Reasons for Missed Period – When You’re Not Pregnant

What are the reasons for a missed period when you are not pregnant? For most women, a missed period is often the first sign that they are pregnant. (For many women, they’re no longer wondering if it’s PMS or Pregnancy.)

But what if you’ve missed your period, and you’re not pregnant – what could be the cause or reason?

Amenorrhea – Missed Periods

The medical name for a missed period, or an absence of periods (one or more missed periods) is amenorrhea.

There are two types of amenorrhea:

  • Primary amenorrhea - You’re older than 15 and you’ve never had a menstrual period.
  • Secondary amenorrhea - You’ve been having normal menstrual cycles and they’ve suddenly stopped. This is the more common form of amenorrhea.

A majority of women have between 11 and 13 menstrual periods each year. Most periods are 28 days apart (this is the average length of a menstrual cycle), but a normal menstrual cycle can range between 21 and 35 days apart. A missed period, or an irregular period, should be examined in terms of what’s normal for your individual case. (Because menstrual cycles can vary, for a number of reasons, if you have a period every month, but it falls outside of this 35 day mark, you are probably fine. If your cycle is over 40 days apart, it is highly advisable that you go see a gynecologist to get checked out. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!)

When you’ve missed a period, you should first take a home pregnancy test to confirm that you are not pregnant. Missing a period can cause you a lot of stress and anxiety, so it’s important that you talk to your doctor if you’re concerned.

Unfortunately, secondary amenorrhea isn’t diagnosed until you have missed three menstrual cycles in a row. However, if you’ve missed your period, it’s possible that you’ll get one next month. Secondary amenorrhea and skipped periods often have the same causes.

* Note, if you are ever worried about your period, you should go see a gynecologist or a doctor and ask about your problems! *

Causes for Missed Period – Not Pregnancy

If you’ve missed your period, you’ll want to go to the doctor to rule out pregnancy. (You should also take a home pregnancy test to confirm that you’re not expecting.) If you’re not pregnant, your missed period may be due to the following:

1. Stress and anxiety – Stress isn’t good for your body, and it can cause you to have delayed ovulation. When you don’t ovulate at your normal time, this can mess up the regular timing of your menstrual cycle. As a result, you have a late period. Sometimes, you are so stressed that you don’t ovulate at all. So you will have a missed period that month.

Stress temporarily alters the functioning of your hypothalamus – the part of the brain that regulates your menstrual cycle. Once your stress level decreases, your periods should resume.

2. Excessive weight loss, or weight gain – Losing a substantial amount of weight, or gaining too much weight too quickly can cause you to experience menstrual problems, like a missed period or a delayed period. In order to have normal menstrual cycles, you need a specific amount of body fat. The fat cells in your body are responsible for producing estrogen, which is the female hormone that is responsible for maturing the eggs in your follicles, so that you ovulate and have a normal period every month. The balance of fat on your body is important. Not enough weight, or too much weight can cause you to have a missed period.

If you are overweight, you have too many fat cells. This can cause you to produce too much estrogen. As a result, your body may react to this excess level of estrogen like it’s birth control. You won’t ovulate; you will experience missed periods or no periods at all; and you may become infertile. This is the reason that many obese women suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Losing weight is often one of the best ways to treat PCOS and regulate your periods.

3. Contraceptives – Some women who take certain birth control pills don’t have regular periods. They can have missed periods or irregular periods. Some of the newer birth control pills (Seasonale, Yaz, Seasonique, Yasmin, and Lybrel) can change the regularity of your period (i.e. missed periods), as well as your menstrual flow when you do have your period. Unlike the traditional birth control pills, which made you take 21 days of pills with hormones and seven days of placebos (in which you experienced vaginal bleeding like with a regular menstrual period), many of these newer birth control pills contain continuous hormones. They combine smaller doses of estrogen and progestin (the synthetic form of progesterone in your body). You may have no periods at all, due to the continuous hormones, or you may have missed periods for several months in a row. For example, Seasonique and Seasonale gives you only four menstrual periods a year; Yaz gives you shorter and lighter periods that are more regular; Yasmin makes your period lighter and more regular; and with Lybrel, you have no periods at all. Once you stop using these birth control pills, it may take you between three to six months to have regular ovulation and menstruation again.

Birth control that is injected (like the Depo-Provera birth control shot) or implanted (like Implanon) can also cause you to have irregular, missed or no periods at all.

With the Depo-Provera birth control shot, it’s common for you to experience changes in your regular menstrual cycle. Many women experience irregular bleeding, spotting, and missed period with this contraceptive shot. After a year of getting regular shots, over 50 percent of women on this birth control will stop having their periods at all. This is normal side effect.

If you have Implanon, a common side effect are irregular periods, missed periods, and unpredictable menstrual cycles. Some women experience more vaginal bleeding than before they used this contraceptive. Other women experience less bleeding (such as spotting) or no periods at all. The time in between your periods may also change.

4. Breastfeeding – When you breastfeed exclusively, the hormones that are allowing lactation to occur can block ovulation and your regular menstrual cycle. Some women won’t have their period again until their baby is eating solid foods. In other women, their periods may return sooner.

5. Eating disorders – When you have excessively low body weight (i.e. you’re way too skinny), this can interfere with hormonal functions, which might stop ovulation. These abnormal hormonal changes are the reason that anorexics and bulimics often stop having periods.

When you’re too thin (due to anorexia or excessive weight loss), you don’t have enough fat cells in your body to produce enough estrogen for healthy ovulation. You don’t ovulate, and you will either have a missed period or irregular periods. (Or no periods at all).

6. Rigorous Exercise – Women who participate in activities and sports that require them to undergo rigorous training often experience skipped periods or no periods at all. The high energy expenditure, stress, and low body fat can contribute to no ovulation and missed periods.

7. Medication – There are some medications that can disrupt menstrual cycles. For example, some chemotherapy drugs, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, and oral corticosteroids can cause you to have missed periods, or no menstrual periods at all.

8. Hormonal imbalance – When you have hormonal problems, it can change the levels of hormones that your body requires to support ovulation and the menstruation process. For example, one common cause of irregular periods is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which causes high levels of estrogen and androgen (the male hormone), rather than fluctuating hormonal levels common to a regular menstrual cycle.

9. Problems with your thyroid – Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can cause you to have missed periods and other menstrual irregularities. Thyroid disorders can alter the production of the hormone prolactin. This affects your hypothalamus and disrupts your regular menstrual cycle.

10. Uterine scarring – If your uterus is scarred from disease or medical procedures, this can prevent the normal buildup and shedding of the uterine lining common to a regular menstrual cycle. As a result, you may have very light periods, or no menstrual periods at all. Your uterus can become scarred during a cesarean section, D & C procedure, treatment for uterine fibroids, or due to a health complication.

How to Cope When You Miss a Period

If you have missed your period, but you’re only a week late, try not to stress out. There’s a possibility that your period is just late. Obviously, you should take a home pregnancy test (or two or three) to ensure that you’re not pregnant.

Contact your healthcare provider and make an appointment to see your doctor. You may be asked to undergo a variety of tests and examines to pinpoint why you’ve missed your period.

Your treatment will depend on what’s causing you to miss your menstrual period. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help treat you, or he may recommend that you make certain lifestyle changes.

The bottom line is – don’t stress out if you have a missed period. Some women miss their periods now and then. Chances are your period will return next month.

before I had my son which was 4 years ago, I had very regular 30day cycles. After giving birth, my periods became irregular even after I stopped breastfeeding. Also from the pregnancy I continued to gain weight as many women might relate. I was 115lbs pre-baby and then gained 50 lbs over 4 years. Now I’m at 115lbs, age 30, and have not had any period since half a year ago. but i see many women much heavier than me having babies. so I’m confused. do I have PCOS? the doctor just told me to lose weight and has done no other tests nor does he plan to. I just need to know what’s going on as I would love to have another child in the near future.

PCOS is a sign, try and lose weight as they won’t do tests if your too overweight, then go back to doctor and demand he does tests, if he still doesn’t, see a different doctor for a second opinion.

You can test using first response (which can tell your 5days before you miss your period) or clear blue (which can tell you on the day of your missed period).. Both brand’s are the most expensive HPT’s but defiantly best! Although, most HPT’s should be valid now if you’ve been missed by a week :) Failing that, get your doctor to do a urine test! – But if you are pregnant blood tests will be essential, I’m also terrified of needles but I got one for same reason. Ask for the butterfly needle and take someone with you to distract you, you’ll be fine!

Hi, I am 13 and started my period in January, got my period in February, but not in march or so far in April :/ I don’t know wether this is regular the first few months of having your period, but I am a little concerned. I also have some symptoms that I would get if I had gotten my period, for ex. Cramps and some headaches, is this normal?? I have been feeling stressed lately and depressed, but I don’t know wether this has to do with my period. I also run, and took a break over the winter and started again in march but I also ran in January once and I was fine. Hopefully someone has some answers thanks!!

You are completely fine!!
I started my period at age 11.
Mine were irregular up until age 12.
I then had them every 2nd week of each month.
I’m 15 now, and I’m back to irregular periods.
I’ve never engaged in sexual intercourse, therefore pregnancy is out of the equation.
My last period was in November and still have not had it.
All I can say is, be careful, and keep track of your periods!

I’m 16 and my period ranges from 32 – 38 days and I already had a pregnancy test stating I’m not pregnant. Throughout 2012 – 2013 I never missed one period but now I missed one. Is this something to worry about? Or should I wait out another month to see?

Hey. I’m 17 and started my period when I was 12, and have never missed a period until now. My last period was from March 2 to March 6. I’m not pregnant, because I’m virgin, and the anti-depressant I’m taking doesn’t have anything about irregular menstrual cycles in the side effects. I’m supposed to have my period again the 27th. Should I wait until then to see if it comes, or go ahead and see a doctor?

I’m 16. I started my period when I was 13. I was supposed to start April 19th but I it’s April 23rd and I still haven’t. I’m a virgin but I’ve done sexual things. But a penis has never actually went inside of me. I just started having regular periods this September. This is the first time I’ve been more than a day late since then. I used to go months without having a period. I’m 5 feet tall and about 110 pounds. I’m not underweight or unhealthy. Does anyone know what could be wrong with me?? I’m not stressed either.

Hi, I’ll be 16 next month. I got my period August of 2009. They’ve always been pretty irregular. I would get my period one month, then not the next. Or I would get it several months in a row, but then it would skip for a few months. One time last year I even had it for like three weeks straight. Also, most of the time, it’s worryingly heavy. (to me anyways idk it might be normal) Like, I would put a brand new tampon in before I go to sleep and I would wake up and my pants/shorts and sheets would be soaked, and I would stand up and I could feel it leaking out of me. TMI?? Sorry. Just thought I would explain. Anyways, so like I said, they’re not really what I would call normal. I know it’s normal for a lot of girls/women to have irregular periods (esp. if you’ve just gotten it for the first time) although I’ve had it for 3+ years. But it’s starting to concern me. November and December of 2012, I got it on, or around, the 10th, so, naturally, I expected it to come around the same time in January, but it didnt. So now it’s April, and I haven’t gotten my period in 4 months. My mother had ovarian cancer, I believe, and she had her uterus removed for some reason (I don’t remember why??) and she ocasionally gets ovarian cysts. So clearly, she has had many issues, and she believes its going to happen to me as well, could this be possible? I just am stumped. :/ I’ve never gone this long without it. I’m not over weight, not am I underweight. I can’t figure out what could be causing this. Help me. Please.

My regular doc thinks I had the flu but thats not the case. I really believe I’m pregnant cause I have been pregnant 4x (first ones twins, one sac collapsed). I know my own body. Finally convinced gp of doing blood test and ultrasound to be sure. I’m worried about a tubal hopefully either way I or we will be ok. Let us know how it turned out for you. There are many ppl getting pregnant after tubal, the statistics are not correct.:(

Hi, im 21 years old my cycles have always been highly irregular, i am unable to have kids, i haven’t had a period in about 3 months or so….i have a lot of stress in my life, i eat really healthy but often not much. More recently i have been sick and that has severely screwed up my diet, and body as well, more than usual. I’m not bloating and my body may have the odd bit of spotting never for more than a few hours. I often miss periods for months at a time, i imagine that there are others with a similar problems. My advice is to go see your doctor if you are worried the best thing is to be as honest and open as possible tell them everything and be sure to communicate. Also, pregnancy tests should be taken 2 weeks after intercourse and generally your first pee of the morning, that’s the best way to get an accurate test. Blood tests are also worth looking into, there is nothing wrong with having a little background knowledge when going to see your doctor but self diagnosis will not help you overall in the long run. Doctors generally know what they are doing!

Hi I’m 20 yrs. with a 2 year old. I don’t know what I should do. I’m 3 weeks late, I took 3 HPT and they all came back negative. My last period was March 10 – March 16 I have normal period every 28-29 days. This is the first time I’m late since I had my daughter. I had a blood test done and the result was <1 (a) I don't know what this means the paper they gave me also says, "A sharply reduced or falling serum B-hCg level may indicate an abnormal pregnacy.." That got me nervous. I have been feeling nauseated and when I eat I don't get full it's like I can eat all day but I don't. Can you please recomend what I should do? or What might be wrong?

I have just turned 16 last month and have not yet started bleeding at all. Reading all of the comments really makes me nervouis about it all starting and everything. I am very embarrased about it and have not told anybody AT ALL. ! If there is so many things that can go wrong I dno’t think that I want it all to start at all. My Dad buys me sanitary pads and says ” Maybe you can use these ! “, but I just have a great collection of them now in the bottom drawer. Not sure exactly what to do, don’t really want it but feel as if something needs to take place. Should I eat some sort of food or do some sort of excercise to get things started ?

I’ve bn married for over 9years and haven’t had a baby. I have a normal 25-26days cycle. Now, I’ve missed my period for 6weeks. I had a urine & blood test @ 10days, and it was negative. I’ve had cravings, crazy appetite, frequent urination, insomnia, low back pain and I feel heavy in my lower abd.
I’m scared of going for another test. Could I be pregnant? I’m 34.

I’m 22 and I haven’t had a period scene Christmas. I had been on the pill from the age of 16 til I was 21. I had a very irregular and light period before going on the pill, I don’t think my body had the chance to regulate naturally, but as soon as I started the pill I was regular as clockwork. I came off it the end of last February, had spotting for about 14 days and then absolutely nothing until December. That was very light but I was just glad to finally have something! There’s been nothing scene then, not a drop or spot. I know I should go to the doctors but I’m scared of the worst, I hate needles and blood tests. My greatest fear is not being able to have kids :(

I haven’t had my period in almost 7 months now. I’m not pregnant. I’ve gained quite a bit of weight and just assumed it was stress or a lifestyle change that caused the weight gain. In 2010 I had a total of 3 menstrual cycles. In 2011 and most of 2012 I had regular cycles because I started Nuva-ring to regulate it (it gave me an almost perfect 30 day regular cycle). I had to stop because of financial reasons, and had two regular periods, then absolutely none. My partner has a vicectomy and I even double checked with a doctor in case of a miracle baby, but no; the weight I’ve gained is just me getting fat. What could be most likely be going on? I’m starting to worry.

Then i take pregnancy test, ultrasound and blood test which says that i am not pregnant. I did not bleed then, was it was periods or spotting? please help. I normally have periods two-three days before the date.

I’m 30, over the last decade I’ve been on and off the pill, for the last 5 years Yaz. Previously when coming off the pill I may have missed one period, but then been regular. I stopped taking Yaz when my period waS due before Christmas 2012. Since this period I haven’t had one – so I have missed the last five. SINCE MID 2012 i lost about 20lbs. Since Christmas I have lost a further 10lbs. I exercise quite a lot, am 5’6, 120lbs, muscly, thin. Blood tests indicate my hormones are ok, an ultrasound revealed nothing, an internal examination revealed about 11 small follicles, I’m not PCOS. Why am I not menstruating?

Hi, I appreciate you taking the time o answer my question, I’m 31, have been on the pill for 11 years, off it for 6.5 months now with no periods whatsoever. Before going on the pill, I was regular. I’ve had blood tests, hormone levels are normal plus internal ultrasound, uterus and ovaries look normal. Why aren’t I ovulating, is there anything I can do??
Many thanks,

I’m 28 years old. 5’3, 117 and my weight never fluctuates. I don’t exercise to much, but I eat fairly healthy. I have always had my period each month since I was 16. August of 2012 I had my last period about 9 mo ago. I know I am not pregnant, and after a few months of not having my period I decided to take birth control to see if it would regulate it and no use. My Doctor sent in a prescription that I believe would boost my hormone levels and said I should start my period when I finished it and it never came. In a way it has been nice not having to deal with my period every month but truth is I’m worried esp being the age I am. Can anyone give me any insight on what the problem might be? I’ve been told from a friend she didn’t have her’s for 6 months and then used Nuva Ring and it started hers back up, but thats also scary because there might be some underlying issue.

Rayna. If your not sexually active then I wouldn’t worry. It could skip a month due to stress but also if you just started getting them.they could be irregular. Wait till your at least 2 -3 months late, if it still doesn’t happen go to a gynecologist to get checked out. Hope this helps!!!:)

I’m 16. I didn’t have my period for a little over two months. (last one was in February) I had protected sex once about 5 weeks ago and even though i’m sure i’m not pregnant, i still haven’t had my period. it is now May. i do have high stress levels (partially from not having my period -.-), I dance 6 hours a week and i do have a history of thyroid problems in my family. i’m usually pretty irregular but never to this degree. are any of these reasons why i haven’t gotten it? I’m really starting to worry.

I’m 30 and was diagnosed with endometriosis stage 3/4 depending on the dr. I have had 3 laporscopic surgeries to remove scar tissue. The first was in 2004,second in 2009 and the latest was 2011. I cannot take the pill due to my migraine and previous mini stroke from the migraines. I had been on Lupron 3 rounds after each surgery and went through menopause, so the sympotomd i have now scare me. i have no children. In 2011 around May I missed my period, I’m not sexually active so pregnancy was never a factor. Even with meds it was still 2 months before I started again. Since then I have been pretty normal for me, off a week or early a week. Last month however it stopped again. Same thing, not sexually active. This time I have all the classic period symptoms for me. Breast pain, bloating, migraines, acne, night sweats, hot flashes, anxiety, severe pain and insomnia. Is there anything I can do naturally to help this? I lost 30 lbs but slowly so I don’t think that’s it. I have a new job, I was under a lot of stress with 2 deaths in the family. However I’m very uncomfortable. Any advice I would welcome.

Hi, I’m 34 and have 3 kids and stopped breastfeeding 2 years ago and I have my tubes tied. In January, I missed 3 periods in a row for the first time for no reason and my dr gave me those pill that make your period show up. It showed up and then I got my period again for 2 months and now I’ve missed another 3 months. I called my general doc and my gyn and no one seems to be concerned because I am not trying to conceive. Does that sound right to anyone else? I am concerned that something is wrong and they are like “do you want the medication to start your period?” NO, I want to know WHY it stopped. Am I being paraniod here?

hi im 17 and im a little over 3 weeks late. i’ve had my period for a little over 3 years now & some periods have been regular but others have been irregular. i have had a period that was about 3-4 weeks late before and when i got it it was really light and short. my last period started april 12 & ended april 17 (i cant remember if this was early, on time, or late but i think it was early). about a week before i was supposed to get my period i was really stressed for AP tests and school in general. i have also been feeling really upset lately. i also ran track but the season ended may 4th which was about 2 weeks before i was supposed to get my period so idk if this misse period is a normal thing, from stress, or from exercise. i am also getting more stressed from the missed period because it makes me think that i have a problem like cancer or that i wont be able to have kids when im older. i think my mom may get cysts n her ovaries so that makes me even more nervous that there might be something wrong. i am def not pregant because i am a virgin. can somebody please give me advice or something because i am really scared and upset and stressed and worried becaue i dont want to end up having ovarian cancer or cysts or something that prevents me from having kids so someone please answer me thank you

I have always had regular periods pretty much my entire life. Except when I was doing major work outs many years ago. I was very athletic and found that as you stated that you can go months without a period. It was a few months here and there nothing big. However. These past few years. My health has deteriorated extremely bad to worse. I had 2 back operations that went bad. Then had to have a morphine pump installed. My workout and physically demanding days were over. So was basically my normal day life. So I noticed as I was more and more stressed. I was having less periods. Skip one about each month. Then in Sept. 2012. My oldest daughter was killed. I found nothing seemed to help coup with grief. Even though I was already taken PTSD meds for many reasons I will not go into right now. I stopped all together from having a period up-till tonight. I honestly don’t know what to think. My back feels like my morphine pump has stopped working. My meds Valium and Xanax have stopped and I can’t stop crying. I am very emotional. I have basically closed myself off from life to the outside world. Cause I am so sad of answering and explaining why. I see a Psychoterist and he has even asked to have me go in for out patient. Which I declined. I have a young child I live for. She is my baby girl. I would never harm myself or anyone else. Although I can’t say I didn’t think that after my oldest daughter died. I have gained weight. In fact I am the biggest I have ever been in my life. Which is about 50lbs more than what I should be. I can’t exercise. I can’t walk for more than 5 to 10 minutes at a time and it really is depressing to know I’m in this state and rapidly deterating. If you have any suggestions. Please feel free to reply. Although. I have tried bereavement groups online. And I’m sorry losing a parent against losing a child is not the same to me. I have lost my father. I lost him in Katrina. I almost lost my life too. So I know that feeling. They are not the same. When you have a child that you carry for 9 months and raise and watch them grow up to become an adult. It is the best thing to see and feel. When you lose that child it feels like you’ve died with that child. So yes. I had another little baby late in life. I call her my miracle baby. Because if she wasn’t here. I don’t believe I would be here either. Am I losing my mind. I feel like all I want to do Is save my young daughter from all the hell in the world. I feel like I have become so over protective she is all I think of. I don’t even talk to my other half about anything anymore. Like he is nonexistent to me. Just here when he is. The flame is out. However. I don’t trust him. I don’t believe anything that comes out of his mouth and he is about as compassionate as a nat. His main priority is work. Which mine was till my youngest was born. Am I stressing out over way too much and how do I stop worrying all the time?

Hello I’m 21 yrs old and when I was still in high school my periods were always irregular. But for 3 years now they have been regular. Until about 3 months ago when I started taking inderal for my migraines. I have been on birth control for 3 years and this is the first time in the three years that my periods have been irregular. I didn’t know if it was the inderal that made me stop having a period or what it could be?
