you pregnant. Having a couple missed periods is no big matter at that age, so you shouldn’t worry unless it extends to 6 months or more of having no period.

Is this normal or should I go see a doctor ? & no im not sexually active in still a virgin . Please I need advice! .-.

  • Francesca December 7, 2014, 9:21 am

I’m 17 years old, I got my first period when I was 13 and did not get it again for six months. For a year afterwards I had my period regularly and there was no issues, cramps weren’t even that bad. However, about the age of 15 to now, I have missed my period on every second to even third month. I just want to be aware of the possibilities of what is going on, I’m not pregnant because I have had a few pregnancy tests to confirm that I’m not, and sure enough they are all negative. I would really appreciate your advice and comments on what may be wrong before I conjure up the courage to go to the doctor about the issue.

Another note: I do stress out easily, to the point of finding myself biting my wrist and hands, I most likely suffer from depression and some people have even suggested bipolar. I don’t know if these would contribute to missing my period so often? If so, shouldn’t these other mental issues contributed during that year of when I had my period on the average time and length of a period/menstrual cycle? Thank you 🙂

    Hello madam.
My girlfriend is 14 yr old nd we r sexual active but she missed her period. Date was on last 24.9.14 but today she is late 8 day we Oldways use condom but on 17.10.14 we haven’t sex with condom but after 20 min 2.3 shots without condom but I m not discharge. today I take a pragnancy test that was normal negative but I might worried why she is late plz plz help me.

    • Huda November 6, 2014, 8:50 pm

Is sex with a 14 year old legal where youre living?

Has she taken the pregnancy test and shown negative? If so, chances are she is not pregnant but being only 14, her periods are still regulating themselves. It might be a good idea to take another test just to be sure.

Im most concerned about her age and why you are in a sexual relationship with a 14 year old?

I last had my period around the 29th of august 2014, I didn’t get my period at all in September, I had slight cramps and everything I usually get before I have my period but that time it just didn’t come? and now im scared that my period wont come this month, ive had the cramps and all and now they’ve gone away like they did last time, I keep worrying about it and I think it might be effecting it from not coming again?

  • Sian September 5, 2014, 9:04 am

Hi, I’m 16, I started my periods when I was 13. They’ve never been regular- I can have a 40 day break one month and then 20 the next. I’m really not sure what my last ‘proper’ period was- I had a normal period on June 17. But then on July 16 I had slight brown discharge, which only lasted two days, then on the 28th of July I had the same thing. I am sexually active, so naturally I thought I might be pregnant, but I’ve done several HPT & all were negative. I’ve had no pregnancy symptoms, but I haven’t had any pms symptoms either, and I should have had a period by now? I’m not sure what to do:( Is it likely that I am pregnant?

  • Bailey September 1, 2014, 6:11 pm

So I had my first period when I was 14. I’m now 16. And had been about normal ever since but I have had 2 late ones (only by 2 days tops) just this July was when I decided to have sex with my boyfriend and we used condoms and always have. We’ve had sex 6 times total. The last time was on August 23 2014. And I was supposed to get my period on the 28th. It’s now September 1st and I still haven’t gotten my period, but I’ve had back pain and lower abdominal pain (like cramps, and gassyness) we always use condoms with spermicide lube to have a little more protection. I just want some reassurance on what is happening… I haven’t told my parents that I’m sexually active yet and I’m scared to. I have bad anxiety and just recently started school, cheerleading and dance up again all together at the same time. So I don’t know if it’s just stress and all the exercise I’m doing but it’d be great if I could get some help! Please and thank you!

  • Alex August 24, 2014, 8:05 pm

Hi, the first time I had sex with my boyfriend was about a month ago, it was only for about two minutes because he didn’t have a condom. A week later I started ovulating. A week later we had sex again and it was unprotected. (Bad decision I know.), but he did not ejaculate anywhere near me. My periods are always irregular but always come every month. Recently had some discharge, one day was a small amount of thick, white discharge, and then clear stretchy fluid. I also have period symptoms,( acne, slight cramps, joint pain, etc.) Could I be pregnant?

    • DP Nguyen July 14, 2014, 9:42 pm

I don’t think you are pregnant. I think it’s just your stress, and sometimes your cycles can be very finicky when you’re a teenager. So I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Hi I’m 16 and I haven’t had my period since maybe around the early teens in May. I’m normally irregular on my period but I’ve had protected sex on 6/14/2014. I’m not on birth control and I’m experiencing some brown streaky discharge and a jock itch. My mom knows about the itch and since I’m a lifeguard she thinks being in the water a lot is what’s causing the itch. But I’m not sure about the period thing. I’m worried. Please help

    • DP Nguyen July 14, 2014, 9:45 pm

You might have a UTI or a vaginal infection of some kind. You should go see a doctor and get some antibiotics or creams to treat it.

Hello. I just turned 17 years old and I had my first period when I was 15, after that it was regular for about 3 months but then I got my next period only after a year and its been 5 months now and I still don’t get my period. So in 2 years I had my period only 4 times. I know thats normal to have an irregular period when you are a teenager but I am a little concerned about it. Should I be worried??

  • Megan June 19, 2014, 7:38 pm

So i am 17 years old and i barely get my periods. I am a virgin so i am not pregnant. I first got my periods when i was around 15 and they were never regular but i thught that was normal because i had just started. I am now 17 and i dont think i have had my periods in around 6 months maybe i never keep track, which is probably a bad thing. However before that i would only get them once every few months and they would only last 2 or 3 days. I am a vegetarian and have been one for around 4 years now so i dont now if it is juct a lack of iron but i dont think it is. I take iron supplements most days but i sometimes forget. I dont want to tell my mum becasue she doesnt like me being a vegetarian and she says if it affects my health she will make me eat meat and well i really dont want to. I have also had alot of stress with school and family and i moved country and stuff so i dont know if all of the stress could be causing my periods to stop and be so irregular. Please help!

It might be next month, or it could be in a few months. Periods are unpredictable sometimes when you first start. Try not to worry.

  • Isabella April 29, 2014, 9:58 pm

I’m a 15 year-old virgin and I’ve always had a normal period. Recently in late March, I got my period and after it had finished, around April 9th or 10th, I started to get brown discharge/old blood. This has not stopped and its April 29th. I used a tampon for about 5 hours when I was on my last period and everything was fine. I was supposed to get my period about a week ago. I have no idea why I have abnormal discharge or old blood(not sure which) if I’ve never had sex. I don’t have any pain either. Please help!

    • DP Nguyen April 29, 2014, 11:59 pm

Are you still having the brown discharge?

It’s normal to have brownish staining at the end of your period. For example, I will spot for a 1-2 days randomly after I think my period has ended. I will think my period has ended and then I get some brown discharge/old blood like you are describing for a day or two, and that is totally normal for me.

      • Isabella April 30, 2014, 9:24 pm

Yes. I have had the brown discharge for over two weeks now, and the brown discharge did not start immediately after my last period. I finished my period late March and then the discharge started around April 9th-10th. I don’t have any pain and I’m a virgin so I’m not sure if I have an infection or something…

        • DP Nguyen May 11, 2014, 10:47 pm

hmmm, are you on birth control? sometimes birth control can cause staining (like you’re describing). if you are worried, go to your doctor. he/she will be able to figure out what is causing your brown discharge. it may be related to your period or it could be something completely different.

  • Christina April 19, 2014, 8:52 am

I just started menstruating July of 2013 at the age of 17. For the first 3 months, I had a regular cycle, after that, I had no period for 4 months. I just found out I have polycystic ovaries. In January 2014, I got my period again. Then I skipped it for another month and then in March 19th of this year, I got another period that lasted 6 days. On April 3rd 2014, I am pretty sure I had breakthrough bleeding that lasted 6 days. I am not pregnant of sure so why did my period become irregular after it was regular in the beginning?

    • DP Nguyen April 22, 2014, 9:16 pm

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a really common reason for missed period. So because you have polycystic ovaries, I am almost positive this is what is causing your period to be so irregular.

  • jade February 26, 2014, 5:54 pm

    Hi there
I’m almost 18 and my periods don’t come every month. This year I have only had one period but I haven’t spoke about it with any of my family and friends I sometimes lie saying I’m on when I’m not. I don’t know what to tell my boyfriend either. I’m worried for what what it could mean as I still get the symptoms (cramps, emotional etc) but not the actual period. I get worried when my friends say how regular they are.. I lie to make them think im normal but I don’t tthink I am cause I’m not like everyone else 🙁
    please help!

    • DP Nguyen March 3, 2014, 1:44 pm

You might have a fertility problem or an ovulation problem. So I would go see your gynecologist to figure out why you aren’t having regular periods.

  • Kayla February 10, 2014, 2:11 pm

I am 15 years old, and on Sunday (2/2/14) me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex. He did not cum inside of me, he pulled out and the cum went everywhere. Some went by my vagina, but did not go inside. My period was supposed to start Saturday (2/8/14) . its been pretty much on time for the past few months, give or take a day. But it hasnt came yet. I am wondering if this is just a coincidence, because it has happened once before, I missed just about almost a whole month , and after that iw as back to having periods every month. I could really use some help, please

  • Laura January 5, 2014, 9:45 am

Am I’ve just turned 18 years old. My periods have always been regular. Had unprotected sex mid October but he did not ejectulate as it was for 5 mins play but did not insert into me deeply. November had normal 5 day period and again in December on time. Have not had any sexual contact since October….just now have had 2 day heavy(normal period) and spotting on 3rd day? Could I be preganant? Am so worried :-((

    • DP Nguyen January 5, 2014, 11:14 pm

No, you are not pregnant. If you had a regular period AFTER you had unprotected sex, then you are not pregnant. You had two days of heavy bleeding, and some light days, this is a normal period. However, it might just be a little different that you’re used to. But periods are like that. They fluctuate on the heaviness from month to month depending on your stress level and etc. So you are not pregnant. Try not to worry!

      • Laura January 6, 2014, 8:01 am

Thank you for your reply… Am not sure why after having my short period that ended yesterday my boobs are hurting soo much :-((

        • DP Nguyen January 6, 2014, 9:54 am

I’m not sure why your boobs are hurting so much. It might be a hormonal thing, lingering affects of your period. BUT if your boobs keep hurting and they do not stop, you need to go see a doctor to rule out that it’s not anything serious. But you are not pregnant!

  • Stephanie Cardenas October 31, 2013, 2:33 pm

I am 19 yrs old… I havent got my period for this month I am a week late from when I was suppose to get it. I am a virgin and I saw my boyfriend and we didnt have sex yet we were messing around and he got cum on his hands but he cleaned it with a rag and we just chilled for about 15 minutes anf than he was just messing with my vagina but not in the whole he was just rubbing it is yhere a chance I might be pregnant? Am I just stressing? PLEASE HELP! I am very scared!… 🙁

    • DP Nguyen November 9, 2013, 8:22 pm

I doubt that you are pregnant. So try not to worry. Hopefully your period will come soon.

i am currently 15 years old. i missed my period for 4 months now. i also have jock itch, but it is getting cured. i didn’t tell my parents because i’m scared. i only lied that i hav it every month. i’m normal. i don’t feel anything bad just healthy. ps: im completely a virgin. i don’t even ask the school clinic because they might call. PLEASE HELP! NEED TO KNOW! REPLY PLEASE DX

    • DP Nguyen September 11, 2013, 12:17 am

I think you should be fine, if you are a virgin. Sometimes your menstrual cycles can be off when you’re a teenager, but you should tell your parents. They will understand. You may want to go see a doctor to figure out why you are missing your periods. Maybe you aren’t ovulating? Sorry I wish I could be more help.

Hello I am 17 years old and have a bit of problem with over weight… but anyway my period was missing for 2 or so months but it came back this month from 8 – 12 after that I got some spotting but in the end it was fine for couple days and now today this morning 19 august there was blood again, could it be because of missed period before now everything has to flow out? Or something along those lines, please help I am living not in my country where I was born so I really wish I could skip with going to doctors thank you

    • DP Nguyen August 21, 2013, 5:59 pm

I think you are just spotting, and that can be normal occassionally. I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless it was heavy bleeding. Good luck

I am 15 now and stressing out! I got my first period like April last year, and it wasn’t until August that year I got my next. First one was Normal.. Ever since then, they have lasted for one day. And been really irregular! It’s just randomly one day!! I hate it, just when I am sitting in class.. There is no estimated time. Is not even monthly, it’s been like 2 months between, then 4 months and more!! So irregular it’s very annoying! I get that discharge like every day, and god awful pain in my stomach quite a bit. Not sure if the pain is period pain, but it hurts toooo much!! Please help, I am worried as hell!!

  • Samantha June 13, 2013, 5:45 pm

I’m 14 years old almost 15 and missed my period it’s only been 3 days but normally I get it a week early. I’ve been having my period since I was 11 years old. I’ve only had sex once and it was unprotected.. My boyfriend told me that I’m probably just late and that he didn’t cum inside of me, but can’t you get pregnant anyways? Even if he didn’t? I’m not even having signs of my period or anything. This is really not normal for me. I’m scared and I don’t know if I am or not.. And I don’t feel comfortable talking to my parents or family about this. Because I know I would be in a lot of trouble.. I don’t know what’s going on and I just need an answer from someone.

  • Rianne June 12, 2013, 11:04 am

It means you are 17 years old and tempting fate. It doesn’t matter how much you love your boyfriend now, the last thing you want to do at 17 years old is have a baby. I am 23 years old raising my 2 year old niece because my 15 year old sister decided to have unprotected sex.luckily I had my life together enough to be able to take care of her.a word of advice save yourself now. Visit your local Planned Parenthood and find A discrete birth control. You have a lot of life of head of you. Be smart now while you still can.

For one, I was wonderig if you could give me some tips on how to keep track of my period? For two, I wanted to know if I should be worried or not that I completly missed it it December?

I started my period this Halloween and I know that this means my periods will be irregular as I only recently started. However I had my last period about a week ad a half ago, and now I started another one today. Is that normal?

  • Robyn December 4, 2012, 6:42 am

i’m 15 and started my period nearly 3 years ago, my period is sometimes regular and others npt. My mum earlier this year told me to have the implant as she found out that i had sex with my boyfriend of 2 years. Having the implant can mess up your cycle as i missed a month in July. Ive again missed a month even though i have had symptoms of coming on and have been ill due to stress, and now my mum is convinced im pregnant! what should i do??? x

  • Kimberly November 25, 2012, 1:49 am

I’m 17 got my period when i was 11 but only got it normally the first 3 or 4 months after then i started getting it only like 4/5 times a year. But since 2010 I believe, I started getting it only twice a year & I’ve been like that since then. I don’t know what’s wrong i need you too Please help me when you have time.

    • DP Nguyen November 27, 2012, 10:04 pm

Hmm, it’s not normal for you to only be getting a period once or twice a year. I would highly recommend going to see a gynecologist to try to figure out what’s going on. You may have an ovulation problem – your ovaries aren’t ovulating every month as they should. Perhaps it is PCOS or another health issue. But your doctor will give you clearer answers on what is causing your irregular periods.

Im 17 and i havent had my period for the last four months. should i be worried, people keep askn me if im pregnant but i dont know .

    • DP Nguyen November 24, 2012, 6:39 pm

Go see a doctor to figure out what is causing your missed period. Take a home pregnancy test if you are worried.

Hi, I’m 16 and have been sexually active for about 2 months. My periods have never been regular, they come every few months. But only having started being sexually active fairly recently, I’m kind of panicking this month. I DID get my period last month, but I have this nervous thing feeling like I should get it this month too? I don’t have a very good sleeping pattern or eating habits, I usually only eat like 2 meals a day. I think I’m dehydrated, and being close to exams week I am fairly stressed. We always use a condom, but having missed it I’m panicking thinking I’m pregnant. Is this probable? Is it more likely my eating habits/sleeping habits/ stress levels are having an effect on my cycle? Please help when you get the chance.

  • Katherine November 8, 2012, 11:46 am

Hi, I’ve been having periods for over a year now and I’ve never missed one but they keep getting further and further apart. First difference was only 30 days and now it’s over 40. My mum has regular periods and says she never had anything like this. She did have something that made her periods heavy and painful though. I thought I would be a bit more like her and actually I get more scared there is something wrong with me each later period. Please help!¡!¡

  • Amanda November 8, 2012, 5:02 am

Hi, I’ve had my period since i was 10 and I am currently 18. My periods have always been heavy but sometimes it is lighter then usual and sometimes it varies from being heavy for a months then light one month then back to heavy. Is this normal for my age? Is it possible for my cycle to still be somewhat irregular even though its been over 8 years? And also is it possible that being stressed can lighten the flow of a period?

I am not on birth control. I am sexually active for over 3 years and always use protection

    Thanks so much.

Hi, I’m 17 and still abstinent. Never had sex at all. I haven’t had my period for a month now. I got my period when I was 13 and they have always been irregular but this is the first time that I missed one in about a few months. I know you can’t get pregnant from masturbation but I was wondering….. I don’t like talking to any body about these kinds of things but I need some advice… Is there a reason it’s doing this to me? Also i just started a tae kwon do class 2 – 3 months ago and I have had quite a bit of stress… But I’m still worried I could be pregnant or have something wrong with me…. Could you help me?

  • Haley September 23, 2012, 1:36 pm

I’m 16. The last time I had sex with my boyfriend, we had sex with a condom then he went to the bathroom, peed and showered and then we had sex again, but without a condom for a little, but then he put another condom on and we finished. That was about 2 weeks before my period. Today my period is a week late (has not come yet). However, I started to have signs of my period coming about a week before my period was due. My breasts were just a little sore, but now they have become more sore and i do not know if i am just paranoid, but i think my nipples are a little darker. Five days before my period was due i took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Two days ago (5 days after my missed period) i took another pregnancy test and it was negative as well. My brests are sore. I am still having discharge as normal as usually do, i have no cravings ( but i did a week ago), and over the past two days ive had a pain on my right side near my hip bone. Are these signs that my period is coming? Also, I have never had regular 28 day cycles my period is always a little off. For about two weeks know i have been so stressed about thinking im pregnant that i have lost 10 pounds. Can that amount of stress lead to my late period? One last thing, I have struggled with anorexia for about 2 or 3 years now and the stress makes me sick to my stomach and gives me no appetite. Also, since my last period, i have become vegan. Can my lack of eating, new diet, and stress cause my period to be late? All of my pregnancy tests have proven to be negative and I have a pain in my right side sort of where my ovary would be i guess lol. Help in anyway that you can please.

Hi 🙂 I am15 and recently I had my fasting month. My menstruation finished at the end of July around the 20th. After that for the whole month of August it did not come until the end maybe 27th or somewhere there. But the issue is that my period has not stopped UNTILL now! It came around the end of August and for some reason it was a heavy period unlike before and it slowed down until 2 days ago when only little spots would come and then the flow just increased again today but not as heavy just the normal. Oh and i started boxing training a day or two after my period started on the 27/8/2012 or so which requires heavy exercises and I do it 3 times a week for 2 or 3hrs with breaks ofcourse. Right now I am just freaking out wondering if I have cancer .. 0.0 PLEASE HELPPP ANd yup still a virgin . 🙂

Try not to worry. It is definitely normal to have some variability in your period length at your age.

Im 15 and I just lost my virginity about a week ago. My period was regular until then and it was supposed to come the week that I had sex and now it’s over a week late. My friend told me that one you become sexually active, your period can become irregular. I’m not sure if that’s true. Can I get some help?

Hi, I have a few questions

I am 21 years old and I recently lost my virginity to (now) my ex boyfriend. We hav had sex 3 times after that first time… ALWAYS using condoms. After my first time, my period was right on time, but the day after I finished my period, we had sex the second time. Before, during and after sex, we checked to see if the condom was still on properly (which it was) and he came inside me all 3 times (again) WITH the condom on. I have been taking cortisone pills for my excema. I have phoned my doctor and he said that my period would be delayed from the medicine…. Now my question is, would I be pregnant because my boyfriend came into me? (Btw, it was about 3 weeks ago the last time we had sex)

Please help, I’m stressing and it doesn’t help…
    Thank you

Hi i’m 14 years old and i’ve always had my period every month and i never knew when it was due or when it was late, but i figured it was on time because i’ve always had it every once a month. but recently it has been late for 4 or 5 months? and i’m completely sure i’m a virgin and NOT sexually active. and i got so paranoid to the thought of somehow someone raped me or something, but i’m seriously not sexually active! do you think it would be stress or lack of sleep? should i wait longer to see if it comes? OH AND PLUS – i usually get those white mucous that comes out before and after a period, so i’m thinking it’s coming soon. but still, please give me your opinion on it!

By age 20, you should be having a regular menstrual cycle. I really recommend that you go see a gynecologist or a doctor to figure out what is causing you to not have a normal period. Good luck

I havent have my period in like 7 month now but only thing that keep happening to me is spotting all the time and i wanted to know if i should worry or not

  • Adtr_luver July 9, 2012, 9:12 am

Okay, so I’ve been reading all of these and I’m pretty sure I’m not pregnant. BUT I’ve been so extremely nervous about the whole subject. Anyways, I’m 17 years old and I’ve been having every PMS symptom right now, but no period. My boyfriend and I have been using condoms with a spermicide and the time we had sex, it was the day immediately after my period ended. And, he never ejactulated. It’s been a month now and I’m normally pretty regular. The past week I’ve been soooo stressed about my body and dissecting every symptom I’ve been having. I’ve been at a music festival all outside (which I’m not used to) with extreme heat and I’ve been running around like mad all week. I’m 3 days late now. So what do you think? I need just a little more piece of mind.

    Good day Ms. DP Nguyen

I’m Charlene and I’m 15 yrs. old. My Menstruation is so Irregular. My last menstruation is about Last year November and it’s July now. I don’t know what to do. i told my mother about this but she won’t believe me and she don’t let me see my doctor because she believe that it’s jut normal because my two sister had their first menstruation when they are 15 or 16 years old maybe and i have my first menstruation when i’m 12 years old. She told me i was just young when i had my first menstruation that’s why. Could it be possible that my menstruation stop because i was too young when i had start to have it? and also ma’am i don’t have boyfriend ever since because i’m waiting to be at Legal age that’s why i’m 100% virgin. PLS. do help me. I don’t know what to do. Hope you’ll reply to this Ma’am. Thank you. I find your article very helpful ^^

  • Matty July 5, 2012, 12:35 am

So my boyfriend and I had protected sex but the condom broke, the next day I took the Plan B pill, well later that day I started bleeding and I have been for three days now. So, my question is, is it my period? Usually my cramps only last for the first day into the second but this time it’s not really going away! Should I be concerned, worrying about being pregnant or is it nothing?

  • Tessa July 2, 2012, 8:45 am

I’m 17 and I’ve been on the pill now for 3 months and am currently on my 3rd day of my ‘skip week’. I take my pills everyday and I am sexually active. I had unprotected sex a week or two ago but he didn’t cum inside me. My period hasn’t come yet and I’ve been spotting now for a few days. I’ve recently started road running after a months break from exercise. Just need to have my mind put at rest for why my period may be running late.

Hi, I’m 19 years old and about 2 weeks ago I got on the depo-shot. Exactly 8 days later, me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex and he did not pull-out. I’ve had my period since I was 12, and since then they have been very regular. Last month, my period was 2 days late. This month, I’m a week late! Is it possible that I’m pregnant? I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative. Please help!

    • Haley August 11, 2012, 1:39 pm

Sometimes sex can mess up a regular period cycle (known from personal experince) so my advice to you is take another test and if its negitive, dont worry about it and if its positive… congrats :/

  • Molly June 27, 2012, 2:04 pm

hii… Im twelve years old on July 2nd. I started my periods on the day of the UK Royal wedding in 2011 when i was ten, they’ve always been about 5-7 days long and never heavier or lighter. Since about october/november every single period has been 32 days apart, and it was due four days ago. Im obviously a virgin so it cant be pregency but im just getting a little paranoid because they’ve always been so perfect and to schedule and eaasy to deal with. Is there anything wrong?

  • Jess June 27, 2012, 12:59 pm

Hello, I am 14 and i started to have my period at the age of 11 and just to be clear I have not had sex at all. I have had a normal period for about 2 years but then on October 31st of last year i stopped having my period and haven’t had it since. I went through a phase where i was trying to eat healthy but went over extreme. I lost about 25 pounds and weighed 104 pounds. I went to my doctor and she told me that i was anorexic and need to gain more weight. That was in January and in the Febuary i gained back all my weight and have maintained a healthy weight of 125-128 pounds. Now it is July and i still haven’t had my period. Its almost been 9 months and i don’t know what is wrong. Did i damage myself? Please help me.

  • Lynn June 23, 2012, 2:34 am

Hello, DP Nguyen, I am 13, 14 in August, and I’ve had my period since I was 11 and a half (3 months before I turned 12), which is the same time when my mother first started hers, except in July and I started mine for the first time in May. But this is not the problem. I haven’t really kept track of my periods but I’ve usually had them when my mother gets them (which she says is normal). But last month I had mine a couple days later than my mothers. Just letting you know about my cycle. But this month, my mother started her period and I didn’t start mine, and she’s done already. She looked it up because I was worried and said this is normal and that I’m going through a hormone surge or something like that. But here is the reason why I’m concerned, and it is a little embarrassing to tell you but I have to tell someone.
Well, I wanted to see what sex felt like so I put a hotdog up my vagina, not too far, but it was in there. And I HIGHLY doubt it could get me pregnant, but for a few days last week, I had nausea and extreme hunger (the hunger is probably because I was going through a growth spurt) but I’m still a little worried that the hotdog could have gotten me pregnant. I’ve been a little bulged in my stomach, but that is probably because I will get ready to start my period… hopefully. And when I was nauseas and hungry, I kept thinking I was pregnant (yes, from the hotdog) and I was really stressed and worried and I cried alot because I didn’t want to be. But now I feel VERY stupid for thinking that because I’ve looked it up and it appears to be just a normal teen thing, your cycle can sometimes vary. But I’m still worried about that hotdog. Can you PLEASE help me?
Oh, and I am a virgin. I’m sorry for this long comment, but I just have to pour out to someone.

    • Lynn June 23, 2012, 2:45 am

Oh, and I forgot to mention that my breasts are growing at the moment, and they hurt when I squeeze them, but are not tender to the touch like they are when you are pregnant, as I hear. When I push in on my nipples it hurts, but that has always been like that. But the areola on my right breast is VERY large, more than I remember it (although I don’t really look at my breasts THAT often), and my left nipple seems to be more open. Just some more details I forgot to leave out! I am hoping you can help me with all of this.

      • Lynn June 23, 2012, 8:48 pm

AND I forgot to mention I am getting montgomery glands, and today the side of my back has been hurting a bit?

  • Haley June 22, 2012, 3:11 pm

Hey, I’m young, probably too young for sex but I’ve done 3 times already. Ever since I lost my virginity (about 2 months ago) my periods have been 17 days apart. I wasnt worried about it the first time but its the second month it’s happened. Theres about a 90% that I’m not pregnant so I’m not concered about it too much but I am worried about and STD or something. Can you tell me whats up?

  • Gabby June 20, 2012, 7:06 am

Hi. this is extremely urgent so i would appreciate a prompt reply:

So, i`m 14 and got my period when i was 12. I turn 15 in september this year. And although my periods have never been completely regular, i`m finding my current situation to be way more severe. The last time i had my period was january this year and even that was much lighter than usual. since then i have had very little spotting and almost now indication of a period since April. I am 100% sure i am not pregnant as i have not participated in any sexual activity at any point in my life. Weight loss, however, could be a possibility but i am not entirely convinced. I did lose something like 3 kilos (from 60 down to 56.5kg) but i doubt that is enough to make a difference. I consulted my sister who is studying medicine and is in her third year. That was at the beginning of April and at that point she said not worry as her periods were very irregular when she was my age, too. But since then i have been extremely preoccupied and have not had time to seriously think about it until now. PLEASE, PLEASE reply because i am in serious stress mode right now and am living thousands of miles away from my family on exchange and so am feeling extremely vulnerable. Thanks.

Hi, I’m Kathryn, my period has been acting up this month, its been brown with a bit of red
and has been appearing all scattered in the month, as in it appears for about 3 days, then is gone for a week, and appears as this brown discharge again for say 2 days. This has never happened before, and is freaking me out! Also, on the days I don’t have my period it sometimes feels as though I’m leaking, but then it’s not blood. Please help! Any and all advice appreciated!! Thank you

  • kiki June 16, 2012, 6:19 pm

I got my first period when I was 14. Then it didnt come until 6 months later. Now my period is 9 months late. I last had it in September. I’ve just done my GCSE’s so could it be to do with stress because I’m not sexually active.

  • neisha June 14, 2012, 11:54 pm

  • Nocy June 5, 2012, 12:29 am

Ever since i started using birth control injections i have stopped menstruating and its affecting me with back pain and i want to know is it normal?

    • DP Nguyen June 5, 2012, 11:26 pm

Birth control injections stop you from ovulating, so you will NOT have your period on them. But I do not think that you should be having back pain. I would talk to your doctor about your back pain and see what’s going on. Good luck

  • Ariana June 2, 2012, 10:05 pm

Hi im 15 years old and I have had my period for a little over two years now… yet i still have like no armpit hair. i’ve had only lik one or two on each side for a really long time now. does that mean i still have a chance of getting taller?

    • Haley June 22, 2012, 9:57 pm

Girl, your LUCKY not to have armpit hair, its a pain to shave. What doyou mean when you say “do I still have a chance of getting taller?” If your 15 then you should grow a bit more, I’m around the same age and I havent grown a whole lot taller since seventh grade. I don’t worry to much about so neather should you 🙂

Yes,i have exprerienced it before,my first time i had unprotected sex,i was scared because i thought i was pregnant, although no sperm went inside me, all the stress can lead you to the symptoms of pregnancy,i took a test 3 weeks later & the results came back negative. We had sex again 3 more times after our first time,he always ends up releasing the sprem when he’s no longer penetrating me. Our 3rd time the condom broke and we stopped right away (again did not finish inside me) but my period is 23 days late,i have breast soreness and cramps like im gonna get my period but i dont, backaches are also there randomly,i dont know whats going on,i dont think im pregnant am i ?

  • joanne May 28, 2012, 3:47 pm

I have irregular periods.. it can go from 2-3 months. I started experiencing this right after I gain weight from having my first child. Since I’ve gained weight, my period change. I started my period 2 weeks ago. First few days was dark and little. Its not enough for a regular pad. Well, this week its heavy. I’m getting blobs of bloods. Some are dark and some are really red. I was told not to drink cold water.. with this hot weather who can resist cold water. Well, since then I’m getting clumps of chunks. Could this be the cold drinks I’m drinking?I’m still on my period right now but really red. I felt a chunk and and sat in the toilet ..I check and wipe myself .. and again I can feel the warm blood flow. What can I do? I’m scared! 🙁 help me.

  • Sarah May 28, 2012, 2:35 pm

hi, you can track your menstruation and have an overview of your fertility days with the help of a menstruation and ovulation calendar, e.g. http://www.mymenstrualcalendar.com where you can also find some additional information.

  • mk May 28, 2012, 3:04 am

I am 17 going on 18 years old. I am not whatsoever sexually active. I have had my period for the last 6 years. For the last 5 years (at least 4 and 1/2) i have been regular every 34 days for 5 days. I am as of today two weeks late. The week prior to when i was supposed to get my period i had all the usual symptoms: tender breasts, cramps in my ovaries, excessive thirst and hunger as well as headaches (this is all routine everytime i get my period). This lasted a little longer than usual continuing for about 3 days after i was due. As i said i am two weeks late. I am a bit concerned as to why that may be and if i need to consult my GP?

Ok so I’ve missed four months of my period. The first one I did take a home pregnancy test and it was negative the middle of the second I went and saw a doctor, he said that I wasn’t pregnant and I needed birth control. And even though I’m eighteen my parents don’t want me to take birth control cause they still don’t know about my activities. And i havent felt stressed at all. Today I just hit my periods after four months and I’m in so much pain and I’m bleeding ALOT! Is it normal for my body to do that? Is it like making up for the last four months? I would like to a least know what might be going on…

      • Dawnie May 29, 2012, 5:03 pm

Hey Louisa there is a such thing called women condoms where u insert it into Ur vagina nd it opens up to block da cervix for semen won’t enter. Now everybody Dnt use it as much but it is defiantly out there.
@Curb Honey u are not pregnant because u used protection nd u always did (far as u say). Jus to let u kno boys usually wear da condoms and during sex onli ONE CONDOM SHOULD B USED!!

hi :)….well me & my boyfriend last had sex on the 5/1/12 he didnt wear condom he also didnt pull out and there have been other times we’ve had sex with out pulling out or wearing a condom i’ve had my period i think im not really sure cause it was very short when i always get it for like 4 or 5 days but for some reason i only get it for 2 or 3 days but it would keep stoping druing the day why could that be? is there any chances i could be pregnant 😀 <3

    • Gengar May 25, 2012, 7:35 am

It was probably spotting, yes you could be pregnant, take a test.

  • Gengar May 24, 2012, 11:19 pm

Hi, My boyfriend and I have never had sex, but we do do other things. I knoe its rare to get pregnant from other things, but that it can happen. His semen has never touched my vagina, and i make sure to either not have him touch it or wash his hands with soap right after. I was supposed to get my period on the 9th, as it has been around there for 2 months, but it was in the 20’s for 5 months before that (its always slightly irregular). Nothing is really different other than bloating and i feel as though my nipples have changed colour but I might just be psyching myself out. I took a test yesterday and it came out negative. I also have been under a lot of family related stress recently, what are the chances I am pregnant?

It would really suck if i am because i was supposed to start my birthcontrol this month and with all the family issues going on it’s something we really don’t need to deal with..

  • Jonathan May 24, 2012, 10:16 pm

Hi, around the last week of March maybe, me and my girlfriend had sexual relations a few days after she had her period. After that day, she hasn’t gotten her period since and it’s been about 10 weeks now. She hasn’t had any signs of being pregnant and I haven’t ejaculated inside of her. I would always pull out when I felt “tingly”. Please help. We’re really worried and I don’t know what to do. D:

    • livvy May 28, 2012, 9:52 am

      have her take a test

  • diana May 23, 2012, 8:40 pm

Every few months I skip my period from 1-3 months. I am not sexually active, but I do tend to get stressed out about school work. Is this normal or should I see a doctor?

    • Haley June 22, 2012, 10:07 pm

I don’t think it’s that big a deal, but if you are worried, it doesnt hurt to go to a Doc.

  • polly May 23, 2012, 12:51 pm

My period is currently 1 week late (today) and I have this small amount of brown discharge. I have not had sex, however a guy did touch me (down there, but not finger. So he didn’t actually enter it) and that happened about 6 weeks ago. I’ve had my period since 2009 and this has never happened. I’ve taken 2 tests that have come back negative, but I’m stressing and i don’t know what to do 🙁 could I be pregnant?

  • Brittany May 23, 2012, 12:37 am

Ok I had sexual relations with a guy on January 28, I was not fertile or ovulating. I reciebed my period a few days later, & had it the next 2 months. I don’t really remember when my period was in April I wad stressing with school, I know I should be getting it soon. If I don’t should I be worried? I was stressing bad over school at thr end of april & then freaked out because I couldn’t remember what date my period was in April or if i haf one that month. Should I be worried is it possibly that i might start having irregular periods?

  • miriam May 22, 2012, 3:44 am

  • Madison May 21, 2012, 6:37 pm

Hi my name is Madison and my boyfriend and I have been having sex every week bu it’s protected, we always use a condom and we always check of its broke. I’ve ha my period sense I was 11, and its somewhat regular. I was suppose to get my period on 5/15/2012 but now it’s 6 days late, and I’m kind of stressing. • DP Nguyen May 22, 2012, 9:53 pm

It might just be stress. Take a home pregnancy test to check out.

  • courtney May 21, 2012, 4:27 pm

I had my first period and It was really heavy, it was just coming out loads, and after that I’ve never had a period since its been nearly a year and I’m nearly 15, is this normal?

    • DP Nguyen May 22, 2012, 9:54 pm

I think it is definitely normal to have a very heavy period, then lighter ones, and for your periods to fluctuate every month. try not to worry !

  • Unathi May 21, 2012, 9:52 am

I had sex for the first time last month and the condom broke,I took a morning after pill a day after having sex,I even took a home pregnancy test and the results were negative, but I’ve been having this creamy discharge(with no smell or weird things)..I heard that pregnancy can cause this sorta discharge…should I be worried??

    • DP Nguyen May 22, 2012, 9:56 pm

Take another pregnancy test if you are worried

  • Mia May 20, 2012, 12:35 pm

If you teen has irregular periods she could also have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome!

My periods were irregular from day 1, and I can’t tell you how many doctors told my mom “she’s young, it’s normal.”
Well it wasn’t normal. Once I finally found a doctor who knew what was going on my life changed big time. With treatment my periods became regular, and my other symptoms improved too. PCOS is one of the biggest causes of infertility, it also puts women at increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Catching it early does matter because treatment can reduce the risk of those things.
At least check with your child’s doctor if she has irregular periods in additon to any of these:
    – rapid weight gain
    – hair growth on her face, neck, or chest
    – prolonged periods (mine were 2 weeks long…not joking!)
    – dark skin on her inner thights, armpits, or especially her neck (there is a noticable difference with any race or skin tone)
    – severe acne

I can’t remeber if i had my period on January… before that I have always had regular periods.. on February my period was normal (seven days) on March it was irregular I had it 2 times that month lasting about 2-3 days each, I took a pregnancy test before I was due to be on my period which came out negative, also on April I also took another pregnancy test in my school at the nurse’s office which also came out negative (are the pregnancy tests from the nurse 100% effective?), to include, on April I was experiencing nausea, and this month on May, I have had my period one time so far but Im not sure if its going to come again. • Cori Whitesell May 16, 2012, 11:38 pm

    Hi Everyone

My name is Cori and I have a question?

My period was late and I took 3 tests and all came back Negative.
Well about 4 days later I had a very terrible cramp and when I went to the bathroom I was bleeding heavily.

Well my period only lasted 3 days and it was heavy all the way through and had clots in it. Me and boyfriend have had sex and every time we do use a condom I never go with out it! I know that condoms are only 99% accurate but its better safe then sorry.

I was wondering if I am pregnant because my period was late and only lasted 3 days, also keep in mind it was heavy and looked like a real period.

    Should I be worried?

If someone can help me I would appreciate it, its kinda hard to talk to anyone when you live with only guys all your life….

  • Sofia Kruger May 16, 2012, 6:01 pm

The first time I got my period, i had it twice, then lost it for a few months. Eventually, it came back, I had 2 more periods, and since then, I haven’t gotten it in 5 months. I’ve gained a lot of weight; around 20 pounds this year. I exercise a ton, and i eat very healthy, yet I can’t loose any weight. I’m still slowly gaining weight. I’m worried that I may have polycystic Ovary syndrome, do you think its possible? Do I need to go to the doctor? I just feel like I need to loose weight too, but I just can’t seem to. Ive had my period for almost a year now, I’m 15, 5’6.5 and 150 lbs. I need help…

Hello, I am 19 this year. I havent got my period since my last one that was on the 8th of March. This is the first time in my lifee that I’ve missed period for so long. I’m quite sexual active, so I took quite a lot of home pregnancy tests.(all diff brands) and they are all negative. Last week I finally went to consult a doc, he didnt do pregnancy test on me because I told him I’ve done it myself and they are all negative, so he gave me Noresthisterone 5mg to induce my period. What I’m afraid now is, the med will give me false hope. I scared my period still won’t come after taking them. By the way, I do suffer cramps and I my body is kinda heaty. I’m really scared.

  • Rachel May 12, 2012, 7:23 pm

Hi, I’m 14 and I got my first period on the 7th of February this year, It was 9 days long. My second period was then 12 days long. I then got my 3rd period for 18 days and then a week later i had my period for another 4 days and then i have it every few days just for 1 or 2 days. It won’t stop!
I am very sporty and sometimes stressed, I don’t know what to do, please reply 🙂

    DP Nguyen
I’ve been regular for about five months now. I’m 18. Never had sex, but me and my boyfriend have done other things. Completely with clothes on, always being careful to never get it near me. Usually I start a day earlier than I did the last time. March I started on the 13th, then the 12th of april, and now I’m supposed to start the 11th of May, but so far I’m a day late, possibly two I’m hoping it will start today. My boobs hurt just like they always do before I’m going to start, but nothing has happened. I always freak out a lot, but we’ve never had sex so I can’t be pregnant. I’m not sure if I should be concerned or not. What should I do? I told my mom and she said I could just be late, and that its normal, but I still freak out a lot. It’d be great to hear back. Thanks!

  • sarah May 12, 2012, 12:45 pm

Hi i am 15 and i have not had sex but it has been about 5-6 weeks since i had a period. i am really scared that i am pregnant (like REALLY scared), at night i wake up and cant go back to sleep because i have panic attacks because i can stop thinking that i am pregnant, is it possable that i might be pregnant because i am so scared and i don’t want to be pregnant and i have no one to talk to.
    thank you

  • Agnes May 9, 2012, 12:20 pm

Can I be pregnant? We did on my 22nd day of my cycle. He didn’t ejaculate inside and he pulled out within 2 minutes. It’s my 33rd day and I’m not on my period yet. I’m pretty sleepless lately, I usually turn in around 4AM. Is this hormonal?

  • Teegz May 9, 2012, 7:30 am

Hi. I’m 19 and just had a quick question. My period was always regular until I was 17, where it became irregular, sometimes not appearing for months at a time. When I consulted a doctor she put me on a medication to help regulate my menstrual cycle, and once it did, I was taken off it. Occasionally, I may skip a month or so, but at the moment (last 2 cycles) me period seems to last at least 15 days, if not more. Is this normal?

  • zoe May 8, 2012, 3:45 am

  • tylor gould May 7, 2012, 10:28 pm

No semen was went in me to my perspective. and i am a week late on my period is possible that i am pregnant or cant it just be my cycle is acting up please respond im very worried.

    • zoe May 8, 2012, 3:51 am

it doesnt matter if u think u are 100% sure he didnt ejaculate in u i still think that u should got to the doctor or get a pregnancy test just in case because u can never b too safe

    • DP Nguyen May 22, 2012, 10:19 pm

Have you taken a home pregnancy test yet? Anytime that you have sex, you put yourself at risk for getting pregnant. remember that condoms are not always 100 percent effective.. .

  • Q May 7, 2012, 11:49 am

I had my baby march 12 of 2012. So it’s going on 8weeks i got my period. it was light at the begging now it’s real heavy, it’s been 7 days. I’m still on how long does it last for?

  • Roxy May 7, 2012, 8:11 am

Hi, I’ve had my period for more than 2 weeks and I’m 13, they are also really heavy through out. Should I go to the doctor or not, I get my period every month and sometimes even twice a month and this month I have got them twice. People say it’s normal but I’m not sure.

  • Saf May 6, 2012, 6:43 am

    Hi DP Nguyen,
This might be a really stupid question but still I’ve been having my periods since I was 10 I’ve never had backpains before just stomach cramps that stopped or weren’t as painful as before when I turned 15. Now I’m 18 and just two days before my periods I’ve had backpains is it natural?
There is another question u’ve said that periods are irregular during the first two years one of my friends had periods when she was around 13 or 14 but her periods are still irregular she gets them after 1 and a half months and they last for about 10days just wanted to know if this was normal?
Im really sorry for taking up your time and I’ll greatly appreciate a response from you.
    Thank you.

I am 16 years old. I started my period when I was 12 years old. I was okay when my periods would change on different patterns every month, but never have I experienced going without a period for a whole month. School is ending for me, I don’t have to worry about homework to get stressed about it. I keep thinking my period will suprise me by starting one of these days. When I think I started, I didn’t. So far it’s been 1 month and 3 days. I am not sexually active, I’m just curious why it hasn’t started. Could you please help me find my answer?
    Thank you DP Nguyen.

  • Alexis May 2, 2012, 11:41 pm

Hi, im 13 and i have been having my periods for about a yr and a half, and they are always 5-9 days long! But my last period ended after 2 days, and this has NEVER happened to me! I have NEVER had sex!!!!!! I dont eat much, but its not an eating disorder or anything. And I excercise a TON every day could that be it? I just thought it was normal since im 13 but its been around two weeks and now my pee is a reddish color!!!! I have eaten beets today (but not much at all!) and I eat them lots of times, and this has NEVER happened to me! PLEASE HELP!!!!! I am REALLY concerned!!!!!!!!!

    • Kelly May 19, 2012, 1:44 am

You should go to the doctor ASAP! You might have something wrong with your kidneys if your urine is reddish.

  • Clara April 30, 2012, 1:54 am

    My name is Clara Jo,
I am 20 and I usually have my period for atleast 4 or 5 days and this month I was only on for 3 days. I have had some extreme cramps where I just want to curl up in a ball and cry. The first time I experienced these pains was when I visited my mom. I was laying in her bed and out of no where here were these pains. I just recently had those same pains with my last cycle, which was only 3 days. I started the way I always do. The first day is always light brown discharge with some pink. The second day is usually darker pink almost red and then the 3rd is red with a heavier flow. This time, the first day was normal, but the second and 3rd day were light pinkish redish color. I dont usually have my period for only 3 days and it worried me so i took a test and it was negative. I have been on the pill for almost nine months now. Correctly. I was just wondering if someone could help me with any advice or anything similar!!! Thanks Clara Jo.

    • Beth May 28, 2012, 3:42 am

Well there are other things you can try to have, have you tried asking your doctor to give you Mefenamic acid tablets because I had the same problem as you and these really help but it’s advised you don’t take them if you are:
      taking asprin
have severe liver or kidney problems
      have sever heart failure
are in the final 3 months of pregnancy
      inflamation of your bowles

side effects can be things such as feeling tired or drowsyness.

I hope this helps you as much as the tablets helped me and I hope your pain goes away soon!

  • Taylor April 29, 2012, 10:16 pm

Hello, I’m eighteen years old and sexually active.
My periods are mainly on a normal cycle, however, I had sex (condom broke) a week or so before my period. My boyfriend and I noticed during sex that the condom broke so he didn’t release inside me. It’s been about two and a half weeks since my period was due. I’ve taken three pregnancy tests since then though and each on came out negative.
I’ve also had a lot going on at school and in my personal life, and also the condom scare.
Could my missed period be due to my emotions and head messing with me?
I’ve also had an increase in eating and fatigue.
    Please help.

  • Jessica April 29, 2012, 1:34 pm

    Can you help??
I am 17 years old an I recently had my first sex (unprotected) with my boyfriend and we used the pull out method. This happened a week ago.
I am an athlete who exercises A LOT and I stress a lot from school and grades. I havn’t had my period since maybe about 8 months. Is it possible to be pregnant with that long of a missed period??
I had a UTI the day after we had sex and now is gone and I experience a very slight pain in my lower abdomen, but I think is normal because my body is not used to it. I plan on doing a pregnancy test because I am afraid I am pregnant. Am I pregnant? I am afraid because I have a lot going for me to get scholarships and things and I need some help.
Please tell me ASAP and help me out. Thank You

And other time , I always “”pullout”” befor i even have the urdge to ejactuate, Then finish up Outside I guess to say, (this is really awkward Im sorry). Well its the 28th today and she hasnt had her thing, but she tells me not to be scared. I am, If it goes into the next month maybe, the 3rd of next month, does it still count? or are we in touble? If she misses one month, :/
please reply at Austin.Atchley@live.com thanks so much

So my boyfriend and I had sex two ish months ago and we used a condom and he pulled out right away. My period came two weeks late and then I got it again around the same time the next month. And now I am spotting brown which is normal for me at the end of my period. But ive not been on my period for about 2 weeks. I mean my period was pretty heavy and long… So i dont think i could be preggers. Should I be worried? because this spotting is weird.

I also have been quite stressed due to family issues….

  • Grace April 25, 2012, 2:09 am

Hi I’m Grace, I’m almost 18 years old and I had my first period at the age of 14 and since then I’ve been quite regular, having one consistently every month though the cycle may be longer or shorter than 28 days. About two months after I turned 16 it became very regular, 30 days + or – 2 days either side, that is up until this year. I had my last one on the 16th of December and have had no sign of anything since and it is now the 24th of April. Is this okay, or should I be worried? Thanks.

  • Ashley April 24, 2012, 8:53 pm

I stumbled upon this site while searching for the answers to my period questions.

I started my period around the time of my fourteenth birthday. For the first few years I’ve had my period at irregular dates, sometimes once a month, sometimes once every 3 months. And when I asked my mother about it, she told me it was normal to have an irregular cycle when you first start out.

But the thing is, I turn 17 this August and I still do not have a regular cycle. My period doesn’t come every month like most girls my age. It would skip months, or come just weeks apart. And this time I hadn’t had my period since New Years day, just starting my period today, is with d four months.

And it seems like, what I lack in monthly cycle, I make up with cramps. The first day is always the worst. Sometimes the pain in my back is so bad I feel like vomiting.

I’m a virgin, so I know when I miss a period it can’t be pregnancy, but what is it? Is it normal for some girls to be like this?

  • lisa April 24, 2012, 5:34 pm

I started my period about a year ago,and I was 14 years old. it started out prefectly fine, and then i didnt get it for like 6 months, and then i got it and it was just fine. Then at the beggining of school year (about 2 months later) i got it again and it was normal… but then a month later i got my period but it was only spotting… its been very irregular, like i would get it once every 2-3 months but it would be spotting only. I have NOT had any sex, i am super clean and still a virgin 🙂 But should i be concerned about this?
ps: i am a little over weight… does this affect it?

I also took a pregnancy test and it came out negative. My tummy is slightly puffy but i dont know if its anything to do with being pregnant or just something realating to eating. Also by the way all the times we had sex and he ejaculated we used protection.

Okay so im about to be 18 next month and I got my first period when I was 12 but it has never been regular this year I have only got my period once (March 19 2012). Last year I only got it 4 times (April 15, June 29, Oct 09, Dec 19) and I worry that maybe there’s something wrong or that it might cause me problems later in life when I try to get pregnant (I am not sexually active at this time). What do you recommend me to do?

  • MedStudent April 23, 2012, 1:04 pm

Hi, I’m 20 years old and I’m having an irregularity in my menstrual cycle from the past 3 months. My period is delayed by around 10 days (from past 3 months). I’m not sexually active, neither do I have any significant enough eating disorders. However, I’m a 2nd year Med student so there’s some amount of academic stress but I doubt that should be the cause of my problem because if it were, then it would’ve presented earlier. Note: I had primary amenorrhoea for which I was diagnosed with a microadenoma in my pituitary gland (which was causing very high serum prolactin levels) when I was 15 years old. I was on medication for about 4 years for the same, during which period I had normal cycles. Around 8 months ago I consulted my doctor who asked me to stop the medication for 6 months and see if my cycles remain normal without them, and if so then I shall continue to not have the medicine. Its been 8 months since I discontinued the medication, but from past 3 months I’m facing this problem of delayed (by 10 days) cycles. I’m very worried and stressed out about it. Is it normal for such delay in normal monthly menstrual cycles? Should I get a blood test done to check if my hyperprolactinemia has reoccured? Please help me figure this out. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Sincere thanks. 🙂

First time i have abortion in Feb 2011. but after abortion Dr. recommends for sex to become regular in periods but period don’t come in 28 days, then dr started it by doing surgery. on next month periods come time, mean after 28 days. then i did sex, used condom but next month no periods, i taken lab test, ultrasound etc but result was negative, i some time have headache and some uncertain feelings and weakness etc. shortly i have been 6 times operated in one year just for periods not being on time. now i am worried that its Dr that is doing some thing wrong or its my body. i do secure sex with condemns. last time i did sex during period with using condemn but after that whole month i never did sex but periods never started on time. dr again did surgical treatment and started bleeding. i still never did sex now its 2 months, periods not started and i am having weekness, headaches etc. dr says either do sex with life partner or get surgery. i can’t afford surgery as i have spent around $10,000 on doing same as Dr recommends but i am not being regular. even i did no sex for whole month or 2 but still every month this issue occurs and Dr charges lot of fee for surgical treatment. Today i did secure sex as Dr says it necessary else get surgical treatment. i am not sure periods will start or not but i am worried that if again surgical treatment then how i can live my life, getting each month this surgical process. i am in doubt that these are Drs those are just doing some thing wrong for their income. plz don’t mind if some one is Dr here but you can imagine how its hard to face same thing every month even test are negative. Plz if some one know some very solution that can start my periods without any sex requirement or surgical treatment. i shall be thank to you. Also plz let me know how i can 100% make sure that its permanency or some thing else?

  • Meagan March 20, 2012, 3:56 pm

Hi there, I’m 15 years old and I’ve had my period for 2 years and it has always been irregular as in I would get it every month but not on time. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex for only about 1 minute because I freaked out and he did not finish inside me, in the middle of last month, but I got my period a week later. We have had protected sex with a condom ever since and I was suppose to get my period 3-4 days ago and I have not received it yet… I have been stressing about it because I spotted after having sex with a condom this month, and I’ve been peeing more often then usual. And I know this because of some research I did, which probably did more bad than good. But should I be worried or should I take a pregnancy test or wait a couple more days?

Thank you, god bless your blog

  • bethany March 19, 2012, 2:56 pm

hi, um i’m 15 years old and im worried that i may be pregnant i’.m five days late, i don’t know if my period is irregular i had my period since i was 13 and i don’t know if it’s just acting up or i may be pregnant. i don’t have any symptoms but i’m really starting to worry should i just wait or ?

    • Jacky March 19, 2012, 7:25 pm

When was your last period? Do you remember when you had unprotected sex? You could go to a walk-in clinic and ask if they can give you a pregnancy test. They don’t charge but if you’re too shy you should buy one. I’m sure you don’t want to spend money but if you want to stop stressing about it just get one to be on the safe side.

  • Jacky March 19, 2012, 2:34 am

I’m Jacky and I’m 19 yrs old. I have had irregular periods since the beginning and I somewhat know how to keep track of it. I am kind of concerned right now. My boyfriend and I use protection. I’m not on birth control nor do I get the shot. Once we had intercourse w/out protection but I got off and we didn’t finish. I had my last period on Jan. 29th which lasted 7 days. I was supposed to get my period in the beginning of March but nothing. I went to a clinic and took a pregnancy test on Mar. 8th and it came out negative. On March 14th I got the 24 hour stomach flu (I’m not sure if this might have affected my cycle). I felt better the next two days eating light foods and had a vegan meal on the 16th but on March 17th my boyfriend and I went to eat some Spanish food and both of us got sick from our stomachs. I was nauseous and had to vomit but couldn’t and I’ve been constipated for quite a while! On the 18th I felt somewhat better but still a little sick. My period still hasn’t arrived and I’m getting frustrated. Earlier, when I used the bathroom, I wiped and noticed red blood mixed with discharge on the toilet paper. Is that a sign that I might be getting my period soon? I have been worried and kind of stressing. I have had no symptoms of pregnancy (from what I know) but I know everyone is different. I have the basic bloating, cramping (is kind of weird. I feel it all over my abdominal area not so much under the belly), acne (always have that problem), and soooomewhat mood swings (I sometimes have that). Am I pregnant, is there something wrong with me, or am I just over thinking it?? Please help!

    • Jacky April 30, 2012, 1:03 pm

Well I ended up getting my period on April 4th so turns out everything was fine. I also had taken 4 pregnancy tests and they all came out negative. Thank you all for your help -.-

  • Regular now irregular?! March 18, 2012, 6:26 pm

I would like to stay anonymous and I’m 19. I’ve had my period for about 5/6 years now, at first they were irregular but after a while they become pretty regular. I’ve always gotten painful cramps with my period so that isnt worrying me, though they have become more painful this time round. I’m just a little worried that there may be something seriously wrong as I’ve had my period 3 times in the last 7 to 9 weeks, the first time was as it normally is 6 days with regular amount of blood. I wouldn’t say heavy but not exactly light either.. the second one was a week later and lasted about 4 days and was lighter than usual, and this one the third was 2 weeks after the second, I am only 3 days in it was lighter than usual on the first day but the second third day have been heavier than usual. My period is normally slightly lighter at night also but the second night of this period I put in a tampon just before bed (8pm) and I woke up this morning (530am) and I had bleed through my nickers and my shorts. I am in a relationship and its really worrying my boyfriend as well, I have been pregnant before and have had 2 terminations both approximately a year ago (one in may and one in september of 2011). I am on the birth control pill, I have been since september 2011 and since I’ve been on there my periods have been irregular again, although they have always been consistent with the blood flow. Ive recently stoped taking the pill in the last 5 weeks.. could this have something to do with it?! Is there need to be worried?! I dont have the most nutritious diet either, would that be a factor.
Please Help, I hate worrying and worrying my man.

  • crystal March 16, 2012, 10:08 pm

Hi, I’m concerned about my 15 year old, she has always been irregular, and would always experience PMS symptoms, cramping, bloating, moodiness, etc. She was started on Beyaz for her irregular cycles when she was 14, this helped. However, when my Job was acquisitioned and I took a pay cut, I was not able to afford the Beyaz anymore for her. Her cycles were once again irregular. She has however missed her cycle for the last month and a half, She started with the cramping, and backache and cycle came for one day, then stopped again, she is very active in sports, dance, softball etc. She is adament that she is not sexually active. I feel she may have endimetriosis, as I did, as well as fibroid cysts, I recently have had to have a hysterectomy, because my symptoms had gotten so bad, and found out one of ovaries was full of endimetriotic cysts. My daughter’s doctor did not want to start testing her at the time she started the Beyaz because she felt she was still young. She was 14 at that time. Any suggestions you have will be helpful. Thanks.

I am 18 years old and i started my period when i was 12 years old. My period has been fine until now. My period was always irregular. I can never assume when ill start again the next month.I haven’t done it since end of December 2011. It’s been almost 3 months. I am not sexually active. I am healthy. I do not have any pains. Is it normal to skip for 3 months?

  • Lesley March 13, 2012, 7:34 pm

I got my period around the end of december, which stopped at the begginning of January. I skipped the whole month of February. It is now March 13th and I still haven’t gotten my period. Me and my boyfriend broke up recently in January, so I am not sure if the stress is causing/was causing my period to be delayed. I have never had sex, and am not on a pill. Should i be concerned? * By the way, i usually get my period at the end of the month/the middle.

    • DP Nguyen March 14, 2012, 12:22 pm

It might be the stress that is causing you to have your missed period. Try not to worry unless you miss your period three months in a row. In that case, I would go see your doctor. Good luck

  • Natalia March 13, 2012, 4:40 pm

Hiya I’m Natalia. I got my very 1st period at the age 16 about 6 months ago. It was very very heavy with large clots and lasted for 7 days. For the following 3 months I never got my period. For those 3 months, every 25ish days I had slight tan-light brownish discharge when I wiped but not even enough to wear a pantiliner for (no pink or red or dark brown). And that would last about 2 days. After those 3 months, I got my period again (2nd time). It was very heavy and crampy at first, and after I removed a tampon it basically stopped. The rest of that period lasted for about 7 days just like my first. It was basically on and off and very stringy and mucousy – not liquid at all really… (sorry if tmi). It has been 2 months since then and I have nothing still… I’m really confused :s I technically only had 2 periods in half a year

    • DP Nguyen March 14, 2012, 12:21 pm

      Hi Natalia,
If you just got your period six months ago, I wouldn’t worry. Your body is still trying to regulate hormones. It is absolutely normal to have irregular periods in the first few years after you start your period.

  • Lara March 12, 2012, 10:24 pm

Hi! I dont always have my period every month sometimes i dont get it until 4 month, and it always like that since the first time i had mine (which is when i was in 7th grade and now im in 11th) and since last year early december i dont get mine until now. Im not sexually active, i havent had sex or do something like that. Im kinda scared but its not possible right to get pregnant without having sex? Thanks

    • DP Nguyen March 12, 2012, 11:03 pm

      Hi Lara,

I would go see a doctor to figure out why you are having irregular periods. But, no you cannot get pregnant unless you have sex, or sexual activity. Try not to worry.

  • Abby March 11, 2012, 3:00 pm

So my period is about a week late. My boyfriend and I haven’t had sex but we have messed around. One time he ejaculated on my lower stomach. Could I be pregnant from that?

    • DP Nguyen March 11, 2012, 3:01 pm

      Hi Abby,

Nope, you cannot get pregnant if he just ejaculated on your lower stomach.

  • molly March 11, 2012, 1:11 pm

i got my last periods on 25 dec. on 14th jan i did’t sex but i diched my self by something or i got light bleed may b 2 drops now its 15 march i did’nt get periods m i pregnent…???

    • DP Nguyen March 11, 2012, 3:02 pm

No, I don’t think you are pregnant. But I would go see a gynecologist or doctor to figure out why you have NOT had your period in such a long time. Only a medical doctor can help you! Good luck.

  • Keri March 10, 2012, 5:09 pm

Hi, I’m 17 and sexually active with my boyrfriend, but we use condoms each time. I think it’s still too early to take a pregnancy test because my cycle is irregular and I have been stressed this month, but should I be concerned about the delay or possible absence of my PMS this month? I’ve always felt my breasts get sore and it hasn’t happened yet (my period is due around this time of the month).

    • DP Nguyen March 11, 2012, 3:03 pm

Sometimes PMS symptoms are different from month to month. You may have sore breasts one month, and the next month have horrible bloating.
I would take a home pregnancy test once you’ve missed your period to make sure you are not pregnant. Good luck.

  • Amy March 10, 2012, 10:36 am

i am 13 and i got my peirod last june(2011),i has it in july august novenber and december i got my last peirod at the start of december and havent got itsince then. i have recently had cramps in my tummy and i am starting to worry

    • DP Nguyen March 11, 2012, 3:04 pm

I wouldn’t worry about missed periods at age 13, since its common for girls your age to have irregular periods. It sometimes takes several years before your periods become more regular.

  • alexis March 8, 2012, 4:13 pm

Hey my names alexis. Im 16 years old. I had protected sex feb 15 then i had unprotected sex using the pull out method march 2. Im suppose to get my period on the first but i am reggularly a few days off normally. I still havent had my period. its march 8. i did also take next choice earlier in february if that helps at all. but ibtook a test yesterday and it was negative. my boyfriend also smokes weed and ive heard that makes there semen weak or something. can you please try to help me figure out whats going on and what i should do. thank you 🙂

    • DP Nguyen March 11, 2012, 3:19 pm

      Hi Alexis,

You need to take another home pregnancy test. Also, you should contact a doctor and get a blood pregnancy test. If you used the unprotected – pull out method – there is a chance that you could have conceived. Good luck.

  • Carly March 7, 2012, 4:52 pm

I am fifteen, and have a boyfriend. I am sexually active but I am on the pill and as well use a condom. I’m three days late for my period, I’m so paranoid. The condom didn’t break or anything! Please help.

    • DP Nguyen March 11, 2012, 3:20 pm

      Take a home pregnancy test.

Sometimes, you can take the pill but if you miss a dose, or don’t take the pill at the scheduled time, there is a chance that you could get pregnant. Same thing with the condom. It’s only 99 percent effective.

So take a home pregnancy test if you are worried. Good luck.

  • Maria March 6, 2012, 4:45 pm

I am a girl aged 20 and im not sexually active but ever since i moved to a new country my periods have been weird..I miss 1 month then the next month i go then the next i miss again and the days are not regular. i used to have heavy menstrual pains but now i dont anymore, is this something i should worry about or should i see a doctor.

    • DP Nguyen March 11, 2012, 3:23 pm

It might be the stress of moving to a new country. But I would go see a gynecologist, just to be on the safe side and to make sure that you don’t have anything else going on. Best of luck to you.

  • Rose March 4, 2012, 9:11 pm

Hi, I’m 17 years old and ever since school started for me on September 2011 I missed my period for two months and in November I got it and then I missed it again for 2 months and then it showed up in late December and ended on January 3rd. I’ve never missed my period for more than a month until now since school started. I was never sexually active. Is it something I should be worry about. I usually have it every month until this year.

    • DP Nguyen March 5, 2012, 4:31 pm

That is unusual for your periods to suddenly become irregular. I would go see a gynecologist to figure out what might be causing this irregularity.

  • Tella March 4, 2012, 7:33 pm

Hey, i had PROTECTED sex on the 25th of january and my period was the 26th. i went a month w/o intercourse and had PROTECTED sex again on the 22nd and 25th of february. My period was supposed to start on the 28th, but it hasn’t yet and I’m several days late. I haven’t had cramps or any symptoms. I don’t know what the problem could be .. HELP!!

    • DP Nguyen March 5, 2012, 4:32 pm

It is possible that your period may be delayed due to stress, illness, etc. Take a home pregnancy test if you are worried. I am sure that your period will arrive though.

  • kayla March 4, 2012, 6:45 pm

hi i am 12 years old and i stated my period 8 months ago. not un til last month i had 2 periods a month. that last 7 days. and currently this month on my period again even after my period ended 7 days ago. i am not sexually active. but i am worried about if this is normal… i often experience very painful cramps. i have disscussed this with my mom she thinks its normal considering its my first year. but i have read on websites that girls my age go on the pill because of ireggular periods. that last for 7-10 days that occur every 2 weeks… plz write back asap thnx.

    • DP Nguyen March 5, 2012, 4:34 pm

This is really normal at 12 years old. I agree with your mom, it is very normal at your age. Try not to worry about. Periods that last longer than 7 days (with heavy bleeding for over a week!) is a worry, but if you have 7 day periods, absolutely normal. Try not to worry~

  • Ellie March 3, 2012, 12:50 am

Hello I’m 19 yrs old and I have not had my period in 14 months, should I be worried? I have been sexually active for a yr.

    • DP Nguyen March 5, 2012, 4:40 pm

You need to take a home pregnancy test ASAP. You should also schedule an appointment with a doctor to figure out what’s going on.

  • Ellie March 3, 2012, 12:48 am

Hello I’m 19 yrs old, I have not had my period for a little over a yr should I be worried. I got married a yr ago, so I have been sexually active for a yr.

    • DP Nguyen March 5, 2012, 4:41 pm

You should definitely be worried if you have not had your period for a year. Please go see a gynecologist and figure out what’s causing you to have no periods.

    • DP Nguyen March 5, 2012, 4:47 pm

That is strange that you haven’t gotten your period. Are you under a lot of stress? Or have you been sick recently? That can sometimes throw your period off.

  • Vashy February 28, 2012, 5:05 pm

Hello, As you see, my name is Marisa.
I am 16 years old and I started getting my period at the age of twelve. Actually a few days before my birthday that year. I would skip anywhere between 2-4 months and my longest skip so far was about 6 and a half months. Is that normal?? My most recent period was in October of 2011. About four months ago. I also have practically no signs of my period when I get it and there is a lot of clotting. Should I go see a doctor?? Help please!

  • Star February 25, 2012, 7:30 am

Hi, my name’s Star and I’m 19. I started my period when I was 11 and for years have been very consistent. Over the last year my periods have become increasingly irregular (in duration, flow and time between periods). I am sexually active but we always use a condom with spermicide. In March of last year I used Plan B due to condom failure, it was effective and my period resumed but with the aforementioned irregularities. I’m a little overweight but still healthy, I eat a balanced diet but college has been putting a ton of stress on me. My last period started on December 15th 2011. I have taken two home pregnancy tests and both have been negative. I haven’t been experiencing any symptoms of pregnancy (all the women in my family have had really bad pregnancy symptoms). I’m really worried because I’m not ready to be pregnant or a mom, what should I do?

  • Leeya February 23, 2012, 6:23 am

So I’m 13 and it’s one year since I had my first period, I had it last year at february. I know it’s kinda common for teenage girls to have irregular periods, but I’m still scared that there might be some problems with me as I didn’t have it for one year. Like cancer or some kind of sickness…
    Please reply and help me.

  • Keira February 23, 2012, 6:07 am

I’m 13 and I my period started at February last year, it’s exactly one year’s time that I had my first period. I know it’s common for teenage girls

    • Keira February 23, 2012, 6:11 am

I’m so scared that I might have reproductive cancer or something

  • Monntrese February 22, 2012, 1:10 pm

I am 12 years old and the last time I had my period was in January, it comes at the same time. Every month. I don’t know what happened this month. I was suppose to have it on the 19 or 20. Should I be worried. I am a virgin.

    • DP Nguyen February 23, 2012, 12:09 am

No, I wouldn’t be worried at your age. Try not to stress.

  • Sara February 21, 2012, 4:48 pm

  • Ananya February 19, 2012, 11:27 am

I had protected sex with my boyfriend on 2nd Jan, 2012 and had my last periods on 17 Dec, 2011. After i had sex with my boyfriend in the month of jan i didnt get my periods. I am really worried. I am very sure i am not pregnant. I being an advertising professional have a bizarre life style, eating habit and i take a lot of stress but i want to know the actual reason behind the delay. Please help i need it badly.

    • Ananya February 19, 2012, 11:36 am

Awaiting your response on my matter

    • DP Nguyen February 19, 2012, 11:12 pm

Have you taken a home pregnancy test yet?

Sometimes, poor eating habits and stress can delay your period.

  • Abbey February 18, 2012, 8:42 pm

Hi my name is abbey and last month (January) I got my first period and it lasted from the tenth in the middle of the day to the 11th when I got home after school I am 12years old and I haven’t gotten it this month should I talk to my mom or doctor about this thanks

    • DP Nguyen February 18, 2012, 10:36 pm

Don’t worry. This is just your first period. Remember that it can take up to two years before your periods become regular – on schedule – month to month. At this point, it’s way too early and I am pretty sure that you’re fine and perfectly healthy.

  • Alexandria February 15, 2012, 10:29 am

Hi I’m 23 I’ve been on birth control for almost 7 years. When I first started my periods I was really irregular. Id get about 4 periods a year so I got on birth control to help regulate my cycle but just never got off of it. About a year ago I switch to a lower dosage pill. About 4 months ago my period came early which was weird because I am really good about taking my pill. A month later I got off the pill and used condoms just to see if perhaps I’d be able to regulate after all these year on my own …but 3 weeks later I got a period which I could have anticipated because I had just got off the pill. But the next few weeks I started really breaking out and my skin is always nice and clear so I got irritated and got back on my pill and now I’ve had 3 periods in a span of 2 and a half months. What’s wrong with me? The last question was my past period it started after a night I had just had sex went to the bathroom when I finished going PEE I noticed that their was a light pink tissue in the toilet is this bad or normal? Thanks for the help

    • DP Nguyen February 18, 2012, 10:47 pm

It doesn’t sound like anything is wrong with you, but your body’s reaction to going on and off the hormones. The light pink after sex could be due to physical trauma to your vagina during sex, an infection, polyps, any number of things. You may want to go see a doctor about that just to rule out anything more serious.

  • Fiona February 12, 2012, 2:49 pm

Hi, I wouldn’t do this but I am really worried:/ I am 14 and I started my period around march last year(2011) and it was pretty regular for a while but after summer my periods got more and more spaced out and now there has come a point when my last one started on December 1st 2011. I am really worried and I hope you can somewhat help me.

    • DP Nguyen February 18, 2012, 11:14 pm

As long as you have a period once a month, I wouldn’t worry about it. Most doctors won’t be diagnose you until you’ve missed your period for 2-3 months in a row. So try not to stress

  • Melissa February 12, 2012, 11:46 am

im almost 19. i had my first period when i was 11. yes my periods were irregular for the first couple of years, but then regulated. my last period was november 29, 2011. i usually go a little over a month before having a period, so i should’ve had one Jan 7, 2012 but i didnt. i am sexually active so my first thought was pregnancy, so i tested both blood and urine and both were negative so then i thought that maybe i just didnt ovulate. i shouldve had another one Feb 9 but again didnt, so again i thought pregnancy, but it again was negative. im getting really concerned. i have no clue what is going on. im not stressed, and not on any birth controls.

    • DP Nguyen February 18, 2012, 11:15 pm

I would go see your gynecologist to figure out what’s going on.

  • Christina February 10, 2012, 5:44 pm

I’m 19 years old, I have been on Birth Control for almost 2 years now. I normally always get my period when I am suppoused to. I would sometimes miss a pill but would take it right away as soon as i noticed, which was the next day after I was suppoused to take it. We were having unprotected sex and my cycle was perfectly normal. Me and my boyfriend were living together with his mom but I just recently moved back in with my mom and dad. The week of the January 25-Feb. 1 I got my period but that was a week early. The bleeding was light and would come on and off, that lasted about 5-6 days. Then on Monday the 6th we had unprotected sex, but I was still taking my pills like I am suppoused to. The week I was suppoused to get my period (Feb. 1-8) I didnt have any bleeding. Well now again on Feburary 10th it started again. I’m confused at what is going on. I thought about the possibility of my hormone levels being off, or i’m just stressed about school or being apart from my boyfriend right now, or the myth of how women in the same household vary their periods. I thought of that because the week before I started early was my moms week….Hoping for an answer so dont have to rack up the medical bills….Thanks!

  • jasmine February 9, 2012, 10:28 am

My 12 year old daughter had her first period in November 2010, then in January 2011, then March, May,July and August 2011.That was her last period. She didnt have any periods since then.Should I be concern? I asked if she had sex, she told me that she is 100% sure that she didnt. I want to have the trust of a mom and daughter and believe her, and I do believe her with all my heart . I have another daughter, whose periods are like almost 2.5-3 weeks out of a month, and this daughter seems to be the opposite. any suggestions? or may this be normal???Thanks! and ahve a great day!

  • Crissy February 8, 2012, 1:16 pm

Well, I’m 13 and my last period ended on December 23, I am not sexually active, but my friends are still telling me that I can still get pregnant without having sex!..Is this true?’

    • Crissy February 8, 2012, 1:45 pm

And I’m REALLY REALLY SCARED!!…And the sad thing is, when I told my mom that I’m not sexually active she didn’t believe me!….I’ve been just sitting In my room crying for about two hours now!’

      • Crissy February 8, 2012, 7:33 pm

        • Ashley April 24, 2012, 11:23 pm

          Re –

I’m pretty sure you can NOT get pregnant without having sex. Though there are ways that are very unlikely. (Oral sex, Anal Sex, Mutual Masturbation)

But if you’re only thirteen and haven’t had your period for more than 2-4 years, its okay to miss a period or two. From the way you describe situation with your mother, maybe stress at home or school is causing it?

  • Angel February 8, 2012, 8:14 am

  • Brett February 6, 2012, 11:09 pm

I haven’t had a period going on 5 months, and I know I am not pregnant, I haven’t even ever had a boyfriend. I am 16 years old and I am really starting to worry about it, but I don’t want to worry my mother because cancer and bad things like that run in my family. Should I really start to worry about this? I mean I can’t even remember the last time I was spotting? Someone please help put my mind to ease.

  • Jamie February 5, 2012, 9:15 pm

I am 15 and haven’t had sex, My last period was in Octobor, it is now Febuary and still haven’t got a vist from Aunt Flo. Why is this happening and should I go see a doctor?

    • DP Nguyen February 5, 2012, 9:21 pm

Has your periods always been regular? If it has, then yes, I would go see a doctor to figure out what’s going on. If your periods have been irregular, then I would not be so worried, since it can take several years from the time your period starts before it becomes more regular. But if you are nervous, then go see a gynecologist and see what he or she says.

  • Heather February 4, 2012, 11:25 pm

i missed my period but i havent had sex is that normal

    • DP Nguyen February 5, 2012, 9:34 pm

Stress and other facts can cause you to miss an occasional period. If you’ve missed your period two or three times in a row, then I would highly recommend that you go see a gynecologist.

  • Hayley February 4, 2012, 9:59 pm

Hi, my name is Hayley and im 15. Ive had my period for over 4 years and ive never missed a period. But I havent gotten my period in over a month! I know for sure I aint pregnant but is there something wrong? Things have been stressful but not too bad and ive been taking antibiotics for broncidis this past week but stopped a few days ago. Should I be worried?

    • DP Nguyen February 5, 2012, 9:34 pm

It might have been stress and illness that’s caused you to miss your period. If you miss your period again this month, I would make an appointment with your gynecologist to see what’s going on.

  • Caitlyn February 4, 2012, 9:47 am

Hi, my name is Caitlyn (as you can see above),
My guy and I were fooling around two weeks ago and we came close to actually having sex but I stopped him before he could go any further than sticking the head in…(blush). Anyways, there was no protection and he didn’t ejaculate. Yet, we believe there may have been a small amount of precut on the head. I wasn’t ovulating (I did 4 days before) an I’m still medically a virign (I still have my hymen), but we are both concerned about the possiblity of pregnancy. I missed my period three days ago but I’ve always been very irregular.
What are the chances I’m expecting a baby?

    • DP Nguyen February 5, 2012, 9:37 pm

I think the chance of pregnancy is low, unless the sperm in that precum was a fast swimmer. If you’ve always been irregular, then it’s possible that this is not pregnancy. But if you are worried, take a home pregnancy test.

  • rita February 3, 2012, 10:34 am

im 14 and my period is always late sometimes i miss my period for 3 or 4 months what should i do im afraid!! 🙁

    • DP Nguyen February 5, 2012, 9:39 pm

I really wouldn’t be too worried since you are only 14 right now. Your periods should even out in the next few years. If they don’t in a few years, go see a gynecologist.

  • lilita February 3, 2012, 10:27 am

hey i need your advice im 13 i’ll be 14 after 2 weeks and my period is not ok i always have a period in 1 month and 3 months i miss my period what do i have to do ??

    • DP Nguyen February 5, 2012, 9:40 pm

It’s normal for you to have irregular periods at 13. Try not to worry. Your periods will even out and become more regular in the next few years.

  • rahul February 3, 2012, 8:22 am

Hi mam i am rahul and last month me and my gf had a sex without any protection but i took out my sperm before i cum.and also she took i pill tablet for surety. She had a period twice last month.but this month her period is not yet happening..Is that because of her twice period last month .please help me ..

    • DP Nguyen February 5, 2012, 9:40 pm

If your girlfriend had her period after you had sex, then she is NOT pregnant.

  • daniela February 1, 2012, 2:58 pm

Hi! I’ll be 17 in 3 weeks. I’ve started daily sports(5days a week) in September and since then I only had my period once, in mid December, after my doctor gave me some pills. I eat healthy food (I used to eat a lot of chocolate and biscuits and no fruits, but now I stopped and have cereals, oat, yogurt, veggies, and fruits as daily basics). Still, I can’t go out. I feel full all the time and gets me really frustrated.

  • brittany February 1, 2012, 1:50 am

I started my period when I was 12 and I only get my period once a year is that bad?

  • Sarah B January 31, 2012, 6:14 pm

Im 16 and have had my period since I was about 10 it has always been irrelegular, a normal period for me is about 34-39 day cycles however the last time i got my period was December 19th, im 45 days late this is extremly late for me and im getting really worried. I know im not pregnant though because I havent had sex since September. I have been somewhat stressed tho due to midterms and a lot of other things recently, also I have very poor eating habbits. Im still not sure why my period is this late though. I havent even had any sypmtoms that my period is coming other than i broke out. Should I be worried or is this normal? Help!!

  • Tamara January 31, 2012, 4:30 pm

Hi, i started my period in november 2010, and i was 15 when i started. since then my periods were regular, but i havent seen them since late september 2011, any ideas why? and what might be wrong with me?

  • Nicole January 29, 2012, 9:48 pm

Hi … I’m Nicole and i’m 19, i’ve had my period for 5 years now but it’s always been really irregular (being late or missing months altogether). I was just wondering if it is normal for them to still be irregular after all this time or could something else be causing it like pcos ? I mentioned my irregular periods to my doctor but she said that she wouldn’t bother looking into them until i was trying to become pregnant … but what i’ve read on the internet suggests that if it is pcos that’s causing my irregular periods then leaving it untreated could prevent me from being able to have children later in life ? Should I be worried or am I just being paranoid ?

    • DP Nguyen January 30, 2012, 9:35 pm

It could be PCOS, so I would have it get checked out. If your doctor is unwilling to look into it, I would switch to a more sympathetic gynecologist who would be interested in diagnosing you. Definitely want to figure out what is causing your periods to be irregular. With PCOS and you are overweight or obese, sometimes losing weight can help make your period more regular. But get it checked out. Good luck.

  • Kiarra January 29, 2012, 9:10 pm

Hey, i’m 14 almost and I’ll be 15 in a few months. My periods have always been irregular. One month it would be on the 16th, the next month it would be on the 26th, then the next it would be on the 6th, then the 16th and on like that and I’ve had them since I was 13. I haven’t had a period in about two months, is this normal for my age? Is my body still getting adjusted to “maturing” or should i seriously be concerned? Because as of right now, I am.

    • Kiarra January 29, 2012, 9:12 pm

P.S. I’ve never done anything sexual

      • DP Nguyen January 30, 2012, 9:39 pm

This is normal for your age, and it’s just body getting used to all the hormones. It is completely normal. Try not to worry.

        • Kiarra January 30, 2012, 9:58 pm

Thank you so much, my friends have been telling me it could be something major. It’s a huge relief to know that this is normal.

  • hayley-jane January 29, 2012, 2:08 am

Hi, my name is hayley and I’ve just turned 16

I have really irregular periods and it probably started about december 2010 when I had my first period, after that my next one didn’t come for about 5 months, and then about the 3 months after that, my last one was in december 2011 and I still haven’t had one since, I turned 16 early january and now I’m not on a regular period its starting to worry me, I not very big chested and having a boyfriend its starting to worry me and make me very concious, we aren’t sexually active but I don’t know why my periods are so irregular. Please could you give me some advice on what might be the problem or what I could do to help, it would be much appreciated:) thanks x

    • DP Nguyen January 30, 2012, 9:47 pm

If your period only started in 2010, I wouldn’t be too worried at this point. It can take 2-3 years after your period starts before it becomes more regular. If you are still worried, you should contact a gynecologist and see what they think.

  • WorriedTeen13 January 28, 2012, 2:01 pm

    Hiii, im 13 years old.

My last period wuz in december 16 and ended on the 21st. It has been more than one full month. And my period hasnt started yet. Im very worried. I have never been sexually active i dont do any sports and im not stressed until now. What duz it mean??

  • Sydney January 27, 2012, 9:11 pm

Hello, I’m Sydney. I’m sixteen and I’ve had my period for around 4 years. The first two years I was very irregular, and even now that it has become mostly regular it tends to be 5-6 weeks apart. I expected my period about two and a half weeks ago, and it never came. But from about 5 days before I expected it, I started getting my PMS symptoms, which are mostly mood swings, headaches, and cramps. It’s been about 3 weeks and I am still having horrific cramps every day. There is no chance that I am pregnant, as I am still a virgin. I was in the doctor’s office this week for another complaint and told my doctor all of this, but she pretty much ignored it. She never even answered when I asked if it was normal. I’m wondering if I should keep waiting for it to come or to go and see a gynecologist? Is there a reasonable excuse for it acting like this?

    • DP Nguyen January 28, 2012, 1:26 pm

I would go switch doctors and go see a gynecologist who is more sympathetic and understanding of your questions. I would drop that other doctor – she doesn’t seem to be very reassuring. A good doctor should listen to your problems and symptoms and answer your questions.

  • Zainab January 26, 2012, 6:14 am

    • DP Nguyen January 28, 2012, 1:35 pm

Have you talked to your doctor about what’s going on, and your symptoms? I would highly recommend going to see a gynecologist.

  • Yasmin January 25, 2012, 12:56 pm

i had sex for the first time 4 weeks ago and my periods have been affected, last month (after sex) i came on my period for 1 day then stopped, after a week i came on my period properly for 7 days, any explanation for this? also my period is late by 2-3 days and im not pregnant i took two tests at the right time and both were negative, ive been stressed lately and i do a lot of excersize i dont know if that could have an impact?! but im really worried about it have you got any answers? x

    • DP Nguyen January 28, 2012, 1:41 pm

A late period by 2-3 days isn’t anything to worry about, and sometimes some women do spot before their periods.
If you are ever worried, contact your gynecologist and ask your questions. But it doesn’t sound like u have much to worry about.

  • elles January 24, 2012, 3:56 pm

hello again….. i commented on you blog before but you never responded…..kso i took a pregnancy test and when i took it it appeared negative…..then i put it away…then i checked it again like 20-45 minutes later and there was a thin faint line going through the other line….did i use the test wrong or am i actually pregnant?

    • DP Nguyen January 28, 2012, 1:53 pm

Hi, Sorry for not responding. I am realyl behind all of my comments, so I am trying to catch up.
I think that you should take another test, because if you got a faint line, then yes, there is a chance that you are pregnant. Take a test again, and schedule an appointment with your doctor for a blood pregnancy test. Good luck.

      • elles February 11, 2012, 3:44 pm

hii, after i took the pregnancy test, a few days later i got my period…so would that mean im not pregnant? or is it possible to have your period when you are pregnant??

        • DP Nguyen February 18, 2012, 11:16 pm

If you HAD your period, you are NOT pregnant.

  • ana January 23, 2012, 5:20 pm

  • Micaela January 21, 2012, 8:20 pm

I’m sexually active, but I’ve always used condoms correctly and pull out method or just condoms… But I’m supposed to be having my period… Should I be worried? Since I used condoms and they never broke, I should be okay, right?

  • angelina January 20, 2012, 3:03 am

    • Cinnehh January 20, 2012, 8:55 am

Re- Angelina, I think you shouldnt be worrying so much, because it happened to me before especially when i just got my period. So dont worry. Just wait.

  • Cinnehh January 15, 2012, 12:47 pm

If i werent sexually active since my last period and i still havent gotten my period for this month, is it normal? I have been experiencing irregular period since i first gotten my period. I had my first period when i just started 5th grade, so I guess i was about 10 years old. Before I became sexually active, I still have irregular period. I have just turned 15, I became sexually active since high school has just started not long ago. ( i was 14 at the time). I have been getting stressed a lot lately. the weekend before i suppose to have my period, I didnt get much sleep, I only had about 3-5 hours asleep per day. Furthermore, I was ill the week before. I had quite bad fever and have kept going to the bathroom about like 10+ times a day when I couldnt really eat because of my appetite .the week after being ill, I started getting some brown discharge and cramps(i am not sure if its cramping or not, because i dont know if i was fully recovered yet). I suppose to have my period on the 11th for this month, but i still havent gotten it. Is it normal to miss a period when you are not a virgin ? Cuz my mom said when you are not a virgin, you should get your period every month. I am quite worried. Please reply asap. thanks.

  • Brigid January 12, 2012, 11:51 pm

I hope you’re still responding to this post because I am so worried! I didn’t get my period until a month before my 15th birthday. I am about 5 months from turning 16. It started out being very light and brown, skipping a month here and there and only lasting 2-5 days. Now it is red and heavier (though still super light compared to my friends). I basically have to change my pad 2-3 times a day and I don’t have to wear a night pad all the time. I’ve also never worn a tampon. Anyway, now my period will stretch on for weeks. I’ve had it for 23 days before and I am currently on my 15th day. I eat a very healthy diet of mostly organic foods, low in white flour and sugar and I’ve been packing in the iron lately to try and replace what I’m losing through blood. I do have a well check in 4 days simply because I am due for one. I will be discussing this with my Dr. but I was hoping you could ease my worries until then. I know it’s normal to have an irregular period when you’re first starting out but is it dangerous for it to last this long? The longest I ever see in my friends is 10 days, but then, they are heavier bleeders than me. Please help!

Okay, so im 16 years old and I’m trying to figure out if i have premenstrual syndrome or if I’m pregnant. Okay so in November my boyfriend stuck his penis in me with no condom, but it was only in for like 10 seconds, no longer than that. But 2 weeks later in December I got my period. Now, that it’s January I think pms starts cause I’m about a week early. But then I’m worried that I could be pregnant. I don’t have have morning sickness, but I am like having trouble sleeping, bloating, really bad cramps, some muscle aches, breast tenderness, backaches, shoulder blade hurts, And I have been a little stressed and depressed and anxious lately. Is it just my period just being irregular or pms or pregnany? Please help me.

  • Daisy January 7, 2012, 12:12 pm

    Hi ,
My names Daisy and I started my period on Halloween 2011 (lol) and the next month it came on thanksgiving (it’s really ironic lol) so after that I expected it on Christmas, but it didn’t come at all in december! So I had a pastrami sandwich and it made me poo which is normal on my period but I’ve been have some back pains and EXTREMELY bad cramps in my stomach and the area where I usually get them when I’m about to menstruate. I also live with 3 other women (mom 2sisters ) and 2/3 of the start at the beginning of the month. So do you think I will get mine this month? And if so, when do you think? I am also 12 y old and a virgin, never ever did it. Please help.

  • Arianna January 6, 2012, 9:06 pm

Hi my name is arianna. I’ve had my period since I was 13 and I am 15now. I have never really had a normal flow, I usually get a really heavy flow every three months that lasts about 4days. This month I just started mine, this is going to sound really gross but today I felt something weird coming out of my vagina, so when I went to the bathroom to check my pad there was this cold stringy goopy thing. This hasn’t ever happened to me before so I’m not really sure if sometimes other things besides blood sometimes comes out when your menstruating. I’m just kind of freaked out, please help!

  • Sasha January 4, 2012, 11:05 pm

I had sex on the first day of my fertile period. He wore a condom and he didn’t come. My period is three days late but I feel exactly the same, I’m terrified to take a test. My friends tell me that my stressing over it is pushing my period back. They say it’s normal to be apprehensive after your first sexual experience. What should I do?

    • Sasha January 4, 2012, 11:31 pm

My name is sasha btw, I’m 18 and mycycle is never more than 30 days. This is the 31st

  • Pauline January 1, 2012, 3:28 pm

Im 17 years old. I’m a virgin. I started my period when i was ten or so. Im a regular, but sometimes i’ve been having 1-2 weeks late periods, but they are normal. My period lasts 8 days. My last period, I started it on december 20 2011, and its still going on today at january 1 2011, thats 13 days. Is it normal? Whats wrong with my body? Should i be worried? ASAP

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:19 pm

That is not normal for you to be having a period that lasts that long. I would recommend that you go see your doctor or gynecologist to figure out what’s causing you to bleed for so long. Sometimes heavy, long menstrual periods can be a sign of an infection in your uterus, a polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, thyroid problems… However, in some cases, it may just be stress, a change in your diet or exercise, or a change in birth control pills… I would recommend that you get it checked out by a doctor, since there is a chance that it may be serious. I don’t mean to scare you, but it is not normal to have 2 weeks of nonstop menstrual bleeding.

  • Cotton December 31, 2011, 8:05 pm

    Hello there!

Right now at he moment, I’m just one month away from being 15. I’m a virgin.
I had my first period when I was 13 for about a month, and since then it has been
three to four months between every period, except for once when there
Were 2 weeks inbetween. When I have my period it lasts for 6-7 days,
That is always the same. My periods never bother me much, only very light
    cramps if at all.
This rhythm has so far been normal for me, but ofcourse I know it isn’t very
Common, so I’m worried. Could you please advice me on what to do?

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:20 pm

If that’s been normal for you, I really wouldn’t worry. I think your periods will even out once you get older. In a few years, if your periods are not become more normal – i.e. you’re not having one period once a month – I would go get it checked out. But at your age, I wouldn’t be too worried.

  • belle December 31, 2011, 3:00 pm

Hi, im 14 yea i know im young and yes im sexually accive however we do use a condom EVERY TIME and my period is a week late and it has never been this late i always start around the 26 or 28 this is very unussual and scary for us both. I am very worried i may be pregnant because i have not been cramping or even feeling as if i may start my period soon please help.

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:21 pm

      Hi Belle,

If you are worried that you are pregnant, you should take a home pregnancy test. That’s the only way you can really know. Although condoms are very effective, they aren’t 100 percent. So buy a home pregnancy test and see. Good luck!

      • belle January 2, 2012, 1:12 am

Thanks i wouldnt be so worried im over a a week late though and im freaking out all i have done for the past week is cried and my parents and i have talked about it before and they said they would force me to get an abortion and i couldnt ever live with myself if that happened i really just dont know what to do…..im so worried… last night mystomach started hurting and the pain would increase if i pushed on my stomach and everytime i think i am cramping it goes away. i have no way of getting a test on my own and i cant tell my parents or anyone in my family anything. im terribly scared, upset, and regretting my descisions.

        • DP Nguyen January 2, 2012, 1:51 am

Sometimes stress can cause your period to be late. What about your boyfriend? Is there any way he can buy you a home pregnancy test? They also sell them at dollar stores, where a test is only $1. If you could get a friend to give you a ride to the store, and you can buy a test, that may help.

Remember that your parents can never force you to do anything. They can make your life hard, but you do have options. And if you are pregnant, there are different places that can offer you adoption services, if you decide to go that route.

Keep an eye out on your symptoms. Sometimes periods are just late. But if you used protection and the condom did not break, then I would not worry too much. Stress, bad eating can cause your period to be late though. Good luck! Hugs!

          • belle January 2, 2012, 2:43 am

Thank you so much, that was the exact rea assurance i needed 🙂 you are a life saver, i dont know what i would have done has i not stumbled across you blog <3

  • Holly December 30, 2011, 1:46 am

Hi, so I think I may be getting into a big big problem. I havent had my period for almost 5 years and I’m 16 yrs old. This is a really bad sign isn’t it? I didn’t know and then i asked someone and they say that it was normal and so i thought it was something that i shouldn’t have to worry, but now that i looked and read all these again and heard from one of my teachers that it’s not normal i’m begginning to worry again. It is too late for me to get into action and take care of myself? I’m scared and worried, is there anyway to help?

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:27 pm

      Hi Holly,

Try not to be too scared or worried. I do recommend that you go see a doctor though. If you are 16 years old, and you have NOT had your period for almost 5 years, then that does indicate that something may be wrong. It is NOT normal for you to start your period, and then for it to disappear all together. Please go see a gynecologist to figure out what is going on with your body.

      Good luck!

  • Rachel December 30, 2011, 12:30 am

ok so it looks like this website is mostly for teenagers but looks like this will be the best way to get an answer i have no insurance so i cant afford to go to the ob at this time. heres the situation im 24 years old have always had a regular cycle every 28 days since i was 10 well up til this year it became a lil irregular i completley missed my period i swore i was pregnant which i was not took several tests even had an ultradound well i got my period on september 9th and after that i was getting my period every 33 days up until this last month i was supposed to get my period on the 15th of december and did not until the 19th which would be 37 days with no cycle and then it only lasted about 2 or 3 days i dont think i have gained an excessive amount of weight have no thyroid problems or anything do you think this is normal ?

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:29 pm

Well, there are a lot of things that can throw our periods off whack. Stress is one of those things. I would not worry too much unless you start missing your periods 2 or 3 months in a row. Your menstrual cycle can range from 21 to 35 days and that is considered normal. However, doctors often look it into a missed period until you have missed a period for 3 months in a row. So, for right now, as long as you are having a period once a month, I wouldn’t be too worried. Good luck.

  • marcella December 29, 2011, 12:36 pm

Hello, I’m Marcella & I’m 14 yrs of age about to be 15 in feb. The last time I had my period was on October 15, 2011. And it Lasted for 5 days. But I haven’t gotten my period in November or this month. & I’m not sexually active. But i’m really worried that something could be wrong with my body.

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:35 pm

At your age, I wouldn’t be too worried. For a teenager, especially at 15, it’s common for your periods to be a little irregular. They should even out as you get older. If you are still worried, ask your mom to take you to see a gynecologist and ask. But I wouldn’t be too nervous. But that’s just my opinion.

  • Jocelyn December 28, 2011, 5:50 pm

Hi my name is Jocelyn & i’m 16,
Okay so i’m a bit worried because i haven’t had my period in 2 months. I took a home pregnancy test, and they were negative. Ive never had unprotected sex, my boyfriend always wears condoms. So I was wondering if i should be worried or is this normal? Also, my mom got me birth control pills.. Is it okay if I start taking the pills without having my period? Or should i just wait until it comes down?

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:42 pm

If you haven’t had your period in 2 months, I would go see a doctor to figure out what’s causing you to miss your periods. Don’t take the birth control pills until you talk to the gynecologist first. You should get checked out.

  • swati December 28, 2011, 5:15 am

My period is not on time as usual it never delay.
Why this happeng wid me ?
I took 3 tablts to delay period bcoj of my exams.
Bt its been more then 7 days.
    I am very tense ?
    Plz help.

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:46 pm

The medication you took to delay your period is probably what’s causing your periods to be late this month.

  • Laurel V. December 27, 2011, 11:27 pm

Im 13 almost 14 and when I first started it was light and normal. Then it stopped for four months and when it came back I had excessive bleeding with blood clots. I went to my doctor and she prescribed me Kariva. That helped and I became very regular. I have been taking it for 4-5 months and never miss a pill. I am not sexually active and I never have been. I did not start my period this month. I know I can not be pregnant but why have I not started. Should I be worried?

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:47 pm

Due to your age, I really wouldn’t be too worried. It wouldn’t hurt to call the doctor’s office, though, for their advice. Good luck.

  • Sharlene December 27, 2011, 2:56 am

Hi my name is sharlene and I’m only 13 years old and I just gotted my first period this year 2011 and I was always getting my period every month but after october Came thats when my period went away then I was scared crying all the time but after november 21 came thats when it showed again but I told my mom that my period nevered came in October and she was scared and now here it’s December and my period nevered showed again it was suppostoo come on Christmas day but it nevered please help me it always comes every two months and I don’t know why my period is not coming every month ! :'(

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:51 pm

      Hi Sharlene,
It’s normal for your periods to be irregular the first 2 years after your period starts. I really would not be too worried about having these missed periods. In about 2-3 years, your periods should become more regular. But right now, this is an absolutely normal experience. Try not to worry.

  • Nikii December 25, 2011, 12:47 pm

Hi, im 14 and my period started in year 5. recently me and my boyfriend have been fooling around, just 4 or 5 times and we have never actually had sex but we came reaaally close to it once and my periods late this month by 2 days, i know this isnt much but theres only 6 days left in this month and if i dont get it soon then il have missed my period this month. in september my period came around the 16th and the last two months its been on the 23rd but my period has never been in a regular pattern. please help could i be pregnt or am i just being paronoid?

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 9:55 pm

I think you may just be paranoid, but you should take a home pregnancy test if you are worried.

  • Katy December 23, 2011, 4:03 pm

    Hey I’m kat
I’m 15 years old and started my period at 13. I have always been irregular. It’s the end of December and my last period was in November. I had sex for the first time in november. I am very stressed if I could be pregnant, but I have no symptoms whatsoever. I feel perfectly fine. But very concerned if this is just an irregular period or me actually pregnant.
    Please help

    • DP Nguyen January 1, 2012, 10:02 pm

It could you just having an irregular period. However, if you are worried, take a home pregnancy test.

  • Lakisha December 22, 2011, 2:19 pm

I am 17 , my last period was mid October , I do have a irregular period , so I do skip a month of my period, but now that its December I haven’t came on yet. I took two prego test (negative). I also called my doctor , my doctor did tell me to take a prego test , just to make sure that wasn’t the reason I haven’t came on! I’m not prego! I have been stressing and depress that I haven’t come on ! Well I have just turned 17 , is it that my body is changing to cause this ? I’m really concerned , I don’t wanna wait til January to see my doctor .!

  • Ari December 21, 2011, 11:44 pm

Hi. im 15 years old, 16 in 3 months. i got my first period when i was about 12 1/2.My periods from then have been irregular. Like one month it comes on the 5th , next on 19th or whatever. They last up to 5 days. I think i missed up to 2 months before when i was like 13 . They have been regular sometimes but still irregular. i was wondering if this will stop soon since i had my period for 3 years already. Is it going to become regular and is this normal? & yeah i’m a virgin. Should i talk to a doctor about this or no? I’m not really stressful and i eat healthy. Am i pretty much done developing because i heard you only develop for 3 years during your period. Also is it normal to have white discharge everyday?

    • DP Nguyen December 21, 2011, 11:59 pm

If you miss your period three months in a row, I would worry. But I think you’re normal. Some women do not become regular until they hit their 20s. Anyway, I think this irregularity will become more regular as you get older. It doesn’t hurt going to see a doctor, if you are worried though.

  • Nicolle December 21, 2011, 1:24 am

    Hi my name is nicolle,
my last period was on october 1st and i havent gotten it since. i been gaining weight for some reason, however i been eating normal but nothing about pregnancy symptoms or pms symptoms. i also took 5 or 6 pregnancy test throughout this whole time and it came out negative. i dont know what to do.

    • DP Nguyen December 21, 2011, 11:03 pm

      Hi Nicolle,
Your symptoms might be concerning, especially the weight gain for no apparent cause. I highly recommend that you go see your doctor and get an examination to figure out why you’re missing your period, if there is an underlying medical condition that has caused your sudden weight gain. It might be nothing serious, but you should definitely get checked out. Good luck!

  • Nichole December 21, 2011, 12:55 am

    Hi, i’m Nichole.

I just had a baby five months ago. I am now having some period problems. I have had two periods since having her both being normal. After my last period, fourteen days before my next was supposed to start I had two drops of blood in my underwear and minor cramps. I started on the 19th of Nov and ended on the 23rd. I had the two drops of blood on the 6th. My period was supposed to come on the 17th of Dec. and I have cramps but my period hasnt came. I have not had sex since i saw the drops of blood. I have since taken two pregnancy tests. One two days before my expected period and one on the day of my expected period. Both were negative. EVERY time I had sex, condoms were used. Could I still be pregnant or could my periods be messed up after having a child?

    • DP Nguyen December 21, 2011, 11:05 pm

If you used condoms during sex, I highly doubt that you could be pregnant. The minor drops of blood and the minor cramps on day 14 before your period are probably signs of ovulation. Ovulation pain feels like cramps, and it can also come with light spotting. So those are normal signs of ovulation.

I wouldn’t be worried about one missed period, unless you are having other worrisome symptoms. If your period doesn’t come in January, go visit your doctor to figure out what’s going on. Good luck.

  • Kazzy December 20, 2011, 4:31 am

Hi, I’m 16 and I’m very worried about my period. I always experience having delayed period and i am sexually active. We always do protected sex, until last month, he decided to have anal sex without condoms. He didn’t come inside me, but he ejaculated at my stomach and i wiped it (by a towel) immediately. we then took a bath afterwards. but now, i am 4 days late on my period and i am very strssed about this right now. i have tender breast and mild cramps sometimes so i thought my period will come but up until now it hasn’t come yet. i am really worried and stressed. i get paranoid of getting pregnant. and I DONT WANT that to happen. do you think stress affects the delay of my period? I really need help. thanks.

    • DP Nguyen December 21, 2011, 11:07 pm

Stress does delay your period, so it’s possible that you’re just having a late period. Tender breasts, mild cramping are all normal PMS symptoms. Your period should come, but if it doesn’t, I would recommend that you take a home pregnancy test.

  • laira December 19, 2011, 3:14 am

hi!i’m 18 yrs old.last month i had my periods on 12th of october and i had it for 7 day as usual.my periods had started when i was 11 yrs old and since then they r regular.last month only i and my boyfriend had sex for the first time but i was quite sure that it was not properly done because i have heard that it pains a lot for the first time but there was no pain and i know that it was not fully inside which means that it was not done…but this month i had to have my periods around 12th only (like 11th or 13th) but i have missed my periods and the white discharge has also increased.so i want to know is everything normal or there are any chances of my pregnancy?

    • DP Nguyen December 21, 2011, 11:14 pm

If you missed your period and you have more vaginal discharge than normal, there is a chance of pregnancy. Go take a home pregnancy test and see if you are pregnant or not. Good luck.

  • Reba December 18, 2011, 9:09 am

Hi, I was just wondering about whether or not I should be worried about my period because of it coming 3 days late. I’m 12, and my regular time is on the 15 of every month. Basically, I has evened out to be at that time each month without fail. But, the fifteenth has come and gone… Should I be worried?

    • DP Nguyen December 21, 2011, 11:19 pm

I wouldn’t be worried about one missed period at the age of 12. It’s normal to have a late or missed period occasionally, especially in the beginning years of having a period.

  • Kate December 14, 2011, 8:18 pm

Hi, im 13 and ive had my periods for a year and ive had it 10 times in one year and it hasnt come this month, is this normal?

    • DP Nguyen December 14, 2011, 8:20 pm

At 13, I would not be worried about one missed period. For some girls, it takes up to 2 years after your period starts before your period is consistently regular. So don’t worry, Kate!

  • jackie December 14, 2011, 8:05 pm

    • DP Nguyen December 14, 2011, 8:09 pm

If you got your period, you are NOT pregnant.

      • jackie December 18, 2011, 5:34 pm

Oh okay thanks… but after i had got my period i didnt think i was pregnant so i told my aunt i got it and she said well yu still can be pregnant because when i was pregnant i had mine.. and my friend that was 14 had her period when she was pregnant.. so im still confused on this

        • DP Nguyen December 21, 2011, 11:15 pm

You cannot have your period and be pregnant at the same time. You can experience vaginal bleeding, or spotting, but that is not the same thing as a menstrual period.

    Hi Dr.,
My name is Isabel. I was supose to get my 11/20/11. I was going through a lot of problems with my baby’s daddy. So I completely forgot about not getting it and now I am freaking out. I still haven’t got my period and I feel bloated from my stomach. My breast don’t hurt or such thing. I had been sexual active with my baby’s daddy but we used the pull out method or condom. I am sure he never left it in, is there a chance I could be pregnant? I don’t know if it’s bc of all the stress and the changing of the environment and my poor eating habits?

      Hi Bella,

I’m not a medical doctor, but I write a lot about pregnancy and women’s health.
The pull-out method isn’t that effective at preventing pregnancy, since men can’t control precum and there is some semen in precum. So there is a possible chance that pregnancy is possible. It’s a low chance, but there’s a chance nevertheless. Stress, poor eating habits definitely can make your period late. So, I would highly recommend that you take a home pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant or not. Good luck!

Hi, I’m 17 and have had my period since i was about 10. My last one was the second week of Nov, which was a few days late. A few days after that i had sex for the first time. I’m not on birth control and my bf used a condom the 2 times we have done it. My period has always been the part of the last and first week of the month and it is the 12th, its never that late. i am really worried that i may be pregnant. Theres also a chance his precum could have gone inside me, can that cause pregnancy? But i know stress can affect my period as well, and a lot has been going on lately. One of my best friends died about 2 weeks ago which is around when i would have started my period and i’ve been worried about colleges. Because all of that going on i only just noticed i was late.
