Teen Menstrual Cycles: Why Missed Periods, Irregular Periods are Normal

Teen Menstrual Cycles: Why Missed Periods, Irregular Periods are NormalRecently, there has been a flood of questions from my teen readers on my popular post, “Reasons for Missed Period – When You’re Not Pregnant.” I want to address the most commonly asked questions to alleviate any worries that teenagers may have about their periods.

Age of Your First Period

A teenager typically gets her first period between 12 and 14 years of age. Some girls can start menstruating as early as 9 years old. Others won’t have their first period until they’re 16 years of age. When you’ll have your first period depends on how fast you’re developing. Some girls are early bloomers; others bloom later. If you haven’t had your period by 16 years old, visit your doctor and find out what’s the hold up. In some cases, however, it may still be normal.

How Long Does a Period Last?

A regular period can last between three to seven days. During the teen years, you can bleed for even longer. Some teenagers have their period for 10 days! The length of your period can change from month to month. The heaviness and color of your flow will also change from the beginning of your period to the end. On Day 1, 2, and 3 of your period, it’s normal for your flow to be heavy. Your menstrual bleeding will become lighter and lighter until your period ends.

Irregular Menstrual Cycles and Missed Periods are Normal

In the first two years after you start menstruating (having your period), it’s normal for you to experience an irregular menstrual cycle. You may have a period twice in one month, or you may go without a period for two months at a time. Likewise, you may have your period for only 2 or 3 days one month, and the next time you have your period, it lasts for 7 days. This is normal during the teenage years. Your body is influenced by your growth (and puberty is a time of major growth), so this can change your menstrual cycle from month to month.

The length of time that your period lasts, and the amount of blood that you experience is influenced by the level of hormones that your body is manufacturing. Since a teenage girl is growing, her hormones are going to be fluctuating and this can change the amount of blood and the length of your period from one cycle to the next.

In a nutshell, missed periods and irregular periods are normal in the first two years after you start having your period. Your body will eventually develop a regular cycle. The average cycle length is 28 days, but not every woman follows this textbook rule. A regular menstrual cycle can run from 21 days to 35 days (or longer). If you’re a teenager, as long as you have one period every three months, you should be fine. But always call a doctor if you’re worried about anything.

*Very Important* – If you do not want to get pregnant, always use protection when you have sex. The only 100 percent way to protect yourself against STDs and pregnancy is to NOT HAVE SEX. Take it from an oldie – it’s always best to wait and save yourself for that special person.

When Should You Worry about a Missed or Irregular Period?

Missed periods and irregular periods can be normal in teenagers, but you should consult a doctor if you’re a teen and you haven’t had your period for at least three months. This may be a sign of a reproductive problem, like premature ovarian failure.

If you have at least one period within that three month range, you shouldn’t worry. This can be normal, just a byproduct of your fluctuating hormones. Your menstrual cycle will eventually even out, and you will get a normal cycle (although it may not be the perfect 28 day cycle.)

Reasons You May Miss Your Period When You’re Not Pregnant

If you are sexually active and you notice something unusual with your menstrual pattern, there is always a chance that you could be pregnant. Condoms are only 99 percent effective. Birth control pills are only effective if you take them on a regular basis. Skipping a pill can put you at risk for pregnancy.

Other reasons you may experience irregular periods, or missed periods, include excessive exercise, birth control pills, stress, and eating disorders.

Excessive Exercise - If you’re an athlete, you may notice a change in your menstrual cycle if you’re training super hard or exercising all the time. Excessive exercise can result in less bleeding, fewer periods a year, or your periods may stop completely. In most cases, your periods will return to normal within months after you stop participating in the strenuous sport.

If your period has stopped completely and it’s been over six months, you need to go see your doctor to rule out any medical problems.

Birth Control Pills – Sometimes, birth control pills are prescribed to help regulate your period. They can, however, cause you to experience a missed period. Hormonal methods of birth control, which contain the hormone progesterone, can cause you to miss your period.

Stress – Whether you’re in middle school or high school, schoolwork can really stress you out, especially if your parents are putting a lot of pressure on you to succeed. Stress is a normal part of life, but a ton of emotional stress can affect your period. Too much stress in your life may cause you to experience missed periods or irregular periods.

Eating Disorders – If you have an eating disorder, like anorexia or bulimia, they can slow down your bodily functions and cause your period to stop completely. Please contact a doctor or reach out to an adult if you have an eating disorder. You can also reach out to me, and I’ll be here to help you through this to the best of my ability.

PMS Symptoms Can Be Similar to Early Pregnancy Symptoms

If you’re a teenager who is sexually active, you must be aware that there is always a chance that you may be pregnant. A missed period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy. Please take a home pregnancy test, if you are ever worried. If you test negative at first, and your period still doesn’t come, take another test in about a week or so.

Always keep in mind, however, that premenstrual (PMS) symptoms can mimic early pregnancy symptoms. Even for the most experienced woman, it can be difficult to distinguish the two. For example, breast tenderness, fatigue, and food cravings are normal PMS symptoms, but they are also pregnancy symptoms. Nausea and vomiting can also affect you when you’re PMSing, and it’s an early pregnancy symptom. Taking a home pregnancy test is the only way for you to tell whether or not you’re pregnant.

I’m 17 and had sex this past sunday, but I’m on ginette35 for more than 2 weeks now. I feel a little dry down there, but this morning it was like white egg parts in my fluid?? I’m active everyday with activities(sport). I’m also really stressed. I’ve been sick this whole week, so everything affects my cycle, but now I just want to know can I be/get pregnant or am I on ovulation?

Hi, I hav a few questions

I am 21 years old and I recently lost my virginity to (now) my ex boyfriend. We hav had sex 3 times after that first time… ALWAYS using condoms. After my first time, my period was right on time, but the day after I finished my period, we had sex the second time. Before, during and after sex, we checked to see if the condom was still on properly (which it was) and he came inside me all 3 times (again) WITH the condom on. I have been taking cortisone pills for my excema. I have phoned my doctor and he said that my period would be delayed from the medicine…. Now my question is, would I be pregnant because my boyfriend came into me? (Btw, it was about 3 weeks ago the last time we had sex)

Please help, I’m stressing and it doesn’t help…
Thank you

Im 15 and I just lost my virginity about a week ago. My period was regular until then and it was supposed to come the week that I had sex and now it’s over a week late. My friend told me that one you become sexually active, your period can become irregular. I’m not sure if that’s true. Can I get some help?

Try not to worry. It is definitely normal to have some variability in your period length at your age.

Hi :) I am15 and recently I had my fasting month. My menstruation finished at the end of July around the 20th. After that for the whole month of August it did not come until the end maybe 27th or somewhere there. But the issue is that my period has not stopped UNTILL now! It came around the end of August and for some reason it was a heavy period unlike before and it slowed down until 2 days ago when only little spots would come and then the flow just increased again today but not as heavy just the normal. Oh and i started boxing training a day or two after my period started on the 27/8/2012 or so which requires heavy exercises and I do it 3 times a week for 2 or 3hrs with breaks ofcourse. Right now I am just freaking out wondering if I have cancer .. 0.0 PLEASE HELPPP ANd yup still a virgin . :)

I’m 16. The last time I had sex with my boyfriend, we had sex with a condom then he went to the bathroom, peed and showered and then we had sex again, but without a condom for a little, but then he put another condom on and we finished. That was about 2 weeks before my period. Today my period is a week late (has not come yet). However, I started to have signs of my period coming about a week before my period was due. My breasts were just a little sore, but now they have become more sore and i do not know if i am just paranoid, but i think my nipples are a little darker. Five days before my period was due i took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Two days ago (5 days after my missed period) i took another pregnancy test and it was negative as well. My brests are sore. I am still having discharge as normal as usually do, i have no cravings ( but i did a week ago), and over the past two days ive had a pain on my right side near my hip bone. Are these signs that my period is coming? Also, I have never had regular 28 day cycles my period is always a little off. For about two weeks know i have been so stressed about thinking im pregnant that i have lost 10 pounds. Can that amount of stress lead to my late period? One last thing, I have struggled with anorexia for about 2 or 3 years now and the stress makes me sick to my stomach and gives me no appetite. Also, since my last period, i have become vegan. Can my lack of eating, new diet, and stress cause my period to be late? All of my pregnancy tests have proven to be negative and I have a pain in my right side sort of where my ovary would be i guess lol. Help in anyway that you can please.

Hi, I’m 17 and still abstinent. Never had sex at all. I haven’t had my period for a month now. I got my period when I was 13 and they have always been irregular but this is the first time that I missed one in about a few months. I know you can’t get pregnant from masturbation but I was wondering….. I don’t like talking to any body about these kinds of things but I need some advice… Is there a reason it’s doing this to me? Also i just started a tae kwon do class 2 – 3 months ago and I have had quite a bit of stress… But I’m still worried I could be pregnant or have something wrong with me…. Could you help me?

Hi, I’ve had my period since i was 10 and I am currently 18. My periods have always been heavy but sometimes it is lighter then usual and sometimes it varies from being heavy for a months then light one month then back to heavy. Is this normal for my age? Is it possible for my cycle to still be somewhat irregular even though its been over 8 years? And also is it possible that being stressed can lighten the flow of a period?

I am not on birth control. I am sexually active for over 3 years and always use protection

Thanks so much.

Hi, I’ve been having periods for over a year now and I’ve never missed one but they keep getting further and further apart. First difference was only 30 days and now it’s over 40. My mum has regular periods and says she never had anything like this. She did have something that made her periods heavy and painful though. I thought I would be a bit more like her and actually I get more scared there is something wrong with me each later period. Please help!¡!¡

Hi, I’m 16 and have been sexually active for about 2 months. My periods have never been regular, they come every few months. But only having started being sexually active fairly recently, I’m kind of panicking this month. I DID get my period last month, but I have this nervous thing feeling like I should get it this month too? I don’t have a very good sleeping pattern or eating habits, I usually only eat like 2 meals a day. I think I’m dehydrated, and being close to exams week I am fairly stressed. We always use a condom, but having missed it I’m panicking thinking I’m pregnant. Is this probable? Is it more likely my eating habits/sleeping habits/ stress levels are having an effect on my cycle? Please help when you get the chance.

I’m 17 got my period when i was 11 but only got it normally the first 3 or 4 months after then i started getting it only like 4/5 times a year. But since 2010 I believe, I started getting it only twice a year & I’ve been like that since then. I don’t know what’s wrong i need you too Please help me when you have time.

Hmm, it’s not normal for you to only be getting a period once or twice a year. I would highly recommend going to see a gynecologist to try to figure out what’s going on. You may have an ovulation problem – your ovaries aren’t ovulating every month as they should. Perhaps it is PCOS or another health issue. But your doctor will give you clearer answers on what is causing your irregular periods.

i’m 15 and started my period nearly 3 years ago, my period is sometimes regular and others npt. My mum earlier this year told me to have the implant as she found out that i had sex with my boyfriend of 2 years. Having the implant can mess up your cycle as i missed a month in July. Ive again missed a month even though i have had symptoms of coming on and have been ill due to stress, and now my mum is convinced im pregnant! what should i do??? x
