Teen Menstrual Cycles: Why Missed Periods, Irregular Periods are Normal

Teen Menstrual Cycles: Why Missed Periods, Irregular Periods are NormalMissed Periods and Irregular Periods are Normal When You’re a Teenager!

Recently, there has been a flood of questions from my teen readers on my popular post, “Reasons for Missed Period – When You’re Not Pregnant.” I want to address the most commonly asked questions to alleviate any worries that teenagers may have about their periods.

Age of Your First Period

A teenager typically gets her first period between 12 and 14 years of age. Some girls can start menstruating as early as 9 years old. Others won’t have their first period until they’re 16 years of age. When you’ll have your first period depends on how fast you’re developing. Some girls are early bloomers; others bloom later. If you haven’t had your period by 16 years old, visit your doctor and find out what’s the hold up. In some cases, however, it may still be normal.

How Long Does a Period Last?

A regular period can last between three to seven days. During the teen years, you can bleed for even longer. Some teenagers have their period for 10 days! The length of your period can change from month to month. The heaviness and color of your flow will also change from the beginning of your period to the end. On Day 1, 2, and 3 of your period, it’s normal for your flow to be heavy. Your menstrual bleeding will become lighter and lighter until your period ends.

Irregular Menstrual Cycles and Missed Periods are Normal

In the first two years after you start menstruating (having your period), it’s normal for you to experience an irregular menstrual cycle. You may have a period twice in one month, or you may go without a period for two months at a time. Likewise, you may have your period for only 2 or 3 days one month, and the next time you have your period, it lasts for 7 days. This is normal during the teenage years. Your body is influenced by your growth (and puberty is a time of major growth), so this can change your menstrual cycle from month to month.

The length of time that your period lasts, and the amount of blood that you experience is influenced by the level of hormones that your body is manufacturing. Since a teenage girl is growing, her hormones are going to be fluctuating and this can change the amount of blood and the length of your period from one cycle to the next.

In a nutshell, missed periods and irregular periods are normal in the first two years after you start having your period. Your body will eventually develop a regular cycle. The average cycle length is 28 days, but not every woman follows this textbook rule. A regular menstrual cycle can run from 21 days to 35 days (or longer). If you’re a teenager, as long as you have one period every three months, you should be fine. But always call a doctor if you’re worried about anything.

*Very Important* – If you do not want to get pregnant, always use protection when you have sex. The only 100 percent way to protect yourself against STDs and pregnancy is to NOT HAVE SEX. Take it from an oldie – it’s always best to wait and save yourself for that special person.

When Should You Worry about a Missed or Irregular Period?

Missed periods and irregular periods can be normal in teenagers, but you should consult a doctor if you’re a teen and you haven’t had your period for at least three months. This may be a sign of a reproductive problem, like premature ovarian failure.

If you have at least one period within that three month range, you shouldn’t worry. This can be normal, just a byproduct of your fluctuating hormones. Your menstrual cycle will eventually even out, and you will get a normal cycle (although it may not be the perfect 28 day cycle.)

Reasons You May Miss Your Period When You’re Not Pregnant

If you are sexually active and you notice something unusual with your menstrual pattern, there is always a chance that you could be pregnant. Condoms are only 99 percent effective. Birth control pills are only effective if you take them on a regular basis. Skipping a pill can put you at risk for pregnancy.

Other reasons you may experience irregular periods, or missed periods, include excessive exercise, birth control pills, stress, and eating disorders.

Excessive Exercise - If you’re an athlete, you may notice a change in your menstrual cycle if you’re training super hard or exercising all the time. Excessive exercise can result in less bleeding, fewer periods a year, or your periods may stop completely. In most cases, your periods will return to normal within months after you stop participating in the strenuous sport.

If your period has stopped completely and it’s been over six months, you need to go see your doctor to rule out any medical problems.

Birth Control Pills – Sometimes, birth control pills are prescribed to help regulate your period. They can, however, cause you to experience a missed period. Hormonal methods of birth control, which contain the hormone progesterone, can cause you to miss your period.

Stress – Whether you’re in middle school or high school, schoolwork can really stress you out, especially if your parents are putting a lot of pressure on you to succeed. Stress is a normal part of life, but a ton of emotional stress can affect your period. Too much stress in your life may cause you to experience missed periods or irregular periods.

Eating Disorders – If you have an eating disorder, like anorexia or bulimia, they can slow down your bodily functions and cause your period to stop completely. Please contact a doctor or reach out to an adult if you have an eating disorder. You can also reach out to me, and I’ll be here to help you through this to the best of my ability.

PMS Symptoms Can Be Similar to Early Pregnancy Symptoms

If you’re a teenager who is sexually active, you must be aware that there is always a chance that you may be pregnant. A missed period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy. Please take a home pregnancy test, if you are ever worried. If you test negative at first, and your period still doesn’t come, take another test in about a week or so.

Always keep in mind, however, that premenstrual (PMS) symptoms can mimic early pregnancy symptoms. Even for the most experienced woman, it can be difficult to distinguish the two. For example, breast tenderness, fatigue, and food cravings are normal PMS symptoms, but they are also pregnancy symptoms. Nausea and vomiting can also affect you when you’re PMSing, and it’s an early pregnancy symptom. Taking a home pregnancy test is the only way for you to tell whether or not you’re pregnant.

I don’t think you are pregnant. I think it’s just your stress, and sometimes your cycles can be very finicky when you’re a teenager. So I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Hi I’m 16 and I haven’t had my period since maybe around the early teens in May. I’m normally irregular on my period but I’ve had protected sex on 6/14/2014. I’m not on birth control and I’m experiencing some brown streaky discharge and a jock itch. My mom knows about the itch and since I’m a lifeguard she thinks being in the water a lot is what’s causing the itch. But I’m not sure about the period thing. I’m worried. Please help

You might have a UTI or a vaginal infection of some kind. You should go see a doctor and get some antibiotics or creams to treat it.

Hello. I just turned 17 years old and I had my first period when I was 15, after that it was regular for about 3 months but then I got my next period only after a year and its been 5 months now and I still don’t get my period. So in 2 years I had my period only 4 times. I know thats normal to have an irregular period when you are a teenager but I am a little concerned about it. Should I be worried??

Hi,

So i am 17 years old and i barely get my periods. I am a virgin so i am not pregnant. I first got my periods when i was around 15 and they were never regular but i thught that was normal because i had just started. I am now 17 and i dont think i have had my periods in around 6 months maybe i never keep track, which is probably a bad thing. However before that i would only get them once every few months and they would only last 2 or 3 days. I am a vegetarian and have been one for around 4 years now so i dont now if it is juct a lack of iron but i dont think it is. I take iron supplements most days but i sometimes forget. I dont want to tell my mum becasue she doesnt like me being a vegetarian and she says if it affects my health she will make me eat meat and well i really dont want to. I have also had alot of stress with school and family and i moved country and stuff so i dont know if all of the stress could be causing my periods to stop and be so irregular. Please help!

I’m a 15 year-old virgin and I’ve always had a normal period. Recently in late March, I got my period and after it had finished, around April 9th or 10th, I started to get brown discharge/old blood. This has not stopped and its April 29th. I used a tampon for about 5 hours when I was on my last period and everything was fine. I was supposed to get my period about a week ago. I have no idea why I have abnormal discharge or old blood(not sure which) if I’ve never had sex. I don’t have any pain either. Please help!

16 DP Nguyen April 29, 2014 at 11:59 pm

Are you still having the brown discharge?

It’s normal to have brownish staining at the end of your period. For example, I will spot for a 1-2 days randomly after I think my period has ended. I will think my period has ended and then I get some brown discharge/old blood like you are describing for a day or two, and that is totally normal for me.

Reply

17 Isabella April 30, 2014 at 9:24 pm

Yes. I have had the brown discharge for over two weeks now, and the brown discharge did not start immediately after my last period. I finished my period late March and then the discharge started around April 9th-10th. I don’t have any pain and I’m a virgin so I’m not sure if I have an infection or something…

Reply

18 DP Nguyen May 11, 2014 at 10:47 pm

hmmm, are you on birth control? sometimes birth control can cause staining (like you’re describing). if you are worried, go to your doctor. he/she will be able to figure out what is causing your brown discharge. it may be related to your period or it could be something completely different.

I just started menstruating July of 2013 at the age of 17. For the first 3 months, I had a regular cycle, after that, I had no period for 4 months. I just found out I have polycystic ovaries. In January 2014, I got my period again. Then I skipped it for another month and then in March 19th of this year, I got another period that lasted 6 days. On April 3rd 2014, I am pretty sure I had breakthrough bleeding that lasted 6 days. I am not pregnant of sure so why did my period become irregular after it was regular in the beginning?

Reply

20 DP Nguyen April 22, 2014 at 9:16 pm

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a really common reason for missed period. So because you have polycystic ovaries, I am almost positive this is what is causing your period to be so irregular.

I don’t know what to tell my boyfriend either. I’m worried for what what it could mean as I still get the symptoms (cramps, emotional etc) but not the actual period. I get worried when my friends say how regular they are.. I lie to make them think im normal but I don’t tthink I am cause I’m not like everyone else :(

You might have a fertility problem or an ovulation problem. So I would go see your gynecologist to figure out why you aren’t having regular periods.

I am 15 years old, and on Sunday (2/2/14) me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex. He did not cum inside of me, he pulled out and the cum went everywhere. Some went by my vagina, but did not go inside. My period was supposed to start Saturday (2/8/14) . its been pretty much on time for the past few months, give or take a day. But it hasnt came yet. I am wondering if this is just a coincidence, because it has happened once before, I missed just about almost a whole month , and after that iw as back to having periods every month. I could really use some help, please

Hi,
Am I’ve just turned 18 years old. My periods have always been regular. Had unprotected sex mid October but he did not ejectulate as it was for 5 mins play but did not insert into me deeply. November had normal 5 day period and again in December on time. Have not had any sexual contact since October….just now have had 2 day heavy(normal period) and spotting on 3rd day? Could I be preganant? Am so worried :-((

Reply

25 DP Nguyen January 5, 2014 at 11:14 pm

No, you are not pregnant. If you had a regular period AFTER you had unprotected sex, then you are not pregnant. You had two days of heavy bleeding, and some light days, this is a normal period. However, it might just be a little different that you’re used to. But periods are like that. They fluctuate on the heaviness from month to month depending on your stress level and etc. So you are not pregnant. Try not to worry!

I’m not sure why your boobs are hurting so much. It might be a hormonal thing, lingering affects of your period. BUT if your boobs keep hurting and they do not stop, you need to go see a doctor to rule out that it’s not anything serious. But you are not pregnant!

I think you should be fine, if you are a virgin. Sometimes your menstrual cycles can be off when you’re a teenager, but you should tell your parents. They will understand. You may want to go see a doctor to figure out why you are missing your periods. Maybe you aren’t ovulating? Sorry I wish I could be more help.

And been really irregular! It’s just randomly one day!! I hate it, just when I am sitting in class.. There is no estimated time. Is not even monthly, it’s been like 2 months between, then 4 months and more!! So irregular it’s very annoying! I get that discharge like every day, and god awful pain in my stomach quite a bit. Not sure if the pain is period pain, but it hurts toooo much!! Please help, I am worried as hell!!

I’m 14 years old almost 15 and missed my period it’s only been 3 days but normally I get it a week early. I’ve been having my period since I was 11 years old. I’ve only had sex once and it was unprotected.. My boyfriend told me that I’m probably just late and that he didn’t cum inside of me, but can’t you get pregnant anyways? Even if he didn’t? I’m not even having signs of my period or anything. This is really not normal for me. I’m scared and I don’t know if I am or not.. And I don’t feel comfortable talking to my parents or family about this. Because I know I would be in a lot of trouble.. I don’t know what’s going on and I just need an answer from someone.

It means you are 17 years old and tempting fate. It doesn’t matter how much you love your boyfriend now, the last thing you want to do at 17 years old is have a baby. I am 23 years old raising my 2 year old niece because my 15 year old sister decided to have unprotected sex.luckily I had my life together enough to be able to take care of her.a word of advice save yourself now. Visit your local Planned Parenthood and find A discrete birth control. You have a lot of life of head of you. Be smart now while you still can.

But since 2010 I believe, I started getting it only twice a year & I’ve been like that since then. I don’t know what’s wrong i need you too Please help me when you have time.

Hmm, it’s not normal for you to only be getting a period once or twice a year. I would highly recommend going to see a gynecologist to try to figure out what’s going on. You may have an ovulation problem – your ovaries aren’t ovulating every month as they should. Perhaps it is PCOS or another health issue. But your doctor will give you clearer answers on what is causing your irregular periods.

Go see a doctor to figure out what is causing your missed period. Take a home pregnancy test if you are worried.

Hi, I’m 16 and have been sexually active for about 2 months. My periods have never been regular, they come every few months. But only having started being sexually active fairly recently, I’m kind of panicking this month. I DID get my period last month, but I have this nervous thing feeling like I should get it this month too? I don’t have a very good sleeping pattern or eating habits, I usually only eat like 2 meals a day. I think I’m dehydrated, and being close to exams week I am fairly stressed. We always use a condom, but having missed it I’m panicking thinking I’m pregnant. Is this probable? Is it more likely my eating habits/sleeping habits/ stress levels are having an effect on my cycle? Please help when you get the chance.

Hi, I’ve been having periods for over a year now and I’ve never missed one but they keep getting further and further apart. First difference was only 30 days and now it’s over 40. My mum has regular periods and says she never had anything like this. She did have something that made her periods heavy and painful though. I thought I would be a bit more like her and actually I get more scared there is something wrong with me each later period. Please help!¡!¡

Hi, I’ve had my period since i was 10 and I am currently 18. My periods have always been heavy but sometimes it is lighter then usual and sometimes it varies from being heavy for a months then light one month then back to heavy. Is this normal for my age? Is it possible for my cycle to still be somewhat irregular even though its been over 8 years? And also is it possible that being stressed can lighten the flow of a period?

I am not on birth control. I am sexually active for over 3 years and always use protection

Thanks so much.

Hi, I’m 17 and still abstinent. Never had sex at all. I haven’t had my period for a month now. I got my period when I was 13 and they have always been irregular but this is the first time that I missed one in about a few months. I know you can’t get pregnant from masturbation but I was wondering….. I don’t like talking to any body about these kinds of things but I need some advice… Is there a reason it’s doing this to me? Also i just started a tae kwon do class 2 – 3 months ago and I have had quite a bit of stress… But I’m still worried I could be pregnant or have something wrong with me…. Could you help me?

I’m 16. The last time I had sex with my boyfriend, we had sex with a condom then he went to the bathroom, peed and showered and then we had sex again, but without a condom for a little, but then he put another condom on and we finished. That was about 2 weeks before my period. Today my period is a week late (has not come yet). However, I started to have signs of my period coming about a week before my period was due. My breasts were just a little sore, but now they have become more sore and i do not know if i am just paranoid, but i think my nipples are a little darker. Five days before my period was due i took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Two days ago (5 days after my missed period) i took another pregnancy test and it was negative as well. My brests are sore. I am still having discharge as normal as usually do, i have no cravings ( but i did a week ago), and over the past two days ive had a pain on my right side near my hip bone. Are these signs that my period is coming? Also, I have never had regular 28 day cycles my period is always a little off. For about two weeks know i have been so stressed about thinking im pregnant that i have lost 10 pounds. Can that amount of stress lead to my late period? One last thing, I have struggled with anorexia for about 2 or 3 years now and the stress makes me sick to my stomach and gives me no appetite. Also, since my last period, i have become vegan. Can my lack of eating, new diet, and stress cause my period to be late? All of my pregnancy tests have proven to be negative and I have a pain in my right side sort of where my ovary would be i guess lol. Help in anyway that you can please.

Hi :) I am15 and recently I had my fasting month. My menstruation finished at the end of July around the 20th. After that for the whole month of August it did not come until the end maybe 27th or somewhere there. But the issue is that my period has not stopped UNTILL now! It came around the end of August and for some reason it was a heavy period unlike before and it slowed down until 2 days ago when only little spots would come and then the flow just increased again today but not as heavy just the normal. Oh and i started boxing training a day or two after my period started on the 27/8/2012 or so which requires heavy exercises and I do it 3 times a week for 2 or 3hrs with breaks ofcourse. Right now I am just freaking out wondering if I have cancer .. 0.0 PLEASE HELPPP ANd yup still a virgin . :)

Hi, I have a few questions

I am 21 years old and I recently lost my virginity to (now) my ex boyfriend. We hav had sex 3 times after that first time… ALWAYS using condoms. After my first time, my period was right on time, but the day after I finished my period, we had sex the second time. Before, during and after sex, we checked to see if the condom was still on properly (which it was) and he came inside me all 3 times (again) WITH the condom on. I have been taking cortisone pills for my excema. I have phoned my doctor and he said that my period would be delayed from the medicine…. Now my question is, would I be pregnant because my boyfriend came into me? (Btw, it was about 3 weeks ago the last time we had sex)

Please help, I’m stressing and it doesn’t help…
Thank you

Anyways, I’m 17 years old and I’ve been having every PMS symptom right now, but no period. My boyfriend and I have been using condoms with a spermicide and the time we had sex, it was the day immediately after my period ended. And, he never ejactulated. It’s been a month now and I’m normally pretty regular. The past week I’ve been soooo stressed about my body and dissecting every symptom I’ve been having. I’ve been at a music festival all outside (which I’m not used to) with extreme heat and I’ve been running around like mad all week. I’m 3 days late now. So what do you think? I need just a little more piece of mind.

I’ve recently started road running after a months break from exercise. Just need to have my mind put at rest for why my period may be running late.

Since about october/november every single period has been 32 days apart, and it was due four days ago. Im obviously a virgin so it cant be pregency but im just getting a little paranoid because they’ve always been so perfect and to schedule and eaasy to deal with. Is there anything wrong?

Hello, I am 14 and i started to have my period at the age of 11 and just to be clear I have not had sex at all. I have had a normal period for about 2 years but then on October 31st of last year i stopped having my period and haven’t had it since. I went through a phase where i was trying to eat healthy but went over extreme. I lost about 25 pounds and weighed 104 pounds. I went to my doctor and she told me that i was anorexic and need to gain more weight. That was in January and in the Febuary i gained back all my weight and have maintained a healthy weight of 125-128 pounds. Now it is July and i still haven’t had my period. Its almost been 9 months and i don’t know what is wrong. Did i damage myself? Please help me.

Hello, DP Nguyen, I am 13, 14 in August, and I’ve had my period since I was 11 and a half (3 months before I turned 12), which is the same time when my mother first started hers, except in July and I started mine for the first time in May. But this is not the problem. I haven’t really kept track of my periods but I’ve usually had them when my mother gets them (which she says is normal). But last month I had mine a couple days later than my mothers. Just letting you know about my cycle. But this month, my mother started her period and I didn’t start mine, and she’s done already. She looked it up because I was worried and said this is normal and that I’m going through a hormone surge or something like that. But here is the reason why I’m concerned, and it is a little embarrassing to tell you but I have to tell someone.
Well, I wanted to see what sex felt like so I put a hotdog up my vagina, not too far, but it was in there. And I HIGHLY doubt it could get me pregnant, but for a few days last week, I had nausea and extreme hunger (the hunger is probably because I was going through a growth spurt) but I’m still a little worried that the hotdog could have gotten me pregnant. I’ve been a little bulged in my stomach, but that is probably because I will get ready to start my period… hopefully. And when I was nauseas and hungry, I kept thinking I was pregnant (yes, from the hotdog) and I was really stressed and worried and I cried alot because I didn’t want to be. But now I feel VERY stupid for thinking that because I’ve looked it up and it appears to be just a normal teen thing, your cycle can sometimes vary. But I’m still worried about that hotdog. Can you PLEASE help me?
Oh, and I am a virgin. I’m sorry for this long comment, but I just have to pour out to someone.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that my breasts are growing at the moment, and they hurt when I squeeze them, but are not tender to the touch like they are when you are pregnant, as I hear. When I push in on my nipples it hurts, but that has always been like that. But the areola on my right breast is VERY large, more than I remember it (although I don’t really look at my breasts THAT often), and my left nipple seems to be more open. Just some more details I forgot to leave out! I am hoping you can help me with all of this.

Hey, I’m young, probably too young for sex but I’ve done 3 times already. Ever since I lost my virginity (about 2 months ago) my periods have been 17 days apart. I wasnt worried about it the first time but its the second month it’s happened. Theres about a 90% that I’m not pregnant so I’m not concered about it too much but I am worried about and STD or something. Can you tell me whats up?

Hi. this is extremely urgent so i would appreciate a prompt reply:

So, i`m 14 and got my period when i was 12. I turn 15 in september this year. And although my periods have never been completely regular, i`m finding my current situation to be way more severe. The last time i had my period was january this year and even that was much lighter than usual. since then i have had very little spotting and almost now indication of a period since April. I am 100% sure i am not pregnant as i have not participated in any sexual activity at any point in my life. Weight loss, however, could be a possibility but i am not entirely convinced. I did lose something like 3 kilos (from 60 down to 56.5kg) but i doubt that is enough to make a difference. I consulted my sister who is studying medicine and is in her third year. That was at the beginning of April and at that point she said not worry as her periods were very irregular when she was my age, too. But since then i have been extremely preoccupied and have not had time to seriously think about it until now. PLEASE, PLEASE reply because i am in serious stress mode right now and am living thousands of miles away from my family on exchange and so am feeling extremely vulnerable. Thanks.

Hi, I’m Kathryn, my period has been acting up this month, its been brown with a bit of red
and has been appearing all scattered in the month, as in it appears for about 3 days, then is gone for a week, and appears as this brown discharge again for say 2 days. This has never happened before, and is freaking me out! Also, on the days I don’t have my period it sometimes feels as though I’m leaking, but then it’s not blood. Please help! Any and all advice appreciated!! Thank you

Hey!
I got my first period when I was 14. Then it didnt come until 6 months later. Now my period is 9 months late. I last had it in September. I’ve just done my GCSE’s so could it be to do with stress because I’m not sexually active.

Birth control injections stop you from ovulating, so you will NOT have your period on them. But I do not think that you should be having back pain. I would talk to your doctor about your back pain and see what’s going on. Good luck

Yes,i have exprerienced it before,my first time i had unprotected sex,i was scared because i thought i was pregnant, although no sperm went inside me, all the stress can lead you to the symptoms of pregnancy,i took a test 3 weeks later & the results came back negative. We had sex again 3 more times after our first time,he always ends up releasing the sprem when he’s no longer penetrating me. Our 3rd time the condom broke and we stopped right away (again did not finish inside me) but my period is 23 days late,i have breast soreness and cramps like im gonna get my period but i dont, backaches are also there randomly,i dont know whats going on,i dont think im pregnant am i ?

I have irregular periods.. it can go from 2-3 months. I started experiencing this right after I gain weight from having my first child. Since I’ve gained weight, my period change. I started my period 2 weeks ago. First few days was dark and little. Its not enough for a regular pad. Well, this week its heavy. I’m getting blobs of bloods. Some are dark and some are really red. I was told not to drink cold water.. with this hot weather who can resist cold water. Well, since then I’m getting clumps of chunks. Could this be the cold drinks I’m drinking?I’m still on my period right now but really red. I felt a chunk and and sat in the toilet ..I check and wipe myself .. and again I can feel the warm blood flow. What can I do? I’m scared! :( help me.

I am as of today two weeks late. The week prior to when i was supposed to get my period i had all the usual symptoms: tender breasts, cramps in my ovaries, excessive thirst and hunger as well as headaches (this is all routine everytime i get my period). This lasted a little longer than usual continuing for about 3 days after i was due. As i said i am two weeks late. I am a bit concerned as to why that may be and if i need to consult my GP?

Ok so I’ve missed four months of my period. The first one I did take a home pregnancy test and it was negative the middle of the second I went and saw a doctor, he said that I wasn’t pregnant and I needed birth control. And even though I’m eighteen my parents don’t want me to take birth control cause they still don’t know about my activities. And i havent felt stressed at all. Today I just hit my periods after four months and I’m in so much pain and I’m bleeding ALOT! Is it normal for my body to do that? Is it like making up for the last four months? I would like to a least know what might be going on…

Hi, My boyfriend and I have never had sex, but we do do other things. I knoe its rare to get pregnant from other things, but that it can happen. His semen has never touched my vagina, and i make sure to either not have him touch it or wash his hands with soap right after. I was supposed to get my period on the 9th, as it has been around there for 2 months, but it was in the 20′s for 5 months before that (its always slightly irregular). Nothing is really different other than bloating and i feel as though my nipples have changed colour but I might just be psyching myself out. I took a test yesterday and it came out negative. I also have been under a lot of family related stress recently, what are the chances I am pregnant?

It would really suck if i am because i was supposed to start my birthcontrol this month and with all the family issues going on it’s something we really don’t need to deal with..

If you teen has irregular periods she could also have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome!

My periods were irregular from day 1, and I can’t tell you how many doctors told my mom “she’s young, it’s normal.”
Well it wasn’t normal. Once I finally found a doctor who knew what was going on my life changed big time. With treatment my periods became regular, and my other symptoms improved too. PCOS is one of the biggest causes of infertility, it also puts women at increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Catching it early does matter because treatment can reduce the risk of those things.
At least check with your child’s doctor if she has irregular periods in additon to any of these:
- rapid weight gain
- hair growth on her face, neck, or chest
- prolonged periods (mine were 2 weeks long…not joking!)
- dark skin on her inner thights, armpits, or especially her neck (there is a noticable difference with any race or skin tone)
- severe acne

Hi Everyone

My name is Cori and I have a question?

My period was late and I took 3 tests and all came back Negative.
Well about 4 days later I had a very terrible cramp and when I went to the bathroom I was bleeding heavily.

Well my period only lasted 3 days and it was heavy all the way through and had clots in it. Me and boyfriend have had sex and every time we do use a condom I never go with out it! I know that condoms are only 99% accurate but its better safe then sorry.

I was wondering if I am pregnant because my period was late and only lasted 3 days, also keep in mind it was heavy and looked like a real period.

Should I be worried?

If someone can help me I would appreciate it, its kinda hard to talk to anyone when you live with only guys all your life….

Hello, I am 19 this year. I havent got my period since my last one that was on the 8th of March. This is the first time in my lifee that I’ve missed period for so long. I’m quite sexual active, so I took quite a lot of home pregnancy tests.(all diff brands) and they are all negative. Last week I finally went to consult a doc, he didnt do pregnancy test on me because I told him I’ve done it myself and they are all negative, so he gave me Noresthisterone 5mg to induce my period. What I’m afraid now is, the med will give me false hope. I scared my period still won’t come after taking them. By the way, I do suffer cramps and I my body is kinda heaty. I’m really scared.

I’ve been regular for about five months now. I’m 18. Never had sex, but me and my boyfriend have done other things. Completely with clothes on, always being careful to never get it near me. Usually I start a day earlier than I did the last time. March I started on the 13th, then the 12th of april, and now I’m supposed to start the 11th of May, but so far I’m a day late, possibly two I’m hoping it will start today. My boobs hurt just like they always do before I’m going to start, but nothing has happened. I always freak out a lot, but we’ve never had sex so I can’t be pregnant. I’m not sure if I should be concerned or not. What should I do? I told my mom and she said I could just be late, and that its normal, but I still freak out a lot. It’d be great to hear back. Thanks!

Can I be pregnant? We did on my 22nd day of my cycle. He didn’t ejaculate inside and he pulled out within 2 minutes. It’s my 33rd day and I’m not on my period yet. I’m pretty sleepless lately, I usually turn in around 4AM. Is this hormonal?

Hi. I’m 19 and just had a quick question. My period was always regular until I was 17, where it became irregular, sometimes not appearing for months at a time. When I consulted a doctor she put me on a medication to help regulate my menstrual cycle, and once it did, I was taken off it. Occasionally, I may skip a month or so, but at the moment (last 2 cycles) me period seems to last at least 15 days, if not more. Is this normal?

Have you taken a home pregnancy test yet? Anytime that you have sex, you put yourself at risk for getting pregnant. remember that condoms are not always 100 percent effective.. .

Hi, I’ve had my period for more than 2 weeks and I’m 13, they are also really heavy through out. Should I go to the doctor or not, I get my period every month and sometimes even twice a month and this month I have got them twice. People say it’s normal but I’m not sure.

Hi DP Nguyen,
This might be a really stupid question but still I’ve been having my periods since I was 10 I’ve never had backpains before just stomach cramps that stopped or weren’t as painful as before when I turned 15. Now I’m 18 and just two days before my periods I’ve had backpains is it natural?
There is another question u’ve said that periods are irregular during the first two years one of my friends had periods when she was around 13 or 14 but her periods are still irregular she gets them after 1 and a half months and they last for about 10days just wanted to know if this was normal?
Im really sorry for taking up your time and I’ll greatly appreciate a response from you.
Thank you.

I was okay when my periods would change on different patterns every month, but never have I experienced going without a period for a whole month. School is ending for me, I don’t have to worry about homework to get stressed about it. I keep thinking my period will suprise me by starting one of these days. When I think I started, I didn’t. So far it’s been 1 month and 3 days. I am not sexually active, I’m just curious why it hasn’t started. Could you please help me find my answer?

My name is Clara Jo,
I am 20 and I usually have my period for atleast 4 or 5 days and this month I was only on for 3 days. I have had some extreme cramps where I just want to curl up in a ball and cry. The first time I experienced these pains was when I visited my mom. I was laying in her bed and out of no where here were these pains. I just recently had those same pains with my last cycle, which was only 3 days. I started the way I always do. The first day is always light brown discharge with some pink. The second day is usually darker pink almost red and then the 3rd is red with a heavier flow. This time, the first day was normal, but the second and 3rd day were light pinkish redish color. I dont usually have my period for only 3 days and it worried me so i took a test and it was negative. I have been on the pill for almost nine months now. Correctly. I was just wondering if someone could help me with any advice or anything similar!!! Thanks Clara Jo.

Well there are other things you can try to have, have you tried asking your doctor to give you Mefenamic acid tablets because I had the same problem as you and these really help but it’s advised you don’t take them if you are:
taking asprin
have severe liver or kidney problems
have sever heart failure
are in the final 3 months of pregnancy
inflamation of your bowles

side effects can be things such as feeling tired or drowsyness.

I hope this helps you as much as the tablets helped me and I hope your pain goes away soon!

Hello, I’m eighteen years old and sexually active.
My periods are mainly on a normal cycle, however, I had sex (condom broke) a week or so before my period. My boyfriend and I noticed during sex that the condom broke so he didn’t release inside me. It’s been about two and a half weeks since my period was due. I’ve taken three pregnancy tests since then though and each on came out negative.
I’ve also had a lot going on at school and in my personal life, and also the condom scare.
Could my missed period be due to my emotions and head messing with me?
I’ve also had an increase in eating and fatigue.
Please help.

Can you help??
I am 17 years old an I recently had my first sex (unprotected) with my boyfriend and we used the pull out method. This happened a week ago.
I am an athlete who exercises A LOT and I stress a lot from school and grades. I havn’t had my period since maybe about 8 months. Is it possible to be pregnant with that long of a missed period??
I had a UTI the day after we had sex and now is gone and I experience a very slight pain in my lower abdomen, but I think is normal because my body is not used to it. I plan on doing a pregnancy test because I am afraid I am pregnant. Am I pregnant? I am afraid because I have a lot going for me to get scholarships and things and I need some help.
Please tell me ASAP and help me out. Thank You

And now I am spotting brown which is normal for me at the end of my period. But ive not been on my period for about 2 weeks. I mean my period was pretty heavy and long… So i dont think i could be preggers. Should I be worried? because this spotting is weird.

About two months after I turned 16 it became very regular, 30 days + or – 2 days either side, that is up until this year. I had my last one on the 16th of December and have had no sign of anything since and it is now the 24th of April. Is this okay, or should I be worried? Thanks.

Hello,

I stumbled upon this site while searching for the answers to my period questions.

I started my period around the time of my fourteenth birthday. For the first few years I’ve had my period at irregular dates, sometimes once a month, sometimes once every 3 months. And when I asked my mother about it, she told me it was normal to have an irregular cycle when you first start out.

But the thing is, I turn 17 this August and I still do not have a regular cycle. My period doesn’t come every month like most girls my age. It would skip months, or come just weeks apart. And this time I hadn’t had my period since New Years day, just starting my period today, is with d four months.

And it seems like, what I lack in monthly cycle, I make up with cramps. The first day is always the worst. Sometimes the pain in my back is so bad I feel like vomiting.

I’m a virgin, so I know when I miss a period it can’t be pregnancy, but what is it? Is it normal for some girls to be like this?

Hi
I started my period about a year ago,and I was 14 years old. it started out prefectly fine, and then i didnt get it for like 6 months, and then i got it and it was just fine. Then at the beggining of school year (about 2 months later) i got it again and it was normal… but then a month later i got my period but it was only spotting… its been very irregular, like i would get it once every 2-3 months but it would be spotting only. I have NOT had any sex, i am super clean and still a virgin :) But should i be concerned about this?
ps: i am a little over weight… does this affect it?

Last year I only got it 4 times (April 15, June 29, Oct 09, Dec 19) and I worry that maybe there’s something wrong or that it might cause me problems later in life when I try to get pregnant (I am not sexually active at this time). What do you recommend me to do?

Hi, I’m 20 years old and I’m having an irregularity in my menstrual cycle from the past 3 months. My period is delayed by around 10 days (from past 3 months). I’m not sexually active, neither do I have any significant enough eating disorders. However, I’m a 2nd year Med student so there’s some amount of academic stress but I doubt that should be the cause of my problem because if it were, then it would’ve presented earlier. Note: I had primary amenorrhoea for which I was diagnosed with a microadenoma in my pituitary gland (which was causing very high serum prolactin levels) when I was 15 years old. I was on medication for about 4 years for the same, during which period I had normal cycles. Around 8 months ago I consulted my doctor who asked me to stop the medication for 6 months and see if my cycles remain normal without them, and if so then I shall continue to not have the medicine. Its been 8 months since I discontinued the medication, but from past 3 months I’m facing this problem of delayed (by 10 days) cycles. I’m very worried and stressed out about it. Is it normal for such delay in normal monthly menstrual cycles? Should I get a blood test done to check if my hyperprolactinemia has reoccured? Please help me figure this out. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Sincere thanks. :)

Hi
First time i have abortion in Feb 2011. but after abortion Dr. recommends for sex to become regular in periods but period don’t come in 28 days, then dr started it by doing surgery. on next month periods come time, mean after 28 days. then i did sex, used condom but next month no periods, i taken lab test, ultrasound etc but result was negative, i some time have headache and some uncertain feelings and weakness etc. shortly i have been 6 times operated in one year just for periods not being on time. now i am worried that its Dr that is doing some thing wrong or its my body. i do secure sex with condemns. last time i did sex during period with using condemn but after that whole month i never did sex but periods never started on time. dr again did surgical treatment and started bleeding. i still never did sex now its 2 months, periods not started and i am having weekness, headaches etc. dr says either do sex with life partner or get surgery. i can’t afford surgery as i have spent around $10,000 on doing same as Dr recommends but i am not being regular. even i did no sex for whole month or 2 but still every month this issue occurs and Dr charges lot of fee for surgical treatment. Today i did secure sex as Dr says it necessary else get surgical treatment. i am not sure periods will start or not but i am worried that if again surgical treatment then how i can live my life, getting each month this surgical process. i am in doubt that these are Drs those are just doing some thing wrong for their income. plz don’t mind if some one is Dr here but you can imagine how its hard to face same thing every month even test are negative. Plz if some one know some very solution that can start my periods without any sex requirement or surgical treatment. i shall be thank to you. Also plz let me know how i can 100% make sure that its permanency or some thing else?

I’m 25, my cycle have been regular- 28days until february. Last month I had my period no the 19th-24th. I had sex with my boyfriend 3 days, 14th-16th. Few minutes after we had sex on the 16th morning I experienced severe pains in my lower abdomen. We both thought it was pms. But it’s 32 days now and i’v not had my period this month. Is there a problem?

Hi there, I’m 15 years old and I’ve had my period for 2 years and it has always been irregular as in I would get it every month but not on time. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex for only about 1 minute because I freaked out and he did not finish inside me, in the middle of last month, but I got my period a week later. We have had protected sex with a condom ever since and I was suppose to get my period 3-4 days ago and I have not received it yet… I have been stressing about it because I spotted after having sex with a condom this month, and I’ve been peeing more often then usual. And I know this because of some research I did, which probably did more bad than good. But should I be worried or should I take a pregnancy test or wait a couple more days?

Thank you, god bless your blog

When was your last period? Do you remember when you had unprotected sex? You could go to a walk-in clinic and ask if they can give you a pregnancy test. They don’t charge but if you’re too shy you should buy one. I’m sure you don’t want to spend money but if you want to stop stressing about it just get one to be on the safe side.

Hi,

I’m Jacky and I’m 19 yrs old. I have had irregular periods since the beginning and I somewhat know how to keep track of it. I am kind of concerned right now. My boyfriend and I use protection. I’m not on birth control nor do I get the shot. Once we had intercourse w/out protection but I got off and we didn’t finish. I had my last period on Jan. 29th which lasted 7 days. I was supposed to get my period in the beginning of March but nothing. I went to a clinic and took a pregnancy test on Mar. 8th and it came out negative. On March 14th I got the 24 hour stomach flu (I’m not sure if this might have affected my cycle). I felt better the next two days eating light foods and had a vegan meal on the 16th but on March 17th my boyfriend and I went to eat some Spanish food and both of us got sick from our stomachs. I was nauseous and had to vomit but couldn’t and I’ve been constipated for quite a while! On the 18th I felt somewhat better but still a little sick. My period still hasn’t arrived and I’m getting frustrated. Earlier, when I used the bathroom, I wiped and noticed red blood mixed with discharge on the toilet paper. Is that a sign that I might be getting my period soon? I have been worried and kind of stressing. I have had no symptoms of pregnancy (from what I know) but I know everyone is different. I have the basic bloating, cramping (is kind of weird. I feel it all over my abdominal area not so much under the belly), acne (always have that problem), and soooomewhat mood swings (I sometimes have that). Am I pregnant, is there something wrong with me, or am I just over thinking it?? Please help!

264 Regular now irregular?! March 18, 2012 at 6:26 pm

Hiya,
I would like to stay anonymous and I’m 19. I’ve had my period for about 5/6 years now, at first they were irregular but after a while they become pretty regular. I’ve always gotten painful cramps with my period so that isnt worrying me, though they have become more painful this time round. I’m just a little worried that there may be something seriously wrong as I’ve had my period 3 times in the last 7 to 9 weeks, the first time was as it normally is 6 days with regular amount of blood. I wouldn’t say heavy but not exactly light either.. the second one was a week later and lasted about 4 days and was lighter than usual, and this one the third was 2 weeks after the second, I am only 3 days in it was lighter than usual on the first day but the second third day have been heavier than usual. My period is normally slightly lighter at night also but the second night of this period I put in a tampon just before bed (8pm) and I woke up this morning (530am) and I had bleed through my nickers and my shorts. I am in a relationship and its really worrying my boyfriend as well, I have been pregnant before and have had 2 terminations both approximately a year ago (one in may and one in september of 2011). I am on the birth control pill, I have been since september 2011 and since I’ve been on there my periods have been irregular again, although they have always been consistent with the blood flow. Ive recently stoped taking the pill in the last 5 weeks.. could this have something to do with it?! Is there need to be worried?! I dont have the most nutritious diet either, would that be a factor.
Please Help, I hate worrying and worrying my man.

Hi, I’m concerned about my 15 year old, she has always been irregular, and would always experience PMS symptoms, cramping, bloating, moodiness, etc. She was started on Beyaz for her irregular cycles when she was 14, this helped. However, when my Job was acquisitioned and I took a pay cut, I was not able to afford the Beyaz anymore for her. Her cycles were once again irregular. She has however missed her cycle for the last month and a half, She started with the cramping, and backache and cycle came for one day, then stopped again, she is very active in sports, dance, softball etc. She is adament that she is not sexually active. I feel she may have endimetriosis, as I did, as well as fibroid cysts, I recently have had to have a hysterectomy, because my symptoms had gotten so bad, and found out one of ovaries was full of endimetriotic cysts. My daughter’s doctor did not want to start testing her at the time she started the Beyaz because she felt she was still young. She was 14 at that time. Any suggestions you have will be helpful. Thanks.

Me and my boyfriend broke up recently in January, so I am not sure if the stress is causing/was causing my period to be delayed. I have never had sex, and am not on a pill. Should i be concerned? * By the way, i usually get my period at the end of the month/the middle.

Hiya I’m Natalia. I got my very 1st period at the age 16 about 6 months ago. It was very very heavy with large clots and lasted for 7 days. For the following 3 months I never got my period. For those 3 months, every 25ish days I had slight tan-light brownish discharge when I wiped but not even enough to wear a pantiliner for (no pink or red or dark brown). And that would last about 2 days. After those 3 months, I got my period again (2nd time). It was very heavy and crampy at first, and after I removed a tampon it basically stopped. The rest of that period lasted for about 7 days just like my first. It was basically on and off and very stringy and mucousy – not liquid at all really… (sorry if tmi). It has been 2 months since then and I have nothing still… I’m really confused :s I technically only had 2 periods in half a year

Hi Natalia,
If you just got your period six months ago, I wouldn’t worry. Your body is still trying to regulate hormones. It is absolutely normal to have irregular periods in the first few years after you start your period.

Hi, I’m 17 and sexually active with my boyrfriend, but we use condoms each time. I think it’s still too early to take a pregnancy test because my cycle is irregular and I have been stressed this month, but should I be concerned about the delay or possible absence of my PMS this month? I’ve always felt my breasts get sore and it hasn’t happened yet (my period is due around this time of the month).

Reply

284 DP Nguyen March 11, 2012 at 3:03 pm

Sometimes PMS symptoms are different from month to month. You may have sore breasts one month, and the next month have horrible bloating.
I would take a home pregnancy test once you’ve missed your period to make sure you are not pregnant. Good luck.

You need to take another home pregnancy test. Also, you should contact a doctor and get a blood pregnancy test. If you used the unprotected – pull out method – there is a chance that you could have conceived. Good luck.

Take a home pregnancy test.

Sometimes, you can take the pill but if you miss a dose, or don’t take the pill at the scheduled time, there is a chance that you could get pregnant. Same thing with the condom. It’s only 99 percent effective.

So take a home pregnancy test if you are worried. Good luck.

Over the last year my periods have become increasingly irregular (in duration, flow and time between periods). I am sexually active but we always use a condom with spermicide. In March of last year I used Plan B due to condom failure, it was effective and my period resumed but with the aforementioned irregularities. I’m a little overweight but still healthy, I eat a balanced diet but college has been putting a ton of stress on me. My last period started on December 15th 2011. I have taken two home pregnancy tests and both have been negative. I haven’t been experiencing any symptoms of pregnancy (all the women in my family have had really bad pregnancy symptoms). I’m really worried because I’m not ready to be pregnant or a mom, what should I do?

Have you taken a home pregnancy test yet?

Sometimes, poor eating habits and stress can delay your period.

Don’t worry. This is just your first period. Remember that it can take up to two years before your periods become regular – on schedule – month to month. At this point, it’s way too early and I am pretty sure that you’re fine and perfectly healthy.

Hi I’m 23 I’ve been on birth control for almost 7 years. When I first started my periods I was really irregular. Id get about 4 periods a year so I got on birth control to help regulate my cycle but just never got off of it. About a year ago I switch to a lower dosage pill. About 4 months ago my period came early which was weird because I am really good about taking my pill. A month later I got off the pill and used condoms just to see if perhaps I’d be able to regulate after all these year on my own …but 3 weeks later I got a period which I could have anticipated because I had just got off the pill. But the next few weeks I started really breaking out and my skin is always nice and clear so I got irritated and got back on my pill and now I’ve had 3 periods in a span of 2 and a half months. What’s wrong with me? The last question was my past period it started after a night I had just had sex went to the bathroom when I finished going PEE I noticed that their was a light pink tissue in the toilet is this bad or normal? Thanks for the help

Reply

327 DP Nguyen February 18, 2012 at 10:47 pm

It doesn’t sound like anything is wrong with you, but your body’s reaction to going on and off the hormones. The light pink after sex could be due to physical trauma to your vagina during sex, an infection, polyps, any number of things. You may want to go see a doctor about that just to rule out anything more serious.

As long as you have a period once a month, I wouldn’t worry about it. Most doctors won’t be diagnose you until you’ve missed your period for 2-3 months in a row. So try not to stress

im almost 19. i had my first period when i was 11. yes my periods were irregular for the first couple of years, but then regulated. my last period was november 29, 2011. i usually go a little over a month before having a period, so i should’ve had one Jan 7, 2012 but i didnt. i am sexually active so my first thought was pregnancy, so i tested both blood and urine and both were negative so then i thought that maybe i just didnt ovulate. i shouldve had another one Feb 9 but again didnt, so again i thought pregnancy, but it again was negative. im getting really concerned. i have no clue what is going on. im not stressed, and not on any birth controls.

I’m 19 years old, I have been on Birth Control for almost 2 years now. I normally always get my period when I am suppoused to. I would sometimes miss a pill but would take it right away as soon as i noticed, which was the next day after I was suppoused to take it. We were having unprotected sex and my cycle was perfectly normal. Me and my boyfriend were living together with his mom but I just recently moved back in with my mom and dad. The week of the January 25-Feb. 1 I got my period but that was a week early. The bleeding was light and would come on and off, that lasted about 5-6 days. Then on Monday the 6th we had unprotected sex, but I was still taking my pills like I am suppoused to. The week I was suppoused to get my period (Feb. 1-8) I didnt have any bleeding. Well now again on Feburary 10th it started again. I’m confused at what is going on. I thought about the possibility of my hormone levels being off, or i’m just stressed about school or being apart from my boyfriend right now, or the myth of how women in the same household vary their periods. I thought of that because the week before I started early was my moms week….Hoping for an answer so dont have to rack up the medical bills….Thanks!

I asked if she had sex, she told me that she is 100% sure that she didnt. I want to have the trust of a mom and daughter and believe her, and I do believe her with all my heart . I have another daughter, whose periods are like almost 2.5-3 weeks out of a month, and this daughter seems to be the opposite. any suggestions? or may this be normal???Thanks! and ahve a great day!

Re –

I’m pretty sure you can NOT get pregnant without having sex. Though there are ways that are very unlikely. (Oral sex, Anal Sex, Mutual Masturbation)

But if you’re only thirteen and haven’t had your period for more than 2-4 years, its okay to miss a period or two. From the way you describe situation with your mother, maybe stress at home or school is causing it?

Has your periods always been regular? If it has, then yes, I would go see a doctor to figure out what’s going on. If your periods have been irregular, then I would not be so worried, since it can take several years from the time your period starts before it becomes more regular. But if you are nervous, then go see a gynecologist and see what he or she says.

My guy and I were fooling around two weeks ago and we came close to actually having sex but I stopped him before he could go any further than sticking the head in…(blush). Anyways, there was no protection and he didn’t ejaculate. Yet, we believe there may have been a small amount of precut on the head. I wasn’t ovulating (I did 4 days before) an I’m still medically a virign (I still have my hymen), but we are both concerned about the possiblity of pregnancy. I missed my period three days ago but I’ve always been very irregular.
What are the chances I’m expecting a baby?

I think the chance of pregnancy is low, unless the sperm in that precum was a fast swimmer. If you’ve always been irregular, then it’s possible that this is not pregnancy. But if you are worried, take a home pregnancy test.

I was just wondering if it is normal for them to still be irregular after all this time or could something else be causing it like pcos ? I mentioned my irregular periods to my doctor but she said that she wouldn’t bother looking into them until i was trying to become pregnant … but what i’ve read on the internet suggests that if it is pcos that’s causing my irregular periods then leaving it untreated could prevent me from being able to have children later in life ? Should I be worried or am I just being paranoid ?

Reply

362 DP Nguyen January 30, 2012 at 9:35 pm

It could be PCOS, so I would have it get checked out. If your doctor is unwilling to look into it, I would switch to a more sympathetic gynecologist who would be interested in diagnosing you. Definitely want to figure out what is causing your periods to be irregular. With PCOS and you are overweight or obese, sometimes losing weight can help make your period more regular. But get it checked out. Good luck.

Hello, I’m Sydney. I’m sixteen and I’ve had my period for around 4 years. The first two years I was very irregular, and even now that it has become mostly regular it tends to be 5-6 weeks apart. I expected my period about two and a half weeks ago, and it never came. But from about 5 days before I expected it, I started getting my PMS symptoms, which are mostly mood swings, headaches, and cramps. It’s been about 3 weeks and I am still having horrific cramps every day. There is no chance that I am pregnant, as I am still a virgin. I was in the doctor’s office this week for another complaint and told my doctor all of this, but she pretty much ignored it. She never even answered when I asked if it was normal. I’m wondering if I should keep waiting for it to come or to go and see a gynecologist? Is there a reasonable excuse for it acting like this?

I would go switch doctors and go see a gynecologist who is more sympathetic and understanding of your questions. I would drop that other doctor – she doesn’t seem to be very reassuring. A good doctor should listen to your problems and symptoms and answer your questions.

If you are ever worried, contact your gynecologist and ask your questions. But it doesn’t sound like u have much to worry about.

I had my first period when i just started 5th grade, so I guess i was about 10 years old. Before I became sexually active, I still have irregular period. I have just turned 15, I became sexually active since high school has just started not long ago. ( i was 14 at the time). I have been getting stressed a lot lately. the weekend before i suppose to have my period, I didnt get much sleep, I only had about 3-5 hours asleep per day. Furthermore, I was ill the week before. I had quite bad fever and have kept going to the bathroom about like 10+ times a day when I couldnt really eat because of my appetite .the week after being ill, I started getting some brown discharge and cramps(i am not sure if its cramping or not, because i dont know if i was fully recovered yet). I suppose to have my period on the 11th for this month, but i still havent gotten it. Is it normal to miss a period when you are not a virgin ? Cuz my mom said when you are not a virgin, you should get your period every month. I am quite worried. Please reply asap. thanks.

I hope you’re still responding to this post because I am so worried! I didn’t get my period until a month before my 15th birthday. I am about 5 months from turning 16. It started out being very light and brown, skipping a month here and there and only lasting 2-5 days. Now it is red and heavier (though still super light compared to my friends). I basically have to change my pad 2-3 times a day and I don’t have to wear a night pad all the time. I’ve also never worn a tampon. Anyway, now my period will stretch on for weeks. I’ve had it for 23 days before and I am currently on my 15th day. I eat a very healthy diet of mostly organic foods, low in white flour and sugar and I’ve been packing in the iron lately to try and replace what I’m losing through blood. I do have a well check in 4 days simply because I am due for one. I will be discussing this with my Dr. but I was hoping you could ease my worries until then. I know it’s normal to have an irregular period when you’re first starting out but is it dangerous for it to last this long? The longest I ever see in my friends is 10 days, but then, they are heavier bleeders than me. Please help!

I don’t have have morning sickness, but I am like having trouble sleeping, bloating, really bad cramps, some muscle aches, breast tenderness, backaches, shoulder blade hurts, And I have been a little stressed and depressed and anxious lately. Hi ,
My names Daisy and I started my period on Halloween 2011 (lol) and the next month it came on thanksgiving (it’s really ironic lol) so after that I expected it on Christmas, but it didn’t come at all in december! So I had a pastrami sandwich and it made me poo which is normal on my period but I’ve been have some back pains and EXTREMELY bad cramps in my stomach and the area where I usually get them when I’m about to menstruate. I also live with 3 other women (mom 2sisters ) and 2/3 of the start at the beginning of the month. So do you think I will get mine this month? And if so, when do you think? I am also 12 y old and a virgin, never ever did it. Please help.

Hi my name is arianna. I’ve had my period since I was 13 and I am 15now. I have never really had a normal flow, I usually get a really heavy flow every three months that lasts about 4days. This month I just started mine, this is going to sound really gross but today I felt something weird coming out of my vagina, so when I went to the bathroom to check my pad there was this cold stringy goopy thing. This hasn’t ever happened to me before so I’m not really sure if sometimes other things besides blood sometimes comes out when your menstruating. I’m just kind of freaked out, please help!

I had sex on the first day of my fertile period. He wore a condom and he didn’t come. My period is three days late but I feel exactly the same, I’m terrified to take a test. My friends tell me that my stressing over it is pushing my period back. They say it’s normal to be apprehensive after your first sexual experience. What should I do?

That is not normal for you to be having a period that lasts that long. I would recommend that you go see your doctor or gynecologist to figure out what’s causing you to bleed for so long. Sometimes heavy, long menstrual periods can be a sign of an infection in your uterus, a polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, thyroid problems… However, in some cases, it may just be stress, a change in your diet or exercise, or a change in birth control pills… I would recommend that you get it checked out by a doctor, since there is a chance that it may be serious. I don’t mean to scare you, but it is not normal to have 2 weeks of nonstop menstrual bleeding.

Hello there!

Right now at he moment, I’m just one month away from being 15. I’m a virgin.
I had my first period when I was 13 for about a month, and since then it has been
three to four months between every period, except for once when there
Were 2 weeks inbetween. When I have my period it lasts for 6-7 days,
That is always the same. My periods never bother me much, only very light
cramps if at all.
This rhythm has so far been normal for me, but ofcourse I know it isn’t very
Common, so I’m worried. Could you please advice me on what to do?

If that’s been normal for you, I really wouldn’t worry. I think your periods will even out once you get older. In a few years, if your periods are not become more normal – i.e. you’re not having one period once a month – I would go get it checked out. But at your age, I wouldn’t be too worried.

Hi Belle,

If you are worried that you are pregnant, you should take a home pregnancy test. That’s the only way you can really know. Although condoms are very effective, they aren’t 100 percent. So buy a home pregnancy test and see. Good luck!

Sometimes stress can cause your period to be late. What about your boyfriend? Is there any way he can buy you a home pregnancy test? They also sell them at dollar stores, where a test is only $1. If you could get a friend to give you a ride to the store, and you can buy a test, that may help.

Remember that your parents can never force you to do anything. They can make your life hard, but you do have options. And if you are pregnant, there are different places that can offer you adoption services, if you decide to go that route.

Keep an eye out on your symptoms. Sometimes periods are just late. But if you used protection and the condom did not break, then I would not worry too much. Stress, bad eating can cause your period to be late though. Good luck! Hugs!

Hi, so I think I may be getting into a big big problem. I havent had my period for almost 5 years and I’m 16 yrs old. This is a really bad sign isn’t it? I didn’t know and then i asked someone and they say that it was normal and so i thought it was something that i shouldn’t have to worry, but now that i looked and read all these again and heard from one of my teachers that it’s not normal i’m begginning to worry again. It is too late for me to get into action and take care of myself? I’m scared and worried, is there anyway to help?

Hi Holly,

Try not to be too scared or worried. I do recommend that you go see a doctor though. If you are 16 years old, and you have NOT had your period for almost 5 years, then that does indicate that something may be wrong. It is NOT normal for you to start your period, and then for it to disappear all together. Please go see a gynecologist to figure out what is going on with your body.

Good luck!

Well, there are a lot of things that can throw our periods off whack. Stress is one of those things. I would not worry too much unless you start missing your periods 2 or 3 months in a row. Your menstrual cycle can range from 21 to 35 days and that is considered normal. However, doctors often look it into a missed period until you have missed a period for 3 months in a row. So, for right now, as long as you are having a period once a month, I wouldn’t be too worried. Good luck.

At your age, I wouldn’t be too worried. For a teenager, especially at 15, it’s common for your periods to be a little irregular. They should even out as you get older. If you are still worried, ask your mom to take you to see a gynecologist and ask. But I wouldn’t be too nervous. But that’s just my opinion.

Hi Sharlene,
It’s normal for your periods to be irregular the first 2 years after your period starts. I really would not be too worried about having these missed periods. In about 2-3 years, your periods should become more regular. But right now, this is an absolutely normal experience. Try not to worry.

Your symptoms might be concerning, especially the weight gain for no apparent cause. I just had a baby five months ago. I am now having some period problems. I have had two periods since having her both being normal. After my last period, fourteen days before my next was supposed to start I had two drops of blood in my underwear and minor cramps. I started on the 19th of Nov and ended on the 23rd. I had the two drops of blood on the 6th. My period was supposed to come on the 17th of Dec. and I have cramps but my period hasnt came. I have not had sex since i saw the drops of blood. I have since taken two pregnancy tests. One two days before my expected period and one on the day of my expected period. Both were negative. EVERY time I had sex, condoms were used. Could I still be pregnant or could my periods be messed up after having a child?

Reply

434 DP Nguyen December 21, 2011 at 11:05 pm

If you used condoms during sex, I highly doubt that you could be pregnant. The minor drops of blood and the minor cramps on day 14 before your period are probably signs of ovulation. Ovulation pain feels like cramps, and it can also come with light spotting. So those are normal signs of ovulation.

I wouldn’t be worried about one missed period, unless you are having other worrisome symptoms. If your period doesn’t come in January, go visit your doctor to figure out what’s going on. Good luck.

Stress does delay your period, so it’s possible that you’re just having a late period. Tender breasts, mild cramping are all normal PMS symptoms. Your period should come, but if it doesn’t, I would recommend that you take a home pregnancy test.

You cannot have your period and be pregnant at the same time. You can experience vaginal bleeding, or spotting, but that is not the same thing as a menstrual period.

Hi Bella,

I’m not a medical doctor, but I write a lot about pregnancy and women’s health.
Anyway,
The pull-out method isn’t that effective at preventing pregnancy, since men can’t control precum and there is some semen in precum. So there is a possible chance that pregnancy is possible. It’s a low chance, but there’s a chance nevertheless. Stress, poor eating habits definitely can make your period late. So, I would highly recommend that you take a home pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant or not. Good luck!

I’m not on birth control and my bf used a condom the 2 times we have done it. My period has always been the part of the last and first week of the month and it is the 12th, its never that late. i am really worried that i may be pregnant. Theres also a chance his precum could have gone inside me, can that cause pregnancy? But i know stress can affect my period as well, and a lot has been going on lately. One of my best friends died about 2 weeks ago which is around when i would have started my period and i’ve been worried about colleges. Because all of that going on i only just noticed i was late.

Hi Sara,

I’m so sorry to hear about your best friend’s death, and the other stress that is going on in your life. Because of the major stress in your life, I thinking that that may be the reason that your period is late. Although precum can cause pregnancy, since you used a condom when you had sex, there’s a good chance that you are not pregnant. If you are worried, you should take a home pregnancy test. But I have a feeling, from what you’ve told me, that it may be stress that’s causing your period to be late. Good luck and take care.

Hi Val,

Don’t worry. It’s SO normal to have irregular periods within the first 2 years of your period starting. It will probably be a few years before your period becomes more regular. Cramps are also very, very normal when you have your period. So don’t worry. You are normal. Everything is fine.

If you are worried, you should go see a doctor. Call around at different doctors in town and see how much it costs to get an appointment without insurance. Your symptoms do not sound normal to me, so that’s why I recommend you go see a doctor to get it checked out.

Hello, i’m 16. It got my first period in December 2009. But I have been really struggerling with constant lightheadedness/dizziness, and feeling tired and just ill in general. These symptoms started in November 2009. (1 month before my first period). I have had blood tests and all that came up was low phosphate. They have also said my blood pressure is low. Been to doctors constantly and they don’t know what it is. My periods are also irregular. I Hadn’t had a period since May 2011, then I got one in October 2011, and I haven’t had another one since. Don’t know what to do…
It’s affected me really bad as i had to quit college and leave me job.. ! Hope you can help :D
Thank you :)

Hi Amber,
Your symptoms may be due to your low low blood pressure and low phosphate. I would recommend that you switch doctors and find someone who can help you figure out what’s going on. Sometimes, it may take several different doctors to properly diagnose and treat you. Good luck.

Hi my name is Stephanie, I’ve got a kind of weird question. I’ve been having my perios since around age 11 or so..? Anywho it has always been normal until not too long ago. About 3 months ago I had 2 periods in one month. The first one started around the first of the month lasted about 5 days; then the second one was towards the middle to end of the month. (& it also lasted about 5days) The next month I started in the middle of the month (& it went to almost the end & it lasted 7 days). Now last month (November 2011) I had NO period, & today (Dec.1, 2011) I started & the cramps are very bad! If this info would help any I am 18yrs of age, will not be 19 until August; & I am NOT sexually active. So do you have any idea what could be causing me to do this?

You might have an underlying health problem that’s causing your periods to be out of whack. Please go see a gynecologist.

Hi Maddie,

I wouldn’t worry about missing your period at this point. You just started your period, and your hormones are still fluctuating. You are going to have irregular periods for awhile. It’s nothing to worry about. If you’re having signs of your period – like cramps and headaches – it means that it’s on its way! Maybe very soon or in a few weeks.

I’m fifteen years old and iv had horrible periods (bad cramps and heavy bleeding) until three months ago when i started on birth control…the first month i was spotting the whole time, so i switched to a different pill. then i spotted every 3 days but was VERY sexually active. Then i switched to a higher dosage of a different pill (all birth control switches have been recommended by my doctor) and havent had any spotting but have been sexually active and using the pull out method. Its been the second day iv missed my period (according to my birth control) and Im really stressed that i might be pregnant. My parents dont know im sexually active and would FLIP OUT if they knew….so im scared to aask my mom if this is normal to be missing it in case she questions me. Im on Mononessa. HELP!

473 DP Nguyen November 29, 2011 at 7:22 pm

If you have been using your birth control pills consistently, and using the pull out method (in addition), then you have a low risk of pregnancy. However, there is always a risk of pregnancy, since no birth control is 100 percent effective. If you are worried about pregnancy, you should take a home pregnancy test to confirm. Thats the only way to know. Try not to stress out until you get the results of the pregnancy test. Good luck.

I am not a medical doctor, but if you have gone 5 months without a period, please go see your gynecologist to see what’s going on. There are a number of reproductive problems that may be to blame. Thyroid disease is definitely one possible cause. But please go see your doctor to figure out what’s going on. Good luck.

Dear Dr Nguyen,
Hi i’m 17 this year and im a virgin. My period first came when i was 13 going 14 and it has been irregular since my first period. Once i had a 4 to 5 month gap between my period. The last time i had my period this year was end of august and till now my period have not come. Its almost 3 months and i am very worried. My friends around me all have period like a clockwork but i on the other hand never had a regular period before. And maybe im paranoid but i realise that my belly is very big! So i get all paranoid that i may be pregnant even though i know its impossible because i am a virgin. Also i know that stress is a factor for irregular period but i can’t help to feel stress about not having regular period! Am i abnormal? I’m so worried that my period will not come :/ oh and also, when my period comes, it tends to be heavier then normal people, for example, in the first few days of my period i can fill a night pad in about 4 – 5 hours. Is this normal?

480 DP Nguyen November 27, 2011 at 10:02 pm

Hi Prescilla,

I am not a medical doctor but I highly recommend that you go see a gynecologist. Having irregular periods is normal as a teen, but if you are missing your period for 4-5 months in a row, paired with the anxiety and paranoia that you are having, this sounds like you may have polycystic ovaries. You should ask your parents to take you to go see a gynecologist.

If you are a virgin, you can’t be pregnant. But I am concerned about your other symptoms. Please go see a doctor and get a checkup. Polycystic ovaries, if that’s what you have, need to be treated to preserve your future fertility.

Please go see a gynecologist and see what’s going on with you. Good luck!

So I have always had an irregular period since I was 16. Sometimes it even skips a month. However, my boyfriend and I have become sexually active and I am 3 weeks late. He put his penis in and pulled right out once and that was the only time we did that. It was literally a second. So I am just being paranoid about maybe being pregnant. I know that stress is a big reason for a missed period so I dont know what to do. I am only 18 and cannot handle a baby right now. Do you recommend any way of relaxing and maybe ways to get my hormones back on track?

Hi! I’m 18.
I usually have irregular periods. My period is usually a couple of days late, but this month it has been about more than a week late. My last period started on October 6. And now it’s November 19 and I’m freaking out. I am sexually active and no protection just pull out method. My partner and I have been doing this for about 2 years. I’ve been getting cramps but it’s on and off. I took a pregnancy test 2 days ago (11/17) and it came out negative. I heard that stress can cause you miss your period or make it late. And I have been stressing out about getting pregnant, not only that I’ve been stressing out about college work too. I can’t calm down I’m constantly thinking about it. And I’ve been so sensitive and emotional and I usually feel this way before I get my period. And my breasts have been sore but not so much. I did get lower backache but only for a day. Could I be pregnant?

Reply

484 DP Nguyen November 19, 2011 at 6:45 pm

Yes, there is a chance that you are pregnant. Especially if it’s over a week late. Take another pregnancy test next week to see. If that’s negative and your period still hasn’t come, you should go see a doctor for a blood pregnancy test.

In the future, you should use condoms or another birth control method. The pull out method does have a high failure rate, especially since pre-cum can have semen in it.

Good luck!

Hi Ashley,

Your mom is right. It is completely NORMAL for you to have missed periods sometimes. You are only 12, so it is NORMAL and nothing to be worried about. When they say the first two years, this means that for most girls, their periods won’t even out until 2 years after they first start. So yeah dont worry about it.

If you have been to the doctor, I wouldn’t be too worried. Some women just have irregular periods. That’s what’s “normal” for them. Plus, you are still young. There’s a good chance that your period is going to become more normal the older that you get. If you’re still worried about it when you’re 18, go see an gynecologist to talk about your concerns. Good luck!

The zit is probably a hormonal thing. But if comes back, if the pimple is itchy, painful or have discharge, then you should go see your doctor, since it can be an infection of some kind. If it doesn’t come back, don’t worry about. But make sure that you always wipe from front to back, and keep that area clean, especially when you’re having your period. Never wipe from your butt to your vagina, since that can spread bacteria to your vaginal area. But for now, try not to worry about it.

Hi there,
I’m 18 years old and I’ve had irregular periods before but then it got normal. On Nov. 3rd, my boyfriend and I had protected sex. I was supposed to get my period on Nov. 10 but it’s been 6 days now and I still haven’t got it. However, last month my period was late by 5 days. I read on internet that stress can cause your period to be late and I was actually emotionally stressed out last month (which is why my period was 5 days late i’m guessing) and this month as well.
So could it be that my period is late because I was emotionally stressed out and still stressing out now (i’m being paranoid that i might be pregnant)? Or it is possible that i could actually be pregnant? (the condom didn’t break and he didn’t get anything near my area)

Thank you!

I think your stress is causing your late/missed period. If you had your period after plan B and you had all those negative pregnancy tests, I dont think that you are pregnant. I think it may be stress, poor eating habits, something else at play. If you dont have one period within a 3-month range, please go see a doctor to figure out whats causing it. It’s possible that you could get pregnant by precum, but it’s highly unlikely. Your late period is probably just due to your age and the stress you’re under. Hormones are still fluctuating when you’re 16, so I really wouldn’t worry about. But make sure you use protection when you have sex! Or even if you’re just playing around. It’s always a good idea. Good luck! And I’m sorry about your vaginal thrush! The antifungal cream should help you feel better soon!

I haven’t had a period since September 6th, but I’m definitely not pregnant. I did use emergency contraceptive pills in mid-September (the condom slipped off, THAT’S always fun…) so could this be causing my delayed period?

Reply

521 DP Nguyen November 4, 2011 at 11:33 pm

With emergency contraception, most women have a normal period within three weeks after taking EC. So I don’t think it could have delayed it by two months. Have you taken a home pregnancy test? It’s possible that EC didn’t work in time.

If you’re not pregnant, I would go to the doctor to figure out what the problem is.

I took a home pregnancy test about a week after my period should have shown up in October. It was negative. I took another a week later, also negative. I had one done at the clinic today. Also negative. Plus, I have no pregnancy symptoms other than the missing periods. So at this point I feel comfortable ruling out pregnancy. I’m quite puzzled by all this. I’ve always been extremely regular and now they seem to have just stopped. I’m not getting any of my usual PMS symptoms (acne, bloating, mood changes, etc.) or any other symptoms at all, really. No weight gain or anything like that. I feel totally normal. Just…no period.

If you’re feeling normal, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. There are a lot of things that can make your periods irregular. But it is unusual since you’ve always been so regular. I suggest you Wait another month, and if your period hasn’t come, go see a gynecologist to see what’s really going on. Good luck!

I think your period will come soon. Bloating and cramps are normal PMS symptoms. Try not to stress out. Your period will come soon!

Hi Dr. Nguyen,
so im 19 years old and have had my period since i was about 14. it started off irregular, like i would get it early in the month then during the middle of the next month. but now i usually get it around the first week of the month. i had sex right after my period ended in the beginning of october, and i have yet to get it this month. i know its still early in the month but im paranoid. i work two jobs and i am a full time student so im stressed out a lot but ive never missed a period. however i started taking weight loss pills called OxyElite Pro and i get light headed and dizzy and feel nausea at times since i have started, which was about one week ago. are those signs of pregnancy too? i took three pregnancy tests and they all came back negative. or do you think me being a little bit late is being caused by these pills and stress combined?

528 DP Nguyen November 4, 2011 at 3:12 am

I think your late period is probably due to the weight loss pills and your stress together. Weight loss pills are really bad for your health anyway, and they may have messed up your cycle. But yeah, I don’t think you should worry – especially if the pregnancy tests came back negative. Get off the weight loss pills, start eating healthy, and I am sure your period will come. Good luck

Heyy!
So, I’m 16 and have had my period since 6th grade, and ever since then my period has been pretty regular. But here and there I’ll be a couple days late. I had my period from September 28 till October 3rd and my boyfriend and I haven’t done anything this month besides fingering, thats it..but I figured I was supposed to start around October 25 and its November 3rd. I have been stressed lately but I’m always stressed and its never really caused a problem. I highly doubt I’m pregnant but can you help me?!

530 DP Nguyen November 4, 2011 at 3:09 am

I wouldn’t worry about it. Sometimes your period is going to be late due to stress or emotions or whatever. I think it’s normal for your periods to not be exactly perfect on their due date. Hang in there, you’ll get your period soon. You should only really worry and need to go to the doctor if you haven’t had a period in 3 months.

Try not to worry. You probably Do NOT have a dangerous disease. You will probably still get pregnant! But I highly recommend that you go see a doctor to check to see why you’re not having your periods regularly. It may be stress or medications you may be on that are causing your irregular periods. Please, please go see a doctor and figure out what’s causing it. But don’t be scared. You’re only 18. Sometimes, it takes longer for some girls to have more regular periods.

Go see a doctor if you’re nervous. But I am sure that’s nothing serious! Good luck!

If your periods are only varying from week to week, I wouldn’t worry about it. That’s pretty normal, and it may be due to stress, anxiety, medications, or other lifestyle factors. You should only really worry if you haven’t had a period in 3 months. You are fine if youre having one once a month. Try not to stress! Good luck

You need to take a home pregnancy test to make sure that you’re not pregnant. If you get a negative result, and your period still doesn’t come next week, go see your doctor.

Sometimes stress can mess up your periods and cause you to have irregular periods. As long as you are healthy, please do not focus on dieting. Eating disorders are very unhealthy, and they can lead you to have irregular periods and even no periods at all. They can mess up your reproductive system, so please eat right and stay healthy!

Hey– I’m 18 years old and recently recovered from an Eating Disorder. I just got my period back on 10/14/2011. It was light and pretty much just spotting. I did have PMS symptoms prior like breast pain, back pain, and cramping. On 10/30/2011 I had literally a minute of unprotected sex (he pulled out too.) and I bled and started cramping. Actually, I’ve bled and cramped the four other times I tried having intercourse. That’s what leads me to stop having sex. The morning after I was still cramping, slightly bleeding and I’ve had painful breasts. I’m scared that either I’m pregnant or that I might have some sort of precancer. I went the the gyno about 5 months ago and she said I was okay and STD free, but I’m still scared. How possible is it that I’m pregnant vs. just having PMS?

Reply

544 DP Nguyen November 1, 2011 at 12:20 pm

You should take a home pregnancy test if you are nervous. If he pulled out (and no semen came out into your vagina), I wouldn’t be too nervous. There is a very tiny, tiny percentage that precum can cause you to get pregnant. But take a home pregnancy test to be sure.

Sometimes, you may have cysts or fibroids that can cause you to have bleeding and cramping after sex. You should go back to the gyno and ask her about these symptoms. She needs to do another thorough pelvic, pap, or ultrasound to see whats causing you to bleed and cramp after sex. I am guessing it could be cysts or fibroids – both are benign (not cancerous), and they are common in certain ethnic groups. So please go back to the doctor and figure out what it may be. Good luck!

Hi. My name is Coryn, and I’m 18. I’ve had my period since I was 11 and have had pretty regular ones so far. In the 7 years I’ve had my period, I’ve missed maybe 3 months spread out, which I’ve read is normal. However, my last period was August 18th or 19th, so I’ve missed two months in a row. I’m not sexually active, so I know for sure I’m not pregnant. But I’m starting to freak out a little bit because everywhere I’ve read said that there could be something seriously wrong, especially if I miss one more. Should I be worried or wait and see what happens next month??

Reply

546 DP Nguyen October 29, 2011 at 11:43 pm

Hi Coryn,

That is unusual for you to miss your period, especially since you have a history of being regular. If you miss your period next month, call your gynecologist and schedule an appointment to see what could be wrong. Usually, it’s 3 months in a row of having no period that doctors want you to come and see them.

If all your pregnancy tests are negative, I think your period is just late. Headaches, vaginal discharge are all normal PMS symptoms, and nothing too worrisome. I am not sure about the muscle twitches. If your period doesn’t come in the next 2 weeks, take another pregnancy test. And always use protection when you have sex! Best wishes!

hi I’m alex I’m almost 14 and I’ve missed a period. I don’t normally and I’m weird about sex so I’m a virgin. I dontt understand why I’ve missed just this one although I get the cramps. Can you help me to understand. I have a slight eating disorder sometimes I won’t eat or I’ll eat very little and other times I eat a lot but I get paranoid easy. so when I missed this month I’ve become more and more paranoid about it and its at the point that I can barely sit still.
Can you help?

550 DP Nguyen October 29, 2011 at 10:43 am

Hi Alexandria,

When you’re a teen, it’s normal for your period to fluctuate sometimes. However, if you do have an eating disorder, even if it’s slight, this can mess up your menstrual cycle. Eating too little can zap your body of nutrients, which makes it harder for your organs (like your ovaries) to work properly. So, when you don’t eat, your body may not be able to ovulate normally, and if you don’t ovulate, you won’t have a period.

I’m proud of you for still being a virgin. You should definitely wait until you are much, much older. But please, eat and have healthy eating habits, since this is the only way that you will have a healthy body and a healthy menstrual cycle.

Try not to worry though. Just eat well, and don’t be stressed.

I’m Yssa. I’m only 18 yrs old. I currently have a boyfriend. Were sexually active. But somethings strange i’ve experienced this month.

First thing, i didn’t or we didn’t use any calendar method. Cause i have an irregular period. Even though i have it every month. Sometimes i’ll have it twice a month or it’ll last for more than 3 weeks.

This month of october, i suppose to have my period on the last week of this month. But on the mid week of this month, me and my boyfriend had sex. We didn’t have unprotected sex for 10 months.

I thought I maybe pregnant. But as I read articles on the internet, stress is one of the reasons to have missed period and also regular exercise. I am on a diet, and having dance practices everyday. I am also stressed out for my grades.

I didn’t know what to do. So please help me with some advice.

Oh, and by the. I have experienced severe stomach pain earlier this week. That caused me to vomit all of what i’ve eaten. And when I tap my stomach, it sounds like i’ve drums inside my tummy.

Please help.

Hi Yssa,

If you had unprotected sex around the time you ovulated (which to me, sounds like you did, if you were supposed to have your period this week and you had sex in the middle of the month), you may be pregnant. Please take a home pregnancy test and contact a doctor for an appointment. Best of luck.

I forgot to add, the past two months my period has only lasted 3 days. VERY heavy on the first day and then fades. Is this normal, too?

Reply

554 DP Nguyen October 28, 2011 at 11:01 am

Hi Andrea,

If you are using birth control consistently (never missing a pill) and you use condoms along with your pill, I wouldn’t worry about pregnancy. Some women do have 3 day periods. It can range from 3-7 days, depending on the way. Usually heavy on the first day, and becomes lighter until you have no period at all. I would not worry. If you are ever nervous about pregnancy, I definitely recommend taking a home pregnancy test. BUT again, if you use two forms of birth control, you are probably not pregnant, and you are just nervous.

Sometimes, your period can be late by 2-3 days and this is normal. It’s probably stress, or another factor. But it’s normal and nothing to worry about.

Hello, my name is Andrea.

I have been taking birth control since April of this year. (2011) This was my first time taking birth control. I have been sexually active since. Every time My boyfriend and I have sex, I am on the pill AND we use a condom. I am extremely paranoid about becoming pregnant. I am only 19, I have had my period every time, and my periods have become more regular since I have started birth control. However, my period this month is late by 2 days. I always worry about becoming pregnant to the point where I make myself sick. I think it’s all psychological. I worry all day about “what if”. I have never been pregnant before, and the thought terrifies me. Could it all be just a mind game?

Hello,
I am a 19 year old, names Michelle.
Okay so I haven’t started my period and i was suppose to start the 15th of this month 10/15/2011 and I still haven’t started. I’m 11 days late to this day and Yes I’ve been sexually active and no protection just pull out method. We had sex about a few days in a row. Well my periods are irregular so I’ve skipped before but here recently i haven’t felt that well at all my stomach cramps off and on and i sometimes get hot all of a sudden then really cold. I was born with SIDS so i am for a miracle baby. What could be wrong? Could I be pregnant?

558 DP Nguyen October 27, 2011 at 8:46 pm

Hi Michelle,
The pull out method isn’t really effective as a form of birth control, so I am guessing that there is a good chance that you are pregnant. Take a home pregnancy test to confirm, or schedule an appointment with your doctor and tell him/her your symptoms. Best of luck!

Hi Maggie,
Do your cramps feel like menstrual cramps? If they don’t, then you might have another health issue at play. BUT if they are menstrual cramps (PMS cramps), then don’t worry. Your PMS symptoms are going to change as your period and hormones even out. I had the worst cramps when I was a teenager, and they went away once I reached college. So, don’t stress out about it. You’re only 14 :-)

However the next day my flow has gotten more and with little clots and massive pain was in my lower back and left side. I’am still bleeding which hasnt seem to subside. This truely doesnt even feel like my period which I have with massive cramps headaches ect. Although I have been having migraines with this. When you’re 16, your periods can fluctuate. Your period might be late due to stress (exam season is probably coming up for you, right?), unhealthy eating habits, lifestyle factors. I really wouldn’t worry about your period being late if you haven’t had sex. Sometimes it might skip a month for whatever reason. Doctors usually don’t investigate missing periods until you’ve missed them for 3 months in a row.
